A World In Her Eye by OrbitalBlueprint

Qora has lived as a wheat farmer on her own small planet for as long as she can remember. Her only light sources being a few lamps and a small star of sorts tied to her own planet and spending her days staring at the sky, her life is rather monotonous.
But occasionally other planets pass by her own. What will she find this time?
A short point and click-style game without pointing and clicking.
[UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT] -> Move around
[X] -> Interact/speed up dialogue [hold]
WARNING: The game might run slow on some machines. The game is best experienced at ~60 FPS. I'm sorry if it doesn't run well on yours, I might get around to adding graphic optimization features!

Everything is exactly the same, but the issues with the water movement were fixed. Hopefully Orb will be able to update the main post later today, as he asked me to fix the executable while he was busy. Have a good one, everybody, and very nice work Orb!
A couple issues:
* If you interact with Exupery after using the biofuel the same dialogue/animation will replay
* If you talk to Exupery a third time after putting in the battery, the game will crash with this message:
```
@HugoBDesigner <3
@Veralos Thanks for the constructive criticism! I blame Qora's rather weird running animation on the time constraint, hah. Fixed both glitches.
@FyreDemon405 ... I saw this comment before uploading v1.1, but forgot to fix that. Oh well, until v1.2 that's just something people can use to their advantage :P
@nicolas-shapland Thanks!
@davikin92 I didn't really put that much thought into the theme of the story/gameplay, but I really like that interpretation of it.
@tomer-cool Thanks, coffee helped :P
Good work :D
@giardi Thank you!
@matt-fabius I just uploaded a mac compatible version. Well, it *should* work on mac, I'm not entirely sure if I distributed the game correctly, hah.
@clive Thanks! I have ideas on how to proceed with this game and personally I'm excited to execute them.
@oxlander Like I said to the other Matt, I just uploaded a version which *should* work on mac. At least the soundtrack's enough to get people hooked as it seems :grin:
Very nice art style, and the multiple endings are cool. I feel like the planets might have crossed a bit too quickly though. Even going as fast as I could, I was barely able to fix the robot in time.
Regardless, nice work on the project! :)
If you're interested in trying another space/planet-themed game, check out my entry, rovR: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/rovr
Cheers!
Great Atmosphere with the style of game. I think maybe fixing the sound to be a little less jarring?
I think my playthru was bugged, I wasn't able to progress. Maybe some more exposition telling me what to do?
Great job with the art style.
Good job! Mac version worked on 10.10.5 Yosemite for me!
@heathor Thanks!
@morrilet I blame the lack of side walking animations on the time limit (and totally not laziness shhhh)
@jdmazz I updated the game to the player more time before the planet passes overhead because of how demanded it is, haha :grin:
@vkmicro I'm surprised, I still feel like there's too *little* to interact with, but it's good enough for a Ludum Dare game I suppose :smile: Thanks!
@spaceman Thank you! Like I said to jdmazz, I updated it to give the player more time.
@akirassasin Yeah, that seems to be the biggest flaw people are pointing out. I'm thinking about having difficulty modes, like a mode where the planet's passing is timed and depends on the player's progress through the game and one where the planet's passing is in real-time.
Music of solitude and void and the grand of universe
PS
You could emphasize the time limit more in the dialogues.
Great job!
Check our own version of a space game! :)
I feel like you should communicate the goal better.
I also love the way the game is so open-ended, the way the end-game screen just lingers there if you choose to not restart is just marvelous, the story doesn't have a feeling of finished, every time the game ends I can't help but imagine what Qora is going to do next and remember that she doesn't quite have anything else to do, there is a sense of bittersweetness to it all.
Overall to me 5/5. Good Job!
Some of the pixel art is really well done but I feel overall the game could use a bit more visual consistency, the light circles for example would look a lot better if they matched the rest.
Also it's very cool to have this time-based story that actually has multiple endings. :thumbsup:
Out of a bit orneriness, I first overslept, then went back to sleep, effectively skipping the whole game. I really enjoyed that as first experience, it cememted how important the player's actions are in your story. The multiple endings were cool (although I got stranded on the robot's planet once without cutting to an end scene), and the art was fitting, although the animations could have used more love.
The music was the star of this game, though. Well done on evoking just the right mood, and keeping that through the different areas.
I do wish I was able to explore the tiny lasso'ed moon, though. So evocative :grin:
@skywilly Thank you! I have ideas on what to do with the game from this point on, so this should be exciting.
@toccio94 It's a pretty exploration-oriented game. There's not much to distract you, so the objectives should be rather clear (at least I hope, I know the solution by heart because of how many damn times I had to play the thing before release, haha).
@hjalte The walk animation is a common complaint, I'll definitely remake it for any future plans I have with this project.
@ethereal-psyche-games Thank you! Yeah, the "moon" being tied to Qora's own planet is a pretty cute detail and fits in with the rather fairytale-ish theme behind the game in my opinion.
@fufi The music inside Qora's house was composed prior to the jam for a project I abandoned, but everything other than that was made for the jam. Thanks!
@hadik Thanks!
@tombishopspg Aww. Don't worry, I bet Qora appreciates the efforts anyways.
@tyranosaw Undertale definitely served as a great inspiration for this. Heck, it's what got me into composing music in the first place.
