Pixlets by MaggardJosh

Play on Itch.io (WebGL/Windows/Android)
Description
Pixlets are simple creatures. They need 2 things:
- Food
- Sleep
... That's it.
Hatch your Pixlets and gain coins from them over time. Make sure there are enough trees planted for each type of Pixlet. Don't feel too bad if your Pixlet dies, they have a very short lifespan.
Controls
- Drag and Drop items from the bottom of the screen to place them in your Pixlet garden.
- Click on "?" Eggs to unlock them with coins.
Hints
- Different Pixlets have different needs/personalities. Some might need more sleep and less food. Others might need have shorter lifespans but give you more coins. Try experimenting with all types.
- You can click on trees to sell them and make room for different types.

^ I can relate to these simple, cute creatures. Awesome game, simple core mechanic that works really well. Most importantly a lot of fun. When I was playing (I just clicked the link without reading) one of the notes I made was 'Mention it'd be cool to play on my phone' as I read through your ld entry page I noticed it said Android! :D This is a game I'll actually keep around and play on my mobile. Please add to this. It's like tamagotchi but better.
I have to admit that this kind of game isn't really my bag. I found myself turning on MST3K on Netflix to kill the time as I was waiting for the pixlets to do their work. For players like me, maybe a "speed up time" option?
@binaryferret Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! I'd love to do a post-jam version of this and release on Google Play.
@simonhutchinson Hey, I appreciate you playing anyway. These types of games aren't for everyone. I had honestly thought about putting in a "speed up time" button, but I felt like that would go against the spirit of the game.
Interesting game. I liked how casual it was, the interpretation of the theme, and the cuteness of the characters.
The music was cool for like the first 10 minutes of game-time. After that, it became boring fast. There were a few simple sound effects. Graphically there's not a lot to complain about at all, especially considering this is essentially a casual simulation. It's retro and it's awesome. The UI was good too. I couldn't work out how to un-plant a tree for the longest time.
Mechanically I felt like I couldn't tell exactly who my pixlets were. They all fairly identical. No preferences I could see. I liked the trees as a means to avoid constant feeding. Giving me more ways to care for or bond with my pixlets would certainly have complicated the simulation but also added to the fun factor. The gameplay could also use a much more exciting beginning. The first 15 minutes or so I just spent watching my first pixlet. If the pixlets interacted somehow that'd be cool!
Addicting game with some really solid potential. I really like it!
Pretty satisfied with my diverse little planet in the end. The graphics are cute and the tiny screen was a neat idea and really made it a visual package.
Even though there's little interaction, without any information about the slimes I almost felt a little stressed out by constantly looking for my populace. "Is purple ok?" "Yes purple is ok, purple is always ok, those seem to not be able to die" "Is orange ok?" "Holy! Orange is down to 2, start the breeding machines!"
Nice work!
That's so bad UX friend, when you reset or delete something be sure to get confirmation from the player instead of just go ahead and delete everything. How am I supposed to know the trash can icon mean "delete everything and go back to the beginning?"
The game is great though. From what I've seen: catchy theme song, addictive gameplay, adorable visual. I don't think I have the patience to replay again to see it through to the end though ._.
I liked a lot your game, you managed to execute a simple idea very well. I'm playing it right now and it has that "something" that forces you to play until you unlock everything.
Congrats!
@lars-dk Appreciate that feedback! The original idea included the Pixlets being more unique and also interacting with each other. Maybe post-jam I can add some of that! Thanks for playing!
@elzach Hey! That'd be a cool game mode, making sure at least 1 of every species is alive. Would definitely change up the strategies! Thanks for playing!
@richard-michael-smith Thanks for playing! Green eggs are the last thing you can unlock, so you basically beat it! :)
@avavt :( I know! I'm so sorry, the trash can was a very last minute addition so it wasn't entirely thought out. I'll fix that in the post jam version for sure! Appreciate your feedback!
@stoemason Wow, thank you much! Thanks for playing!
@camilo :) That's great to hear! Thank you!
@drmargarido You just have to get to 300K coins then you can unlock charmander :P
@brainy-beard That's the best LD compliment I've had I think :D Thanks!
Well done on your game! The art and feel behind it were fantastic, even though they were minimalistic.
- Show counts of each type
- Show the reason why they died, whether it was old age, starvation, sleeplessness, currently I don't really know what to fix because I don't really know why they're dying.
- Sleep you can't really control in any way so it seems a bit pointless, maybe add "beds" or something.
- Make the scrolling of the shop panel more obvious.
Great work!
@impbox Really appreciate that feedback! I'll add those to my notes :D
@wheerd Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it :)
@fiery-squirrel :D Awesome feedback thank you!
@loveapplegames Haha yeah the blue pixlets are definitely OP, shh don't tell anyone! ;)
It'd be nice to get a little more feedback on the return on the different pixlets, but I guess working that out is part of the game :) The audio is what going insane sounds like, but they're such adorable little guys that I welcome the madness. Great work, super addictive and an impressive amount of polish for a compo entry!

But a really nice entry, good job !
