Doubloon Lagoon! by Nikolaj

[raw]
made by Nikolaj for LD 40 (JAM)

Yo ho ho!

Gather as many doubloons from the lagoon as you can before time runs out. The more doubloons you get, the lower you are in the water and slower you go, so plan your route carefully. Also watch out for the sandy shoals that will make you lose all you have collected!

I found the ship pretty hard to control - the acceleration was too fast and I think a top down view would be easier to control.

The ship controlls like a messup up science experiment to allow a cheetah to be controlled via atari 2600 joystick. I really liked the reflection effect on the water. Is this a custom engine?

We just hacked it out from THREE.js, if that counts.. the stock water material does all the magic, so can't claim anything from that.

However i will blame kevin for the insane boat speed.. he liked it that way. Thanks for playing!

Movement is real difficulty, just a little too fast and turns too sharply. I really like the aesthetic though
Would totally like to see this game more polished :)

That being said, all this done in JavaScript is insane, very well done I think

A truly pleasurable game. I love the BGM, its very fitting. My only gripe is that i couldn't find a way to bring up the instructions again without refreshing the page. (oh also you can sail through the big mountain behind your starting location :))..

Beautiful music, great enviroment for relaxing doubloon collection.

The sound effects had me in stitches when it crashes into the island, really funny

Downside would be the camera angle coming away from the green island - nasty, ended up with me crashing into a couple of islands

Ship was also way too fast at the start in my opinion, so much it was like having jet thrusters shoved on the back of it until you reach a sizeable amount of doubloons and it controls OK.

Nice interpretation of the theme nethertheless :yum:

Enjoyed your game! Graphics were pretty and the voice lines amazing, haha. That's one cool pirate. I found the ship a bit difficult to control. Took some getting used to. But still a wonderful game. Nice work!

I like the idea of the game, it is challenging and fun. I think controls could be improved because they are unnecessarily hard.

Overall, Nice work.. oh and the aesthetic is really good.

Beautiful game! Reminds me of a childhood favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Dav39GAfHM

Did you get a real-life pirate to do voice acting?

the music really let me feel great, and that built a very great atmosphere with the special aesthetics and ,which to make people feel real relax and really navigate a boat in a sea. this is wonderful!
small bug report: as the picture, once time when i restart, the camera flew away to top view...and far far away...(but i have to say this also looks great)
finally i must to say the effect is sooo humorous if i got too much coins, haha

The aesthetic of the game is very cute. The sound design is lovely, the VA being a particularly nice touch. However the controls and camera feel rather awkward, which might be alleviated by, say, a first-person mode or a fixed camera mode looking out from the rock. Also, there's a bug where if you restart you can keep your current velocity.

Nice sound effects. You do a good piratey voice! My favorite part of the game is being able to just give up on life and sail out to sea. ![Screen Shot 2017-12-05 at 8.02.25 AM.png](///raw/c79/e/z/d826.png)

I experienced a bug you might want to know: my camera went all around the map, so high I wasn't able to see anything and sometimes under the ground :D here is a pic:

![work4.png](///raw/e45/e/z/df08.png)

the game was unfortunately unplayable, I'm not sure what caused this to happen...

Tulipekoni - I think we had some debugging motion on the camera tied to the mousewheel, sorry about that! Thanks for playing though

I both love and hate how fast this little sailboat goes without many coins to weigh it down! Haha, but seriously this was a silly and entertaining little game. Unfortunately I wasn't skilled enough to get more than 20% of the coins. I like the voice lines though :)

If I had one critique it would be that I wish you started out a little slower and the coins affected your speed slightly less - then it would be more about avoiding the little islands. Also, maybe if the camera were attached to the boat from behind it might be easier to see whats in front of you.

The ship seems a bit hard to control, it accelerates to fast. I would opt for giving it a constant speed and allow the player to set sails levels in order to manage it.

Nice background music!

Nice game easy to play and this has to be the first ship that can sail backwards in human history!
got confused straight out of the box though because the ship is oriented in such a way that when you pres W in the beginning you just go trough the mountain and kind of lose the player model.
