Night Shift by TomekS

[raw]
made by TomekS for LD 42 (COMPO)

NightShift is a simple puzzle game, you drive a forklift and have to deliver cargo to the destination. In the process you compete against time, but mostly yourself. That's right, with every new delivery you have to avoid a ghost of yourself who delivers previous package. It's getting crowded quickly and so you run out of space. There is a lot of accidents on the night shift, so be aware of dead bodies everywhere (who doesn't like fun with ragdolls). Gameplay video of first three levels: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Szz1CzwGhyw

Timelapse making of can be found in the bottom.

Game includes 5 playable levels. 5.jpg 6.jpg 3.jpg 4.jpg

Controls:

turn left - left arrow or A

turn right - right arrow or D

Tools used: Unity, VS code, 3D max 2015, Blender 2.79, Photoshop CS5, Paint, Bosca Ceoil.

Total time 33 hours.

Known issues: - sometimes when finishing level in last seconds, game over popup appears (next level will be loaded anyway, so minor) - music is terrible (it's my Achilles heal) hence I set the volume on very low

This is a great game! The style is really on point and consistent, concept is great and increases the difficulty REAL quick. Ragdoll on crashes adds a lot of character. Overall I really enjoyed this!

I laughed hard when the ragdoll flew out the window. Brilliant! :)
Also looks good, while the music was a bit annoying.

Cool game, except it got stuck in a black screen after restarting the level a few times.

@richard-pittman Thanks for this nice review, @hello1423 hope one bug doesn't affect your judgement, it is a gamejam after all.

Ragdolls are damn fun (you really deserve the humor category!), and the game is challenging and a bit hard (maybe too much after a little time)

Loved the style and the mechanics that are really theme fitting.

One of the funniest and most enjoyable entry I played at moment.

Great work, have a nice day!

@memel06 Thanks for your kind words, Regarding the difficulty the curve is projected on very small amount of levels (5) hence it seems like it increases too quickly, but I didn't want to make it too easy to play through and deprive hardcore gamers of fun.

Great work, one of the best-looking compo games I've seen. I wish Blender was in my skill-set, it's Unity primitives or 3Dpaint for me!

@madbeagle Actually I never used blender before, few weeks back I start learning it from youtube tuts to be able to make my own char for this Ludum Dare (which is the driver) It's very easy to do basic stuff maybe you should give it a try. All other models I made in 3d max.

Really nice game ! my favorite so far :)
It could be great if we can redo each step of a level ;)

Very well done !

@gaming-night Thanks for kind words, You do have redo after each step, only thing is it doesn't put back the time. It would have been too easy that way.

Wow, very nice game! It is both a puzzle and a skill game, I love it!
I wish I would have thought of this (Though I wouldn't have pulled it off as well anyhow).

Goood looking game, nice comedic news papers and enjoyable gameplay. Really solid job TomekS, slight improvement would be to increase the volume on the sound effects like crashes and impacts but it's so minor detail don't even mind. Nice job man!

Wow, what a great game. A lot of humor that's sort of self-inflicted by the player crashing into things. I also like that the gameplay is a balance between the puzzle of finding non-overlapping routes and actually managing to drive these routes. The u-turn corners always got me...

By far the best graphics of all the games I have played so far. Controls a bit hard to master which I am torn if it's a plus or a minus. Overall a really cool achievement. Respect!

Its actually pretty fun!

A very nice touch keeping the bodys from the failed attempts.

Although sometimes they would all disappear and then all spawn on my next failure/crash.. which was hilarious!
Not sure if that was ment to be there, but it kept me playing for longer :D

Really cool idea! The controls also feel quite good; uncontrollable enough to be challenging not to collide with anything, but not unreliable to the point it is painful.

I would've really appreciated a quick-level-restart button; if you screw up enough times in your first run, even if you still have 10 seconds left you already know it's not enough... and you have to slog through those 10 seconds anyway. I would've loved to see beyond level 2, but that frustration blocked me.

Also, while the music wasn't anything to write home about, the sound effects were *really* well done; the preparation, the movement and the crashing all felt great thanks to them.

It was quite fun to play, well done!

This was fun. I have seen the mechanic before in an older FPS game and it works well here. I am a terrible driver, but the logic of the way the puzzles works is good. Good style in terms of graphics, and the ragdoll effects on the drivers is funny.

I think I would like to see a mode where you can sort of scrub through time and erase your mistakes, but that's probably because I wasn't very good at it!

gameplay at around 13 minutes: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/297339046

This was enjoyable. I think it would have been fine without the time limit. Weaving between forklifts is hard enough!

@eott @heidelbert you can get used to the control after some time, the idea was to replicate rear turning wheels, probably that's one of the reasons of initial struggle (or as well bad implementation is :D) Thanks for good words.

@lukel thanks for good review. The bodies are set to disappear after one minute for performance issues. The reappearing is a bug for sure :D.

@agecaf Thanks for thorough review. I had this restart button at first but my pause menu was bug, so I got rid of it. Again in last hours of development I made few mistakes like this one, that made my game a bit worse overall than it could be :(

@tetra Thanks for the review. Your video made me realize I screwed up the balance a bit, level 2 is way harder than it should be ... You did well non the less got to lvl 4 there was just one more left to complete the game with 9 deliveries.

@matt-tuttle Thanks for the review, at first I was thinking about it, but It felt too easy. On the other hand I might have just set the time limits badly :D. The goal of level if to drive accurately with each forklift, getting read of the time is kind of like giving you infinite amount of lives.

Absolutely amazing :D Only if you had more levels/things to play. Really good and nice graphics, that truck thing had a very nice model, audio was good, and it was just good all around. Only sad thing is that it was so short. But a very good game overall!! Good job !

@nnnikki Can you elaborate on this? Maybe it was blocked by your Antyvirus? Tried it on 3 different computers and didn't have problem.

@bartosz the plan was to include both easy and hard level, and since I only have 5 levels the difficulty curve is quite steep ...

@raccoon-js I second that, for the next LD I promise to work on my music making skills :)

Very inviting game for this jam, You had bits of attention to detail, including tilting when you move as well as remarks on the ground. Had a laugh of the workers flying out of there cabins. I found this game difficult, but by design. This game felt the right amount of difficulty for the short time you had to balance it. The only bad thing I can say but is easily fixed is a restart button.

Super awesome entry you have here! I love the concept and I think the execution was spot on. I can totally see this being an addictive time waster on the mobile marketplace. I'd recommend maybe removing the timer and focusing on making the puzzles engaging (since that's where this game really shines)? Good job and I hope you continue to develop this project!

Really cool entry! Models are nice and I absolutely loved how you made main menu with blurred warehouse in the background with passing forklifts, it looks really cool! The gameplay is fun. I only wish that you somehow show all start and end points at the beginning of the level, so the level could be played more strategically from the beginning.

Fun fact: dead bodies are not cleared when you restart, so this happened when I got afk for a couple of minutes:

Great game! I enjoyed it a lot. The forklifts turned really nice (I loved how you could turn really fast right when you start) and the maps were simple but fun. I also really liked the freedom you had, I've played a lot of games where you get to control multiple vehicles right after each other and I have to say that this was the one where I had the most freedom regarding both pathfinding and controlling the vehicles. The only "complaint" I have is that the game was a bit grey, a bit of colour would help in my opinion. Regardless, great job! Loved it!

@dj-depressive I actually desaturated colors a lot in post. My goal was to achieve grim-factory-night-shiftish atmosphere. Thanks for the review.
