Guan's Island by Chris Coe

[raw]
made by Chris Coe for LD 41 (JAM)

Synopsis

Guan the Iguana has shipwrecked on an island. Now he must explore, gain strength, and find a way to escape.

This was created for Ludum Dare Jam #41, and while it's playable from start to finish, it's missing some desired features such as enemies. I also had to take shortcuts on a few of the levels.

I got a fatal error after entering the forest, gathering the "lights up" orb and going back to the temple. The fatal error showed up as soon as I entered the temple scene.

I am playing on a Windows 64 bit, Windows 10, with only keyboard and mouse.

Also, I could not find what to do since I could not jump over most of the "tall jump" parts of the game.

I really liked the art of the game and the abundance of levels and scenes. And the over world was quite nice. Also, I think having many different power ups is a really nice touch. It motivated me to try to explorer and find out what was on this world. Unfortunately I hit the bug above, which made me unable to play test further.

Congrats on your game! I think it has a really nice foundation for something really engaging and instigating. :)

There was a bug that crashed the game whenever I went into an area after collecting the orb that said "Light up the darkness", and I couldn't find anything else to do because of it.

However, I really like the concept of a platformer RPG. Maybe even a metroidvania with the upgrades? The graphics were fitting and great looking, and I loved that there was a lot of variety in the music. Well done!

Thank you @Diego-Escalante and @Albuquerque . I guess I introduced a last minute bug by mistake when I re-uploaded right before the deadline. I had gone in to change a single tile, but I guess I also apparently scrapped an unused item to make things cleaner. Welp, apparently it was still being referenced in a piece of code somewhere. Sorry!

@chris-coe Dont be sorry! We are all game makers and we know this kind of thing happens! In fact, I think you can hotfix the bug and reupload your entry and still count for the jam! Just make sure to point that out in the description of the game.

Be proud of what you did! You did a great job.

Zelda II: The adventure of Lizardman!

Seriously though, 5/5.

Super impressive game! I liked the platformer/metroidvania/rpg deal. The only problem I had with it was my jump sometimes not registering while I was running. It made it a bit difficult and frustrating, but I still finished it. Great game!

Congratulations!! I enjoyed a lot until the end (big jumps rules!!). It brought me back some good memories from LoZ2. Nevertheless, it's more a Metroid than a Zelda2 :id:

Graphics are very cute and I loved the NES style music. Good work!!

I originally played your game when there was the fatal error and hoped to get to play a working version cause I loved the Zelda vibes and structure of your game. Now I've tried your patched version and awesome game, man! I love that puzzle-y backtracking style. Seeing those power cells out of reach is such a good drive to up your abilities so you can obtain them. Fun game!

Ahhh I really enjoyed this. The overworld map is so reminiscent of games like chrono trigger and final fantasy. The music and art style fits the game perfectly! I had to play all the way to the end! ~~|>

The platforming controls could perhaps use some tweaks, like faster falling down, to give more weight to the player, and snappier jumps, but there's some charm in these mechanics, as it is. As you mentioned, enemies would have been a nice addition, but lack of enemies didn't make the game any less fun, so don't worry about it :)

@hatchet I definitely agree about the jumping mechanics. But since this was literally my first time making something in GameMaker, and I was learning as I went, and I had a very strict deadline, fancy Mario-esque jumps did not end up on my to-do list! haha :)

Very much a Zelda 2 clone, but I am a huge fan of Zelda 2's format. Your graphics and level design/item positions are great, I had to keep trying to remember where everything was, but I was very much motivated to do it. Some little things: allow the player to short hop, have the character start at the mountain because I assume they crashed the spaceship there. One of the few games I played to the end!

TLDR: Great graphics level design and length of game, little bit of a lack of gameplay. Great job!

Very cool looking game and the music is great. I hope you spend some time completing it. Adding enemies and what not, Thats a big map to fill in just 48 hours!! Check out ours when you get the chance https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/infinite-typer

Great adventure game that shows lots of potential, with some enemy here and there and more levels this will be a jewel

The game feels like it's missing a few things, but it's still really fun. Plus, you pretty much nailed it stylistically. Guan's Island looks and feels like something I could've played on NES back when I was just a wee lad:)

Neat game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 41 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHFQFxHlU6Y

This reminds me a lot of Zelda 2, which I am currently playing through with my kids, so I felt right at home. I also love Metroidvanias. Sometimes they are hard to get into and all the backtracking can get annoying, but I think that the smaller levels with the combination of the overworld map makes this one very approachable.

I liked the visuals and how the sound went well with the overall feel of the game. Nicely done!

I love it! WASD option for movement would have been appreciated though.
Pure black backgrounds in some maps feel kind of lacking.

Did you know that you could get offscreen above the ceiling of the temple entrance with a fully upgraded jump?

This game had a great mood and feel to it. I wish the places I was supposed to go were more visually distinct on the map and that there was more obvious direction. I think I went to every other location before the forest. Also, the space ship ending felt out of place for starting on a broken wooden ship and it seeming like a fantasy world on the island. It reminded me a lot of Zelda 2. Great job!

@Unentokku I agree about the backgrounds. Looking back, the maps with even a slightly speckled background feel way better than pure black. WASD is a good idea. I wonder if there's a better key than Space for jump to work with WASD. And I can't believe I never found that place where you can get on the temple roof. That would make an awesome place for a secret item or easter egg!

@erebus Definitely agree. Part of the issue was diving into this with literally no plan and making it up as I went, haha. But hey, INCOMPATIBLE GENRES! :D I was originally going to have hint orbs that would help guide you a bit, but they didn't make the deadline.

Not a bad start on a Zelda II-like game. I couldn't figure out how to get very far, but I managed to get the blue orb in the first palace that told me I could jump higher, but I didn't really notice my jump improve, and I still couldn't get over obstacles or reach any of the red orbs.
