Mars 9 by PUARSLIBURF

[raw]
made by PUARSLIBURF for LD 39 (COMPO)

A game where power is both your health and your ammo

In the late 70s the soviet union launched the Mars 9, a secret mars mission to find out what happened to the Mars 3 probe. As the humanoid robot onboard the Mars 9 (The Prop-H) activated and started looking for the Mars 3 it was immediately stolen by aliens.

Move with WASD, shoot with the arrow keys. Defeat every enemy in a level to unlock the exit

Hey, you should output Humor category because there is not much humor in your game , but i like it. I think you consume too much power when you shoot so it make the game really hard. Still a good game !

Wow, such a difficult game! I agree with Gurvan that shooting takes up too much power (or the enemies should have less hit points). I'm not sure if you have to kill all the aliens (the game displays remaining aliens, so I guess you have too?), but there are very few batteries to pick up, so you have to skip a lot of aliens and never get damaged to not run out of power!

However, I really liked the old-school style of the game. The graphics, sounds and music worked well together, and actually the game was pretty fun to play. A great little game. Well done :)

Nice work! I liked the artstyle and the music. I think they complemented each other well and contributed to the nice oldschool feel. The gameplay was easy to understand and get the hang of. However, I found that the game had a very methodical and slow pace to it. I believe this mainly due to the fact you have to be very conservative with your power usage and also because the enemies have a pretty long period invincibility frames. I believe this slows the game down unnecessarily, so perhaps you can address it in the future. Regardless, good work on your entry!

It's a great platformer/shooter, with smooth controls and a real difficulty. The retro aesthetic is really well done. But yes it's definitely too hard, kinda frustating. Still, a great game. Good job !

Nice game @PUARSLIBURF.
The Graphics were good and the audio as well.
We basically had the same idea. Youll notice, when you play my game.
I had fun, and it was challenging.

Cool game! I liked the pixelart. However I find the game to be really hard. I don't know if it's a design choice, but the enemies' invulnerability frames make them really though, making me run back (and taking hits while doing so). I think that if you tweak the difficulty a bit, it would result in a great game. Nice work!

Brilliant idea on making the health and ammo the same resource, I'd love to explore this more! Also, it fits the theme really nicely. Nice presentation, I especially liked the soundtrack and sound effects. The game is pretty hard though and the limited number of lives make it frustrating, I had to give up beating it because I didn't want to replay the same levels over and over. The way the enemies become invulnerable after a hit should've been explained somehow because I spent too much time trying to hit them in this state, not realizing why I can't destroy them. It's especially a pain point in this game where literally every bullet counts.

Cool game, but utimately it proved to hard for me.
I grew frustrated and quit.
While I like a challenge, it felt unbalanced. The shooting costs way too much, and enemies took upwards of 4 shots to dispatch.
I did like the art, it meshes well with each other. And the music had a nice tune! Sounds were good enough.
Overall, you've made a complete and good game. Congrats!

I liked the concept but quickly ran into a frustrating problem that stems from the design health = ammo:
If you got hit twice in a level the chance of you even being able to complete the stage was non existent (the ammo would not be enough to kill all the aliens)
Hence the player would spend potentially a lot of time trying to complete a stage that they couldn't complete to begin with.

The issue would be non existent if enemies were skippable however, it would just make the game harder instead of impossible.

Fun. It first it seemed really impossible until i realised when you shoot the enemies they are immune for a little while and so actually they only take 2 shots for or 3 for blue.......Once you get the hang it was actually not that hard at all. Anyway had fun, level design was nice, although by the end it was getting a bit samey. liked the NES visual style. Liked the music, it fit nicely- was that procedurally generated? Good job

I love the look, sound, and feel of this game! Very old school, which I'm a sucker for. I liked how health and ammo were both tied into the general power variable. If I had to criticize I would only say that the opening is a bit long and the lack of a variable jump (releasing before reaching full jump height lets you stop moving up) makes the platforming a little difficult. Regardless really solid entry, keep it up!

Okay, I really suck at platformers, so this game was super hard for me. The Levels are really designed for good players, I wished there was a bit of a learning curve. But I must say, if I were a good player, I think I would enjoy the levels, there are very well thought-through. The graphics are well done with a good color palet. The controls and the music are also very good.
