Personal Space by Hannah19

[raw]
made by Hannah19 for LD 42 (JAM)

You just got home from a long day at work, and all you want is to be by yourself...but your friends have other ideas. Use WASD or the arrow keys and select one of your four available moves to stay away from all the other partygoers who keep pouring in your door and keep your stress level from rising. If you keep your cool until midnight, the party will end and you can collapse on the couch with all that leftover cake!

(mistakes made? yes. learning experience? yes. regrets? yes, but doing the jam isn't one of them.)

As an introvert myself, I'm surprised I didn't think of this take on the theme. Great idea.

Interesting idea! I couldn't quite figure out how the controls worked, but the art and concept is pretty cool. :)

Gameplay is reasonably confusing. Wasn't entirely sure how the movement worked; eventually figured out that the keys give the tromino like shapes, but it wasn't clear where you could or couldn't go.
Interesting take on the theme though.

Not clear on the controls, the game concept is interesting. Good work!

Interesting idea even if a bit confusing. The controls are a bit clunky and it's pretty hard to guess where you'll end up with the whole collisions extravaganza :D.
But still, that's a really nice take on the theme !

Congratulations on the entry !

I knew it, i knew that i am not the most original dude on this Ludum Dare and some else will use this implementation of theme. Overall, the game its good, but i think you should make it much smouther, right know it feels a little bit cluncky. Overall, nive work.

Controls were very clunky and it wasn't clear what I had to do as it wasn't clear where you could move or not, the sound levels were also quite painful!

very much on theme and an interesting concept though!

Nice idea. It was a bit confusing when I played it for the first couple of times. Also, the movement is very clunky. It would have been easier to understand if the controls were smoother.

Overall, it's a good game. Really nice take on the theme.

Awesome game, it seems I was one of the few who understood the controls right away but I understand why it might not be clear. If you run into an object your screen shakes a bit and it is hard to follow what is exactly happening.

I love the concept though and the sound effects were on point. Felt almost like a real party :)

Keep it up!

Interesting idea! I wasn't able to reach midnight; the controls frustrated me a lot. I would be interested to see an implementation of the same idea with different controls.

Interresting concept.
Sometimes the player collision seems strange.

Nice work.

movement feels a bit weird but it's interesting at the same time. i totally know the feeling of being stuck between all those people and just wishing to go home, haha. thanks for your game!

It took me a while to figure out the movement was locked to a specific spacing direction indicated by the bottom-left hand corner HUD. Since my focus is towards the player, I didn't notice this indicator until later. Perhaps consider moving that HUD below the player character, so that it's in the same place my focus is on?

In regards to the gameplay, it's certainly stressful to realize how limited your movement are, and how it seems many NPCs moves towards your direction. It's funny how after some experimentation, my winning move was to sulk into the kitchen and hug the top-left corner. So, I assume I perfectly got the intended experience in the game? I like the concept, it certainly forces the player to reconsider the conditions the playable character is in.

I was a bit bummed out that I couldn't walk out the door, but heh, I guess that's the price of a surprise party.

Took me a minute to understand the movement, but once I did this became a fun little puzzle game. It may be too hard, as I wasn't able to even come close to beating it. Super original idea though.

The controls are a little confusing. it would be better to give much freer control of the character. Interesting concept, definitely unique. With some polish this could be a very good game!

got confused when the game over screen appeared after a few seconds of playing. the controls are kinda weird but this fits the theme very well. i really tried to survive but i always get the you lost screen. any tips? overall, a good and interesting game for this LD.

This idea is great. This is a very relatable experience! Wished there was more ways to get away from the guests instead of just running away from them. Maybe an option like "Insult guest" or "Excuse yourself" or something that works like abilities. These could be like the move controls and switch randomly.

Speaking of the controls... I disliked the controls in this quite a bit. My first issue was the UI symbols .... the black square should show where you're landing not where you start. But after a while of moving around and bumping into everything I still found it impossible to get away from people for more than a turn or two. I think can still use some work.

Overall fun concept.
