Disaster On Nebula One by RAC-Games

[raw]
made by RAC-Games for LD 39 (JAM)

After an astroid wrecks your spaceship you have to get to your escape pod to evade the gravitational pull of a nearby planet. But the energy reserves are down ! Collect the power packs to start up the escape pod and prevent your impending doom. Beware: Jumping and using your Jetpack needs energy too, so do not run out of power.

You can download our game here: https://rac-games.itch.io/dono

It was alot of fun and we see a great improvement compared to our first entry. We would greatly appreciate your feedback :-) Made from scratch, all models self-made, all music and sounds self-made, used professional mocap data for rigged models.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS BY THE DEVELOPERS:

This game is hard by gamejam standards. We were aiming for a Megaman-like difficulty level. Due to lack of playtesting we overshot a little bit.

CONTROLS:

You can use WASD or arrow key to run. Jump with SPACE. Jetpack hover with Mousebutton or CTRL. Using Jetpack and then Jump results in a boostet jump. You can also use a gamepad.

HOW IT WENT:

So our team of 5 took off to design a “jump and run”-game. Because last time we did a tower defence which lacked story to 100%, we aimed to make our game more complete. So we planed a small story, an intro and outro scene, a tutorial stage, a player hub and several levels. We achieved most of it except for additional levels so we are quite happy with the result. All of us being hobbyists level design and balancing took to long. Costing almost all sleep in the progress (most of us slept less than 10 hours in these 3 days). 8 Minutes before end of the competition we finished postprocessing and uploaded the whole thing. But more on that in our postmortem post. We would love anyone to try our game and comment what they thought of it.

You're game was pretty cool, i didn't play all but it was incredible what you did in only 3 days. I love the graphism and the color you chose.
Maybe a bad point is the camera when you want te go back. It move too much.

You did an excellent work !! Well played :D

Your game is AWESOME.
Great graphics and Audio. It looks very polished and it was really fun to play (i'm a bad platformer, your game was a challange for me)
If there's anything I could say to improve your game is that the energy bar sprite is a little stretched and a checkpoint would be awesome =)!

But awesome game and awesome job

Nice graphics and audio. Agree with @baben - a bit of work need to be done with camera when you move backwards.
For some reason, after pressing "R" game starts from very beginning. Intended?

Nice work overall :)

This was for development purpose because we did not want to watch the cutscnese 500 times. We forgot to take it out.

** First Impression **: Nice a space shooter, a few seconds later wow that is something quite different :D

** Graphics/Sound **: I have to say i am really really impressed on what you managed to achieve in that timeframe :) so far in terms of graphics and sound one of the top games i have seen :)

** Gameplay **: I really like that you teached me how to play by forcing me to play instead of reading text here :D, also you managed to include a variety of gameplay elements with different boosts :) great job here, what initially confused me tho a bit was that i thought i had to go back to the power tank? because of the uploading and downloading power? when i went back the door was closed tho, might have been just a misunderstanding on my part initially^^

** Overall **: You can be really proud of yourself, you really impressed me with how much you got done really shows that a team can get quite something done in 3 days if they work well together :)

@Loktor:
You have to finish the level to bring back the powerpacks. We take about 2 runs @ 3 min to win the game. Since we had almost no external gameplay testing we give you 10 minutes which is 3 mediocore runs. So besides dying in the level, you also can day by crashing into the planet. It has a a different ending sequence btw.

@TheFlyingKeyboard: Thank you for your feedback. How did you manage to shoot? We didn't implement a shooting mechanic :)

Graphics are very VERY cool, and the sound design and music are great, however, two "big" problems for me :
>- the movement done by the camera when the player change direction is very disturbing
>- some level have some frustrating portion, due to the design.

Controls very nicelly, the only thing that bothered me is that I finished with max energy and still had to redo the stage to get the rest, but the overall feel of the game is amazing, great job man.

First thing- sound! I really like that you included a slider, but it wasn't quite tuned right. You might have thought like I did the first time I messed with it: -80 to 20 decibels? That's so weird! Let me give you a little insight. Television usually shoots for -20 decibels. This is so the volume can be easily controller and it doesn't rattle components. It's also the most comfortable. Thus, the top of the slide, 100% volume, should be -20 decibels. Now, -80 is okay, but I usually up the bottom end to -60, just so the slider feels more logical. There's usually not sounds loud enough to be audible when put through -60 decibels anyways, so the extra 20 units on the slider just make the bottom third of it feel silent and untuned. Next!

The text scrolling on the intro is awesome, but it's soooooo slowwwww. I really appreciate that you gave us the ability to skip it, but i definitely don't want to miss out on the story my first time around! It could probably be about twice as fast and still give the desired effect.

