Dropship: Orcs in Space by Ben Hopkins

[raw]
made by Ben Hopkins for LD 41 (COMPO)

alt text

arrows - move your dropship

z - pick up your mans

x - drop 'em

Supposed to be a mixture of arcade and RTS, but it's not really either. It was too ambitious but I like the concept and will try to do a post-compo version to realize the many things that didn't get in: more units, upgrades between levels, MUSIC, etc...

Consider level 5 as the "final" level. They are generated automatically after that point and become too difficult.

Bonus points to anyone who can name the two games I'm referencing here.

I found a way to cheese the game. Since none of the enemies stay on defense, I just shuttle-rushed 3 units to the enemy fortress for a quick victory. The only level it didn't work on was level 3.

Superb graphics. If I could change one thing, it would be to improve the camera - show more of the ground and less of the sky when your ship is the air.

Oh, and I found a minor bug: It can say "victory" after it says "defeat".

Overall, nice job!

Really neat concept. The controls were tight and the sprites look great. :)

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Yeah, that cheese was a result of not getting a feature in -- I'd like there to be towers that your soldiers must defeat before the dropship can pass. Another gameplay bug that helps you cheat a bit is that you can go above max cargo if you pick up many marines at the same moment (i.e. from the same y-coordinate). Definitely some other bugs due to it being my first time with Phaser 3 and Typescript for that matter.

Love the Starcraft-esque marine/medivac micro! The game is hard, looks really great, good job!

I like the art. I found 2 play styles. The cheese way, just drop them at their base. And the micro way, just keep moving them. Could be a really fun game if it had more content/features

Brilliant graphics and mood. The ships gravity was a little bit strange, took a while to learn to fly smoothly, good game.

It's like Starcraft Micro: The Game! Very interesting... the controls are a little floaty, which is a weird combination with the precision required. The art/animation is well done! I can't imagine doing proper art like that for a jam.

Am I SlayerS_boxer now? Beautiful game. Great concept. I love the idea of playing from this supporting perspective. The controls were difficult but it still felt good zipping around.

Cool concept and executed well!

I did find I could just pick up my mans and drop them at the enemy base to insta-win. Enemy base needs an AA gun to stop this xD

Graphics were really impressive, and really suited the setup. Would have been nice if there'd been a few more mechanics, as most levels could be beaten by simply flying a couple guys over the orcs. Still, nice job!
