Simple but effective mechanics. However I didnt understand the difference between dash and attack upgrades. Seems to me that they were the same thing?

my best strategy so far was to not pickup items at all ... (i reached the green torch levels)
maybe the "pickup/not pickup" balance should be improved in order to force the player to carry items.
Should be a bit easier (for instance double the amount of HP - we could need it, so we don't get frustrated :P)
It would be nice if the items granted more interesting effects, like knockback, poison, etc. Randomizing the item stats could also make collection more enticing.
It is, however, very polished and nice looking, so it's still great!
The character is easy and fun to control.
The sound effects are good, and go well with the powerful 8-bit soundtrack!
The level design could be a little stronger, though.

I completed most of the game without dropping a single item, which made me think that maybe there should be more hazards that punished you if you were carrying too many. That would make players have to choose which to leave behind.