Was that meteor shaking to indicate speed? Awesome detail!

The forward focus effect on the camera is really nice, as long as I'm only going one direction. When I get in to fine-control platforming, it turns in to a literal headache.

I got like 95% of the way powered and ran out of time -- probably would have made it did I not have interruptions while playing. The controls are relatively solid. The "R to restart" on the gameover screen doesn't work. Jetpack is a little confusing. Level design is good too. I think you did a solid job despite the odd quirks. Thanks for letting me play!

Very nice game indeed. I like the graphics, level design, level progression (and the built in tutorial billboards). I thought the controls were nice and responsive but when turning around the camera quickly offset which causes problem for me for two reasons, first of all i get a bit disoriented but more importantly I get motion sick unfortunately. If pressing left/right just to turn the character would have benefited if the camera didn't do the quick pan for me (but that's a minor thing in the scheme of things =) Cool that you added and intro as well and I liked the jump animation and the platform. The audio was also good! For your skybox in the intro, you may want to change from "wrap" to "clamp" for the textures to remove the lines along the box edges. Congratulations on making this game - it's a solid platformer :)

It plays great! The level design gradually gets tougher. The music choice was great. That intro cutscene was delicious. My only gripe was the camera always wanting to be in front of where you're heading which would throw off my jumping.

This was a pretty interesting idea, and I really liked it. Having to transport energy that you use yourself to the escape pod was really brilliant. The skybox at the beginning was pretty jarring, btw.

All the game is pretty awesome. Beautiful graphics. Just the camera movement disrupts the game a bit, need to be slower and smooth.

Great job! And thanks for playing our game too!

Can't believe you made this in 72 hours :) Looks awesome and it has intro and tutorial level and everything! Only downside was that it runs *reallllly* bad on my pc for some reason. Nobody else seems to have commented on that so the problem must be on my end.

Anyway, solid 2d platforming!

Awesome game. Graphics and sound are cool. You need to be conscious and use your jumping and jet-pack wisely. Sometimes runs slow but, is a great game.

Really great art and design! The cutscene was a really nice addition!

The camera was a little bit of a mess though, which is a shame because it kind of ruins the game a little! You seem to have fixed the camera to the player so that when you turn the camera flips sides and when you jump the camera sticks with the player. In most 2d platformers you'll want to have a dead zone that the player can move around in without the camera moving and then when the player reaches the border of the dead zone the camera will start following the player or will filp sides. Adding a script to the camera that follows the player this way will greatly improve player experience! Also, the lights in front of the storage room door might be a little intense, I didn't see the button prompt till my third time going through!

Other than that, really cool game! Love the spacey guy's animations and the floaty jump was fun as well!

I liked the idea, and the style of the game. I had a really hard time playing it because of key-binding. Pressing Ctrl+Space felt really awkward. I tried it with the 360 controller and it sort of worked there but the jumping was on 'Y' and the boost on 'A' which kind of makes no sense either except making the player's cerebellum and fingers hurt. So I would have wanted to enjoy running and jumping around, but now it was mostly a struggle and then impossible as the game ramped up its difficulty. The way the camera flipped that quickly back and forth made me kind of dizzy at times too. It should probably have a delay before it transitions to the new direction to ensure it doesn't flip back and forth like crazy because the player just wants to quickly look left-right-left. So in total, I think it has the potential of being a neat game, and should you decide on a post-jam version. Do something about the keys and the camera ;)

There are many things I love in this game. The colors, the animations, hovering, the background (very good!), the little challenges in level design to reach certain areas.

There is one thing I don't get: the objective. Maybe this is the answer to your question "Didn't anyone finish the game?".

There is one thing I absolutely hate and actually prevents me from playing further: the camera.

Overall, it is a great effort that give birth to a very nice game. Removing the camera problem, there is actually very little to complain, imo. Congrats a lot!

Really cool game, nice graphics and audio, but the controls and the camera make it really hard. The camera movement should be much smoother, when you change your direction the camera seems to be hurt by an asteroid x)

Decent use of lighting. The overall visuals were pretty nice but could have been a little less repetitive. Platforming was frustrating for the most part, finicky controls and glitchy platform collisions are pretty painful when every jump is costing you health. This game really would have benefited from a bit more time spent on improving platforming controls and making the levels flow a bit more nicely.

Wow! The game looks and sounds gorgeous, it's very obvious that every waking second of five people's time went into making this, very polished in every aspect! My only gripe with this game is the layout of the controls on the keyboard (that's how I played it) because space and ctrl are not that really intuitive to repeatedly press at the same time. I'd have preferred W to jump and hitting space for the jet pack. But apart from that, you've really made a great 2.5 platformer. Excellent job!
