Aliens vs Rng by Valicitor

[raw]
made by Valicitor for LD 38 (COMPO)

gamejolt_icon.png

This was my second time entering the LD compo, and this is my entry this time around, I drew inspiration from "cards against humanity" and tried to lean towards that sort of dark humor.

With the time constraint I wasn't able to add as much content as I'd of liked to cram in so please forgive the lack of options available at the moment.

Tools Used: Visual Studio 2015, Photoshop 2017, HTML5, Javascript, JQuery 2.1.4

I have since updated my Entry post-jam, so please take that into consideration

I like the design of the planets (They look like those from Kurzgesagt / In a nutshell). The options I get are repeating, it keeps telling me the same 3 or 4 options all the time. Are there no more?

The art looks nice (as already mentioned it looks very similar to Kurzgesagt). Do you generate the art for the current race?

Is there a way to reset the game? I killed all the military but then even in a 'new' world (with the dice button) it always said that there is no military anymore.

The idea is nice and I'd like to say the execution is the same other than one glitch, that the replies dont correspond to the option i chose, for example when i chose to support the caste system it failed without my support, and when i decided to abolish the caste system "the people believe me, total war has been avoided. Otherwise this game is awesome, i love the art and as other people have said the style is similar to Kurzgesagt. Nice idea, i'll be waiting for any updates!!!

The concept is absolutely brilliant, and with a few more options it could be a great game. At some point in every play through I seemed to wipe the population, never really got to see the benefit of getting higher tech & unity scores but I'm sure I'm just not noticing the changes they bring around. The art style is simple but very fitting, and all round I think it's a great entry! Well done!

A fine random generator & random event machine. It's not much more than that, but hey it does what it claims to do! The audiovisuals are great too (third on the Kurzgesagt bandwagon).

The only bug I can find is the same event conclusion message sometimes repeating for multiple different events.

Those aliens sure were aggressive. A 0 population planet is much more peaceful, my job here is done.

RNG FTW! :game_die:

A little too much rng, I'd say. I got the same event (caste system) something like 5 times in a row. I was a bit confused as to what effects my choices had on what was going on.

Still, I had a chuckle at some of the events/options. Well done.

I really like the art style and user interface, though the text could be a bit bigger. Really fun and simple, kind of reminds me of Spore, I just wished there were more types of 'incoming messages' as i kept getting the same ones more often the longer i played. I also always ended up killing a lot of the population a lot of times

This game looks quite polished, although I couldn't seem to get the hang of being in charge. Reminds me of my unsuccessful days playing Sim City :) Nice work.

Let all people die, was avoided. 10/10, would destroy life on purpose again.

I really like the art style. I love how each planet and alien race looks different. I think the concept is really cool too, and I had a good time playing it. I did encounter some bugs (I think). For example, I got the same "a caste system has been established" event probably 6 or 7 times in a row. A little bit later, no matter what the event was I always got the everyone dies result from the world war event.

Pretty nice idea and cool graphics + music. Bit too random and suffers from few bugs.

The art is really nice! I got responses for the wrong card a lot, it seemed. It was a really cool idea, but I think the player's choices should be felt more.

This was cool. Graphics remind me of Kurzgesagt videos. Very nice narrative delivery with how hard it is to win. Good work!

Cool UI, concept and game design, too bad that events are too repetitive, would be far more fun with more content :)

Nice idea and concept. The graphics are cool and the design of the planets look quite similar to our own game (which was the reason I initially got interested in this game). Audio was also fitting. But there was a clear lack of variety when it comes to content, since I got the same 3 or 4 messages over and over again. Still a nice entry!

Some feedback would be really appreciated!

It took some time for me to notice that Ambassadors shape, with eyes and mounts positions and numbers are also randomly generated. I thought that it was a game bug when they were in incorrect places
Overall good game idea that can be expanded in multiple ways.

I really enjoyed the humor in this game!

And I think I would've liked the gameplay too, if I hadn't encountered what looked like a lot of bugs. Some times the text I got as a result of my choice had nothing to do with what I was choosing. Like when a fight over a plot of land happened and my answer gave me the "the caste has been abolished" text. Also, some stats (like aggression) seemed unaffected even when it said aggression rose. Growth didn't seem to do anything either.

I like the concept, and the humor is great, but unfortunately the technical difficulties made me unable to actually play the game very much.

