Story:

"The year is 40XX and Cyborg squirrels have taken over the world. Now one stereotypical badass 80’s video game guy will defeat them the only way he knows how… with punches! Filled with unbeatable spirit, their advanced squirrel tech can't stop him, only slow him down. He is determined to punch as many squirrels as he can before he is overwhelmed by pure squirrel might, with their nasty, big, pointy, teeth!"

Instructions:

Run through waves of squirrels and take down as many as you can. As time goes on, the alarm number goes up, the game gets faster and harder. Getting hit and defeating squirrels will also make the alarm rise. When it reaches a certain number(either 1000, 2000, or 4000 by run selection), the game will end and you can see your score. One run should most likely last from 5-15 minutes, depending largely on run selection and ability.

Controls:

-Click on the screen to punch that location. Use arrow keys(or WASD) to move around.

-Rapidly punch blue spots when they appear to do damage to the squirrel.

-When yellow bullets appear, punch them to block them or you will get hit by them.

-Use arrow keys(or WASD) to move around. Use this to avoid the directions that flash red or get hit. (staying in the center and not moving will also result in being hit)

Tips:

-You can punch/click the yellow bullets away at any point after they are shot, even when they are really small.

-The red attack pulses exactly 5 times before inflicting a hit. Move to the non-blinking side by then.

-When moving, HOLD the directional button to remain at that side. Red attacks are NOT dodged by just tapping the button. Tapping a directional button does nothing, you will simply remain at the center.

-If the click location is off, try scrolling to the top of the page or enabling full screen mode.

-The difficult curb on all runs is the same, the game just ends at earlier. Runs with higher numbers take longer and are more difficult by the end. Nearing 4000, the game becomes very difficult to borderline impossible.

Background:

Another Compo down. I must say, I did not care for the theme this Dare. "The more you have, the worse it is" kind of describes most games when you think about it (while you gain levels and such, the game becomes more difficult overall). I was just going to nix the theme this time around but I ended up incorporating some into this game anyways. To stray away from my tenancy of making slow-paced games, I decided to make a boxing style game. I wanted to make one similar to punch out but I changed that idea for the sake of time. This game has all the core mechanics but no time to make custom boss fights or anything. It sort of plays like a mix between a boxing game and a bullet hell, using the mouse to deflect bullets while dodging around with keys. There are three different types of squirrels, though they all use variations of the same core attack pattern. I'd like build on these mechanics and make custom bosses, like in punch-out, whether or not I keep the squirrel theme. I think there is potential in it.

How I made this game:

I made this game using just HTML and Javascript in Atom, no game-making software just many lines of code. The graphics were done in Photoshop, SFX in sfxr, and the music was assembled using sample loops in FL Studios.

Known issues:

-There might be a problem when the screen is scrolled that upsets the offset, causing the click location to be off. (This could not be resolved by standard means by the deadline) This does not seem to affect embedded or full screen modes though. (I'm not sure if this counts as a "game breaking glitch" that I am allowed to work on at this point in the compo)

-While paused, the action stops, but the alarm number and time will still go up. This is not actually a "glitch" but intended as a feature when I was planing on adding upgrades and such. Just to deter people from pausing too long on a run or by using the pause to plan their actions. Screenshot2.png

Honestly, I had no idea what I was doing... but, still had fun doing it. I think the rad 80s music and silly looking graphics had a lot to do with it.

I had a difficult time figuring out what, if anything I could do to get past the cyber squirrel. From what I gather, when the squirrel goes blue, I can punch him a bunch. If he's not blue, I'm not sure what I can do. I then have yellow orbs being shot at me, but, I'm not quite sure how to deal with them. For a while, I tried clicking my mouse on them, but, that didn't seem to do much :/

The music is the best part about this game. The gameplay lacks depth, but it's still fun nonetheless. Also, I don't think yellow bullets should come from the bottom part of the screen, because they can sometimes be hard to see. I also couldn't tell how you implemented the theme into this game.

Pretty awesome music, indeed. I'm also not sure how to actually deal with the bullets shot at me...

Overall I really liked it. I definitely didn't have the patience to read all that text at the start. The music is fantastic!

Good thing somebody is ending the squirrels before they end us :)

Thanks for the tip on disabling arrow scroll! Next time.... Anyway, nice entry. I like the music and art. Pretty fun to play. I didn't really understand what was causing me to take damage though. I just saw the screen flash red. I thought I was clicking the yellow bullets away.

@tvance Yeah, thanks for playing. It's that you both block the yellow bullets by clicking on them AND also dodge the red flashes by using the arrow keys (or WASD) to move to the non-blinking side. So a red screen flash would mean you got hit with a red attack. I understand if you missed that though. One piece of feedback I'm getting is that some players are confused by the mechanics of my game. (My games tend to be confusing, I'm trying to work on that -_- ) I would adjust the game to make it easier to understand, but it is against compo rules to do so at this point. The most I can do is just clean up the instructions till post-comp.

I liked the weird futuristic squirrel concept and the 80s style. I was also a bit confused by how to avoid taking damage and only managed to get one KO. You definitely get points for weirdness :).

Interesting idea and could be really cool with some extra polish. I really liked the music, very catchy and fit the theme you were going for.
I got 2 KOs and a run time of 02:31 before my RSI gave up on me.

Great music, the concept is interesting! A bit strange with those colored circle, but overall a fun game. I guess the graphics could have been better, but it is a nice game anyway. I would have loved to see more enemies than the normal, cyber and square one, but it's a 48h game so I can't ask for too much.

Congrats!

Simple but a good concept. Definitely liked the music. It would be nice if there was a more effective visual warning to dodge instead of glowing orbs but good job.

I love the music, and find the game concept interesting. However, I would have liked more animation--squirrels moving and attacking you more, for example.

But overall, nice job!

A nice prototype. The mechanism has a lot potential. Currently the control is a bit uncomfortable and there seem to be not sufficient visual feedback for player's input. At the beginning I got lost about what is going on on the screen.

The mood is great though, largely due to the (a bit rough but quite stylish) graphics and the great music. Cyborg squirrel is a very interesting concept :)

It is also impressive that you made it just with javascript and text editors.

Cool funny game :) I loved the music a lot, and I was quite hyped by the background story and the weird monochromatic design of your game. The game itself seems simple but there is still some points that I'm not sure to understand after some games : arrows can be used to avoid attacks, but it rather seem to be moving the evil squirrel, i wasn't sure of the result of it at all :p The squarred squirrel seems overpowered can hurt me badly without creating any projectiles :/ overall good work and congratulations making this from scratch with JS, it's quite hard as I can't even beat in easy mode. On cheap trick to make the game a little bit more homogenous could be to remove these cheap colored circles and make some sprite using the same color as the rest of the gameto represent targets. Good job :) cheers!

3 KOs and 2:27. Do the squirrels cycle back every 3rd KO?

Also, the health of the 2nd and 3rd squirrel didn't appear on the top screen.

Other than that, great compo entry!
