The top drone racing pilots in the world are turning their sights to the the hyper-competitive world of gardening! In this arena of aeration, these pilots' seeds will surely be tested. Sign-ups open now! You could be the next top sky-mulcher!

In Drone Gardening League, pilot your drone around the small offshore island arena. Each round of the tournament lasts just a few minutes. Periodically, your garden will be scored. The drone with the highest score at the end of the round wins. Between rounds you can re-equip your drone with other modules to help reach victory. Maybe bring new flower seeds in. If those flowers defend themselves or you accidentally spill some high-test weedkiller, well, that's just drone gardening for you.

Mechanics

  • You have a deck of cards that control various features of your drone. You can swap out cards between rounds.
  • Each card requires various resources listed on the card.
    • Battery (white): recharge by returning to your base station
    • Water (blue): suck up water by hovering over the water offshore
    • Elixer (purple): acquired automatically, or extract some from purple goop deposits around the island
  • A panel of judges score your garden every 10 seconds
    • 4 fully-grown plants are worth a star
    • Starflower and royal starflowers are worth more
    • The current standings are shown in the top left

Reviwer Notes

  • you are the red player, you can change your drone between rounds
  • There are more cards if you scroll (it may not be obvious)
  • The first level is a bit of a tutorial, mostly to get used to the controls
  • There is no penalty for losing a round
  • you must have 15 cards in your deck to start a new round. You will have to add cards after the tutorial
  • There is no end state. There are three maps after the tutorial that are picked at random.

Change Log

  • 8/13/18: card rendering fixes, fix sorting in the deckbuilder and remember which drone you picked, fix arrow keys, prevent base from being killed, fix some grid highlights, AI fixes
  • 8/13/18: fix card list truncating the available cards at various resolutions, fix poison cloud card so it doesn't keep coming back into your hand
  • 8/17/18: added a post compo version that greatly improves and simplifies the controls. You tap a button to select a card, tap it again to use it, and hold it to discard it.
  • 8/19/18: Added error logging and fixed a soft lock bug

Quite liked the deckbuilding aspects but had very little idea what led to a good performance, haha. Enjoyed the pseudo-volumetric effect

I love the idea. Everything is ok, but I am bad playing this game. Idea is really new and nice.
Nice work!

Really interesting game. Loved the graphics! Could be a lot of fun with some more polish and different challenges. I'll watch the project page to see what you keep adding to it!

I wanted to try your game but the window is just black. I tried both the original and the post-compo. Let me know if you've been able to fix it and I will come back to try again.

I didn't quite grasp how to get the highest score but it was a lot of fun. I was just spamming plants but could see that there is some strategy to work with.

@reax - I don't know what could be causing that, so I've added more error logging to both versions of the game. If you (or anyone else) run into the error again, please do the following so I can figure it out:

1. From the start menu search for "Event Viewer" and open it
2. Go to Windows Logs -> Application
3. There is probably a new error near the top (if you already had it open, you might need to click refresh from the Action menu)
4. Look for one an Error with an event ID of 1313 and click it
5. Look for "MSG" STACK" and "INNER" in the text on the bottom
6. Please let me know what those say

Here you go mate.
```
The following information was included with the event:
MSG: File loading error: ScaledFont base/font/medium bold
STACK:
INNER: System.FormatException: Input string was not in a correct format.
Tricky to understand at first, but after a couple of plays, really got into it. Excellent for a jam game!
@reax - Thank you so much! That was exactly what I needed to fix the bug!
I've updated both versions of the game - this should be fixed now.
@juxipolo Nice, it works now. I'm very much into drones my self and this drone planting concept is really cool to see in a game. It was interesting to play. An idea if you want to extend the game, would be if you could attack your enemies, or maybe if you could use an aggressive plant to eradicate enemies plants or such. I think some sort of combat mechanic would add an additional dimension to the game.
You mentioned in your video that cards in a real-time game didn't turn out so well. But I disagree, I think the implementation of this card system works quite well. But of course like any game, things can be tuned forever. Especially when it's made in less than 3 days!
