Whatever Floats Your Boat by hkay

made by hkay for LD 40 (JAM)

It's finished!

(It really isn't and we just ran out of time)

We really should have planned better before we started...especially since this is our second Ludum Dare.

But anyway here it is:

LD40<em>Win</em>x86<em>2017-12-04</em>23-53-43.png

The idea is, that you are on a boat that can only carry a limited weight. If it's too heavy, it will sink. Sadly birds and other creatures try to make your ship heavier. You have to defend it as long as possible.

Controls:

  • A,D - walk
  • SPACE - jump
  • 1,2, SCROLLWHEEL - select weapon
  • RIGHT CLICK - aim (bow)
  • LEFT CLICK - use weapon

Intresting concept and very funny mood :D found a minor bug, at times the run continues even after death, causing death even before the start of a round, overall great entry!

Hilarious idea and I like the minimal pixel art! Balancing the boat is an interesting mechanic and the feel of pushing off the large weights is satisfying.

Loved the art, specially the seagulls falling on the sea. Took me a while to understand the ui, and i think it took too much for the difficult to scale. Make me loose faster <3

Wow, I really like it! Great minimalist concept. It could be a bigger challenge, bow seems overpowered. Vsync or some kind of frame limiter would be good.

Great concept, interesting take on the theme

I love the implementation of the weights and slime portals

A feature that would make this game interesting would be picking your loadout at the start: Armour + Weapons would cost weight and it would encourage players to go under healthed/geared at the sake of weight on the boat

Audio could have been more varied but other than that, great job!

Awesome idea, and well executed might I add. The graphics were nice and simple too. I did think it became a bit too easy once I figured out how to use the bow, and I think there was also a bug when trying to face a slime that is touching that would prevent you from switching directions. A really good effort though. Good job :)

Hey, nice concept and nice graphics. What has been implemented already provides fun interractions. That's the kind of game which I'd like to see growing.

Surprisingly fun for such a simple game. The idea is great and the gameplay is satisfying, I just wish there was more variety and something to give the player a feeling of progression, like a score meter.

Really liked this game. It had very nice minimalistic art, sounds fit well with the artistic style and the ambient sounds really served the mood well. It was fun to play, and i like the fact that it was an arcade style game because it means i don't have to spend 15 minutes playing to be able to review (altough the game is so good i wouldn't have a problem doing it). What i mean is that the fun is compressed and doesn't take time to get to. The only problem i had gameplay wise was a bug where my character didn't stop running which left me flying off the ship without control, but that's ok, since i could instantly respawn and try again. Also, i don't think the game follows the theme that well but extra points for doing something actually interactive with the theme. :) GJ!

Minimalistic art, but very well done! One only request: allow to kill the black birds with the bow!

This was a really awesome game, and I mean it. The art is great and the waves sounds really give you the feeling that you are on that ship, that you're the one undertaking this challenge. One problem that I noticed was that you must right click the bow to aim, but left click to fire. I have an apple mouse here and I can't use right and left click at the same time. If you made the controls click to aim and release to release that would make the game a little more fun for me, just because I can't use the bow right now. But that's really the only thing I can take away from a really solid entry.

Simple yet fun and addictive game, with a smart use of the theme. Found myself playing for quite a while, it gets pretty challenging in the end! Controls are spot on and the bow works really well, although I found the best weapon is basically thworing stuff over the board (being careful not to go behind them!). Congrats on this!

I really like this one! Simple and clean game design, and very beautifully presented. I liked that it started off as a kind of casual physics-based game and then some action-y elements were introduced. However, after some time, I found the only thing that changed was the rate at which enemies spawn, which made it somewhat more challenging (although it was always quite easy to defend using the bow), but the feeling of progress was lost pretty quickly. But for what you've accomplished in the jam, this is awesome, and I'd love to see an extended version of this!
Visuals and audio are very nicely executed, nothing I'd change in any way. Now go add some overly happy music, put it on a mobile app store and get some ad revenue from it! :P

I liked it, more when I discover the bow (didn't read the instructions first). A feedback when something hurts you would be nice, also a timer showing the actual score, you get more anxious if you see you're going to beat your previous score. Great work!

Kind of simple, but entertaining for a bit. Doesn't seem to ramp up in difficulty though? Or I didn't wait long enough (played for just over 2 minutes).

The HTML5 version seems to be basically unplayable though. Doing a left click while moving the mouse around causes a "drag" action to be initiated by the browser and this locks up the keyboard input, meaning if you were pressing left or right, that button ends up being held down, thus causing you to run off the boat. Since the bow uses the mouse to aim and left click to fire this happens accidentally quite often. I had to download the windows build to play successfully.

@ddrkirbyisq Thanks! The difficulty does ramp up, but way too slowly. Regarding the HTML5 build: I can't reproduce the problems you had... It seems to be working fine for me.