Great UI design and sound, but had the same problems as everyone else, kept getting the same limited messages again and often the response seems to contradict the choice, possibly the response is random also. The random generation of messages is sometimes quite entertaining, but only sometimes. Maybe a bit too much randomness and maybe the content that is randomly generated just needs more work for the parts to work ok together no matter the combination. Sure looks good though.

Thanks to you all for pointing out the bug, it looks like I've fixed it and have uploaded the fixed version.

I am also aware that there are not many cards in the game currently, there are only 4 and because the game selects a card (randomly), there is a chance you will draw the same card repeatedly, I intend to create more cards post jam so look forward to that.

Looks and sounds great. I like the ambience in it all. I repeatedly received same question, so I was unsure whether there were a 'correct' answer I didn't find.

Hey! Very polished and funny stuff.

Probably a bit too random for my taste, and unpredictable. This could be very good though if there was something more to do while you wait for messages (like some kind of resource management).

- lots of spelling errors haha. 'intelligence' for example
- LOVE the music, really set the mood.
- great art and look
- it wasn't obvious exactly what the dice does. is it basically just like restarting?!

Awesomejob :D

@stoogebag yeah, the dice button works as a reset button, so you should get a new planet, new race, new starting stats

Awesome idea. I like the design and the music which are totally fitting the game. The randomness made me several time a deity for the population but obviously time was limited so adding new text needs a little time. Good job!

The mechanic is solid. You just need more content. Nice entry. Javascript ftw!

Cool idea (reminds me of Reigns), and I liked the planet art as well! I'd consider adding a section to the page about what the different buttons do, though.

FYI, it looks like the repeating bug mentioned on your itch.io page may not be fixed on the build played in-browser as I got the same event multiple times in a row. Not sure if that's what you intended or not.

Nice game! I really liked the art style! The background music gave a good sense of atmosphere too.

The one thing I wish is that I could see what my current world state was when making decisions on the cards.

An intriguing concept!

The semi-random graphics, the UI and the music sets a pretty good mood, and you definitely have a promising platform for further development. The stats of the planet (which are changed by the current options) does not seem to have much of an effect currently? The main stat having an effect at the moment, seems to be the population count, which seem to just stop events from happening anymore, once the planet is dead.

I liked the dark humor of the game and current options, as well as the randomly generated planets (and their info stats). I laughed when I saw the age of one of the planets listed as "dragon". When/if the planet info stats have an effect on the planet itself, it would be useful to have some kind of overlay displaying this effect.

I am looking forward to seeing which additions you make to the game post-LD.

>Civil war ensues.
>Assuming direct control.
>Barren world remains.

Really nice concept, I also like the graphics very much they look good and the whole mood of the game is very good too. I have a comment about the questions, I think would be good if you showed or had a button to show the question with the answers there, it's not a big thing but if you have bad memory like me sometimes forget what were you asked. The dice change your planet but does it really affect the gameplay? I didn't understand that. Great game anyway.

Wow, what a fun game! I was intrigued after reading "cards against humanity" and was not disappointed! :D
great idea! I really wanted to find our more :)
for that time and a 1 person team, wow!
the graphics are simple and pretty, really satisfying for my eyes, and I have a thing for aesthetics, hence I'm right! :P

What would be nice to add if you plan to continue working on this game would be some kind of timer (unless time doesn't matter, I didnt really get that)
also, more events you need to actively avoid/react to (and the ability to pause) other than the chatboxes I mean, more like those little spaceships,
I think it would be really cool to have two different game mechanics (deciding/fighting) and put an interesting spin on your game :)

again, nice work!

That was really a interesting and fun game. Really liked this type of mechanic with some fun choices! The humor was indeed good too! Great job and keep it up with this idea!

I like the idea a ton. A cool twist on... what do they call these? 'Life Simulators"? Ya know, the a 'Monster Loves You' type game. It is a good start but pretty rough. I wish there had been more time to see where you went with it. Definitely worth continuing to build on.

One concern about the UI: The power/menu and RNG/restart buttons are right under the event responses. I could see someone accidentally double-clicking and losing their progress.

I really liked your entry. Quite clear visually and loved the humor, just sad there is not enough content to play. With some more work, I think it could be a really good and fun little game ^^. Good job!