@mutfak-studios The framework I used is Löve2D. If you mean libraries in the traditional sense, I didn't use any. All was coded from scratch using knowledge from previous projects.
@dennyrocketdev This seems to be a common complaint, I'll see what I can do to improve on this aspect in the future.
@antaresvaldemar D'oh, I knew there was a broken hitbox somewhere in the game, but I forgot to fix it. Next update, here I come.
@mox That's fantastic to know, thanks, haha.
@lugdumdare-team That's actually pretty much the inspiration for the world! Even the robot's name is a play on the story (the author's name is Antione de Saint-Exupéry).
@s-ol I'll rework some graphics in a post-LD version because yeah, a lot of its pretty inconsistent. Heck, the exterior of Qora's hut uses premade patterns in Gimp!
@danman9914 Included that on the itch.io page, woops.
@endlessplumber Qora's just that kinda person. In fact the game's name was initially going to be "Universe's Sweetheart" before I settled on the current, hopefully catchier title. It's strange that the end scene didn't happen after getting stranded. Might have something to do with the ladder's rather weird hitbox, but the stranded ending should be triggered by interacting with where the ladder touched the ground. Yeah, the animations are rather stiff. And thanks! I started messing around with composing only a few months ago, I appreciate that people like it this much, haha.
Also, have [this song](https://soundcloud.com/orbitalbp/calmwaters-unused-awihe-song) I was going to use for the other planet before I changed it to be a desolate rock with a single cave.
I'd played the pre-deadline version and it ran at a consistant 59fps. I found that a bit funny since your description said it was best experienced at 60fps.
I do like the music of this and am glad you provided a download.
I also enjoyed the story when I got the full version with the Calm mode.
Would love it if you gave our game a try :)
https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/explorer-extraordinaire
@wheerd v1.4 on the page has an optional "Calm" mode which removes the time stress, and that's actually something I should fix, so thanks for bringing that up.
@makenai This means a lot to me!
@pschichtel I unfortunately don't have a Linux machine I can use to test distribution. I added a download for the source code contained in a .love file, to run it you'll need to install [Löve2D](https://love2d.org/) (the framework I made it with) on your Linux machine.
@firstdream The player's animation is kinda weird in general, lol, but thanks!
@cooby A lot of people seem to compare it to King's Quest, so yeah, definitely fits into that genre. Thank you!
@randomhuman v1.4 has "Calm" mode which removes the planet's real-time passing. It passes in real-time because that's how it works in the story - other planets don't pass by Qora's own that often, and when they do she only has little time to explore them before returning to her monotone life. Of course, if she spends too long on them, she gets stranded.
Great game!
The walk animation just works, its simple and only 2 directions, but it ties into the games, in lack of a better word humor and just enhances the gameplay. I absolutely love the ladder "scene", it could very easily have been annoying to have to climb it up and down, but it was implemented in a way that just made the world more immersive.
The 3 best things with this game is that it is: #1 brave, doing things differently. #2 Has great cohersive graphics and #3 has incredible audio.
Really well done, one of my absolute favourite entries that I have come across over the 8 Ludum Dare events that I have participated in.
@dayvidmoreira7 Aww, good thing it shows
@yirggzmb Thank you!
@bendev-games Yeah, I can see it being a little confusing, but thanks!
@jeremy-ryan Interesting, you're at least the second person to see the stranded ending as the happiest one. Not that there's an "official happiest ending", it's up to interpretation I guess and I'm loving seeing everyone's interpretations of the game. I intend on improving the graphics for a more polished release on the game, but thanks!
@imdigitaljim I'd love to continue working on the game to further explore its world, comments like that definitely help, haha. Thanks!
@namrog84 I personally am excited to expand on it. Thanks!
@pedro-henrique-cesar Hopefully the updates I keep pushing out make it easier to get, haha.
@jasperarmstrong Knew that something would go wrong with the mac release, but oh well. At least that workaround's good enough.
@simon-rahnasto Wow, in-depth indeed! I can't express my gratitude about how highly it's regarded - it seriously means a lot to me! And it's nice to know that the ladder scene works. I was scared people would find it annoying and tedious, but at least the general atmosphere seems to make people look aside from that for the most part, haha.
@chunkybrewster Thank you!
@brainy-beard Strange - did you press X?
@snowdrama Seems to be because of a bug in v1.5 (if that's the version you played instead of the pre-deadline one). Fixed in v1.6.
I didn't regret that.. what a lovely game! The art and musics are just fantastic and fit perfectly together, the mood and story, though really short, are quite nostalgic. This setting with the ladder between planets is absolutely gorgeous and got this The Little Prince vibe that I find charming.
To conclude it's just a great and unique entry. The amount of work is impressing (especially the sound design with multiple tracks), and it doesn't feel like a game from a jam at all (except from the crash of course :°).
Well done!
P.S. the mac version works for me without any problems.
Sorry if I was a little critical with my initial comment - it's sort of hard to gauge your expectations without playing a few games. This is definitely among the best in terms of mood and music, and the visuals are up there too (especially now you've fixed that water bug). I bumped up some of my ratings because I feel the game deserves it.
I thought this game was really fun, even if I didn't understand the objective too well (I played the 48-hour version). I liked the graphics and the music as well.
Good job!
