The Speed of Greed by C1FR1

[raw]
made by C1FR1 for LD 40 (COMPO)

Collect coins to spend on shops while you have the time, because every other level has a time limit. Don't get too attached to coins though, you won't be able run very fast when carrying them all...

Controls are WASD (s doesn't do anything, but what am I going to say? WAD?) space can also be used to jump.

The goal of the first level is to get through, while being fast enough to get through the second level (coins slow you down). The blue coins slow you down permanently.

level 1.PNG

The end of the level looks like this, it is on the left, but if you want to collect the least coins, you have to go right.. The top coin doubles your base speed, give you 5 coins, and reduces your jump height. The bottom coin takes you to the next level.

level 1 end.PNG

The goal of the next level is to get to the end where the shop is. The darkness drains your gold before killing you, it also kind of blinds you.

Its my first Ludum Dare and I am fairly new to LWJGL, so its not great, but enjoy!

For the next time, also test your export process as a pre-jam warm-up. I couldn't test/rate your game, sorry...

Huh ... Too bad dude ! You have to put the dll in the same folder that the jar if you want to run it without a console application. Check the source of my game if you want more precision, or ask me your questions, I will be glad to answer :)
(and that is not that severe, you can add the link after the deadline I think, just be fair and do not add features)

Hey! You seem to be new to Ludum Dare, so welcome to the family and congratulations on your game! :)

If you run into problems during the jam with exporting/hosting/compatibility etc. (we all know this can the most frustrating obstacle before the deadline...), feel free to create a blog post and ask, we're happy to help! I managed to build your project fine and export a runnable JAR. I included all the dlls and the res and src folder in the same path as the JAR, and it runs fine. If you still run into problems, let me know, I'll send you my export. It's fine to add this after the deadline, since you're not changing any of the game elements.

Also, some tips for next time:
- Shader files usually count as resources, as they are not compiled and have to be loaded at runtime. (I had to include your src folder to the JAR path because of this, which is not optimal...)
- If you can't make the window resizable, choose a size that works on most screens. I have a 1920x1080 screen, so your default window size doesn't really fit... Some people play on laptop screens with even lower resolutions. Especially with "pixely" games as yours, don't be afraid to lower the window size a little more, just in case.)
- Test your game early! That includes testing on another machine, with another human playing it (you can ask the community if there's noone around in real life).

Now about your game: At first I was a little confused why I suddenly moved so slowly, until I realized that's probably the point. :P I like your interpretation of the theme, and the level switching is nicely implemented! I had a hard time finding my way around the level -- maybe it would be better if the view was more zoomed out, or if there was a minimap or something. The lava level was already quite hard, especially since you have to start over completely if you die. Surely, the game has room for improvement, but it's a great start and even more awesome since you made it in 48 hours!

I think you've done a great job, and it would be a real shame if nobody got to play it. :)
If you need any more help, feel free to ask!

As alot say, for next time do some prepping, test out how you plan to do stuff. Myself i usually start 2-3 hours before theme launch and just test out all my tools.

Thanks for all the advice! My friend (ldjam.com/users/gnarly-narwhal, check his game out) looked at it and told me all the issues before I saw your posts (which essentially say the same thing).

The current link should work

@c1fr1 Great! Now you should label your GitHub link as Source, not as HTML5 (HTML5 is for games played in the browser). Otherwise filters won't work correctly. ;)

@phi indeed I should... I didn't mean to set that to html5 lol

The game needs some animation, otherwise everything looks static and very WIP-ish. Is this your first game? Don't worry, we were like you 5 years before, so don't give up. I'll say start by programming more games and learn how people did it, learn how to prioritize features and time. Simplest way is to join every LD compo and probably mini-compo as well. Overall, great effort.

Game is quite bad, but playable and that is quite an achievement for your first LD. There are so many thing bad in this game, but you probably know many of them so I won't write them down.

If you continue making games for LD, your skill will improve rapidly. So keep trying. You might want to try making a Jam entry (it's a bit easier and more relaxing).

I like the idea, and the fact that you have to go the long and hard way to avoid most of the coins to prepare for the second level. I hope you practice your drawing/animation skills for the next jam to make your game more appealing!

Dang that second level is hard. Great work, can't wait to see some animations in the future.
