MiniGame Racing by Deprecat

[raw]
made by Deprecat for LD 41 (JAM)

The unholy blend of a racing game with a mini-game rush. A Wario-Kart if you will.

This was a blast to make, I wish I had more time to make graphics that weren't placeholders but this is my first jam and I worked alone. So all in all, I think I did alright!

Going to keep practicing so I can get even better! Don't be afraid to offer constructive criticism, I won't get better without honest feedback

Perfect concept and very fun little Game! I was so bad at this but enjoyed it nontheless! The only distractions I managed to overcome where the "Hold down" and "Mash"! Maybe the distractions could increase in difficulty as you pass to higher levels?

@Groggi thanks so much! I'll admit, even I'm really bad at this game. My friends eventually got good enough to beat ot multiple times and I'm jealous.

I'd love to balance this more and flesh it out, theres a lot of fun possibilites

Damn it was hard! Its a really cool idea though, I kept wanting to play it and win. Music was catchy but a bit too staticy. Would have been nice to see some art with this! Great job

Would appreciate if you gave mine a go! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/left-for-bait

@fidrik Thanks so much! Hopefully now that the hard parts over I can find time to replace these old placeholder graphics.

Will absolutely take a look at yours too, thanks for playing!

haha what an idea. way too hard, yet very realistic display of distraction... distracting. Like wow no matter how mentally prepared for the distractions I was, they still got me. As above, hold and spam were the one I could pass. Would benefit from better balancing, perhaps even non random events (compensated by more level progression) youd get to see how often you got distracted by that same thing! Unfortunate you didn't have time to make it pretty, there's a great concept there.

Feel free to check my entry, its got racing too!

Thanks @joh While I did wish I had time to make it pretty, I think the simple graphics help people see what needs to be fixed in the core play, so I'll take it as a blessing rather than a curse. Now that I see the potential as a rage-type game, I think some clever level design will elevate it

I'll check yours out too :) I really love racing games, so it'll be fun to see how others twist the genre

Very fun concept! I like the effect that you put in when you get close to the wall and the feel of controlling the car!

One thing to change is maybe only play the tutorial once in level one.

Nice and simple, I really like it!

The wall highlighting was a really cool idea too.

A minor point, but I did find that sometimes I could ignore doing the distractions completely if the distraction placement wasn't annoying enough. Not sure if that was intentional though, but if it wasn't, maybe you could tie in the distractions to winning the level so people have to deal with the distractions? Anyway just a random thought.

Cool stuff!

Very simple concept executed quite well! Took a bit to get used to it, but pretty fun. I think I did 4 or so laps around the circular track before I eventually crashed.

Had so much fun playing it! It is really challenging and it could be used for a more serious topic like text and driving.
Even though the art is simple, it is really functional.

Great work, congratulations on the project!

This games so infuriating, I couldn't stop playing it, felt like I was punishing myself lol, It felt like it should be really simple, with the basic level designs but It was so distracting with the pop-ups! I tried so many times to make a full lap of the 3rd level I just couldn't do it, I wanted to but couldn't :( I had fun :P

Very nice game - combining text and driving work very well, congrats!

I also absolutely love the music on your entry. What did you use to create it?
By-the-way, you forgot to add the "audio" rating, which is sad because the game tune is very catchy!

I'm much better text and driving in real life lolol.
Nicely put. The challenges could be translucent - as is you hardly see the road :P
Of course the hardness makes it fun. Nice one

You had a really good and simple idea, and it felt good to play. I just wish restarting went a bit faster. Great job overall!

Great concept ! It was a fun game to play, but very hard ! I couldn't get pass the 2nd level. I'm not good at multitasking.

That was pretty fun. Music was great too. Ignoring mom made the game much easier to get through the levels, so that was great haha.

Good job!

Very good for a first jam ! Don't mind about the "placeholders graphics", I find them totally in the mood of the game, and somehow polished as placeholders (I mean, *my* placeholders are without effects XD). The gameplay is interesting, the game is hard but playable, and that's all the "mandatory" things on a jam. Well done, and I follow you, so I can watch your next LDs

Very fun ! :)

It's a bit hard, but not too much. The only thing I want to reproach you it's graphism, but I understand that you haven't enough time.

GG anyway ! :ok_hand:

I found it easiest to play by ignoring the distractions entirely and just driving the car underneath!

I agree with @radical-dog I feel like concept would have worked better if the prompts were easier to get rid of, and could stack on top of each other. The fact that there would only be one distraction at a time meant that I could just ignore it if its not blocking my vision. It makes for kind of a funny PSA about texting and driving though, the best solution is just to not.

@Radical Dog @niborious you guys both nailed it! It really did become a distracted driving psa over time, so I wanted to leave the option of ignoring the distractions to continue driving. While I could probably balance it more, that is 100% valid

Very difficult game, it was fun and I kept playing it but certainly felt frustrated because of all the popups

I feel that the turn radius a bit too big but the visual warnings were really nice so that you could avoid crashing into walls. The popups should probably have been easier to get rid of, like pressing a single key but they should have been more frequent and stack on each other as others have said.

The graphics were nothing special but they worked. Using some other colours would have been an easy way to make it look nicer and not so plain.

Overall, well done. It was a unique game and I had fun playing it
