Pizza Defender by Sloyd

You play as a piece of mozarella with a machinegun, on a pizza. Zombie ingredients come towards you and start noming on the pizza nad shrinking it. You can only walk on pizza so you need to defend it. If the pizza gets too small, you will have no space to move on, and you will most certainly get eaten.
Unimplemented ideas: - You win after a certan amount of waves. - If you kill the zombie ingredients, they become normal. And if you get a certain amount of needed normal ingredients, than you win the level. (Missions style) - If a zombie that does not eat pizza gets to the Basilic Braga(basilics name.. Don't ask), you lose.

PS: Its my first time, so there were a lot of unclear rules and submission uncertanties..
Controls:
- WASD to move
- Mouse to aim
- Space or mouse click to shoot.
Game was made from scratch using: Photoshop - hand drawn and animated. FlashDevelop - for coding (no engine whatsoever. basic actionscript3). Didnt use AS3 for a long time. This was a bit of a bad choice. Flash IDE - just because I was lazy to import some images using FlashDevelop. No sound :( didn't get to. too little time :( Ported to OpenFL afterwise.
I wasted time drawing and animating aditional monsters that I didnt get to include (though they were 80-90% finished).. It was tough! Here are some of them:

Submitted in the last minute directly from DropBox :D Almost failed because of hosting. (forgot there was an aditional hour to submit the game). But later added to itch.io
I think I will compile a timelapse..
Tweet at me bro?
Enjoy!!!!!

Is there a chance that this will disqualify me from comp?
hmm..
Edit: ok, I needed to add a description to the link.
If you really want to I think I read in the rules that it's allowed to fix bugs? Don't take my word for it though, it's my first entry as well. :) It should be on the rules page though.
I will see.. I think I will add another link so people would know how was it before changes and after.
However after the zombie ingredients eat enough of the pizza, new zombie ingredients take longer to get to the pizza, and thus give me enough time to kill all of them without them eating the pizza.
I would love to play this again with an added difficulty curve and maybe sound.
Good job!
The game itself misses some mechanics, why you would actually want to run on the pizza - ATM you can stay in the middle and just shoot the opponents, without moving.
Sound would have been great, but hey, you manage what you manage. You should have opted out in that category, though.
Thanks for keeping the original version around, though in this case I absolutely agree that a bug fix is perfectly within the rules. The rules are vague, because life is vague, and bugs as well
These visuals and animations are absolutely lovely. Great job!
However, it is too over to said it can go on steam on current stage, the gameplay is a kind of too flat now, some more sound effects, weapon types, level up, dead body to recover the pizza hole... the game can be a lot more fun to play with if you can play more different content in it!
but anyway, it's already a cool entry for a compo! good job!
First of all, amazing graphics and animations 5/5. The gameplay is very smooth but missing any kind of feedback makes it fell a bit lacking. I think even some very basic 8-bit sound would add a great deal of impact to the gameplay but with only 48 hours you made a really good entry!
Graphics are awesome!

Overall though, great job!
As other mentionned, add sounds + increase the pace of ennemies could have been super cool !
Add combos, camera shake and a hit animation too.
Your futures ideas of improvements on your itch.io page sounds really nice !
Congratulations
+ Screen shake
+ Score
+ Sounds
+ Particles(When you move around or enemies eat pizza)
+ Death animations (Dead enemies laying around for a few seconds or something like that)
Still, considering you didn't use an engine the game was very good.
I distinctly told you NO OLIVES, however. :)
I think everybody has pointed out the need for more depth to the game. It wasn't terribly challenging, but dang if I don't like looking at pizza.
Oh, and great animation.
Overall I really enjoyed this and found it kind of funny. One criticism, I'd avoid doing Flash games. They're getting to the point where players have to do way to much to allow the browser to play them and I wouldn't be surprised if soon they prevent it completely.
I find it sad that there is no sound, or goals. It turns the gameplay too repetitive too fast. You have a very great base right there, I'm sure you can expand it into something better :)
well done !
- Core Idea
- Art Style and visuals in general
- Pizza
What I didn't like:
- For the whole playtime I felt like there was not much skill involved, I'd just run around holding space and firing bullets. It looks like you didn't have time to refine the gameplay.
- I would've loved at least a score label :D
I won't say anything about the sound because it's a compo and it's hard to do everything in 48 hours, so.. yeah.. here are my thoughts :]
The lack of soundseffects makes it seem unfinished.
As you must know by now, this art is fantastic. Really loved how your player's walkable space was taken away one bite at a time, I know how tough this can be to get pixel perfect!
This lacks pacing right now and a way to really measure your progression. If UI text is not your thing maybe do something more visual like changing the background color. SOMETHING to show the player that they beat x wave and have x waves left to beat the level.
SFX, camera shake, particles, and faster moving enemies would help this game a lot IMO.
Well done, it was a bunch of fun! Too bad about the sound but I always forget/don't have time, so I get it. Cheers!
Lovely graphics and animation!
@sublustris I didn't use flash for a very long time. So after making this project for LD in flash, I found out that browsers don't support it already (like chrome), and that soon even Adobe will not support it. So I quickly "ported" it to OpenFL (You should really check it out if you are an AS3 coder. It is open source, 99% like AS3, and you can build for most platforms iOS, Android, PC, Linux, HTML5..)..
@djeycreations @jakier @silkworm-sweatshop I'm working on everything that is suggested, and more :) (In my free time). But I will update more after the voting is over.
Thanks everyone!
Though enemy spawn rate (and player DPS) are flat throughout the game which makes it a bit less engaging in the lategame as there is no race not to let your DPS fall behind spawnrate.
Also as the territory becomes smaller the game becomes... easier? Like if you don't have to worry about preserving the area and can focus on shooting enemies up. Maybe if some enemies shot back and you needed some free space to dodge their bullets the "not let them eat pizza away" mechanic would have been more interesting.
And not sure about other versions, but Web version Broccoli death animation wasn't playing properly.
* Broccolis and tomatoes seem to chew up the same amount of pizza, so I made sure to shoot broccoli first, as they take fewer shots to kill. Maybe make tomatoes take bigger bites, or introduce some more ingredients with different eating patterns.
* ~~Make the bad guys come in waves - maybe you can have victory condition if you beat all the waves without dying or losing all the pizza~~ - oh, you already thought of this :)
* Score based on number of bad guys killed or amount of pizza left
* Different weapons - maybe you could have a flame thrower that would cook bad guys into the pizza and rebuild it
Anyway, fantastic game - I'd love to see you keep working on it!
1. Add something to add to the impact of you weapon and when the enemy bites into a chunk of the pizza when it makes contact with the enemies a screen shake and/or a sound effect should go perfectly.
2. Add different themed weapons - This can really hit home the atmosphere you are creating in your game. Make pizza themed weapons that fire different toppings that could make the game really satisfying to play.
I very much appreciate the effort that you put into this game and I hope you work on it more in the future :).
And also PIZZAS <3
Cheers!
Guys, pls rate my game? I need a lot more ratings.

Good work !
@connorthompson yup, my first ludum, also my first jam ever. I participated in some programming competitions while in school, dont know if it counts as a jam :)
@atom0520 the pizza is a big sprite, to which I blend draw the bite sprites. the bites are(can be) 1 channel bitmaps that only affect the pizzas alpha. there were no triangulations whatsoever to create a navmesh, in case you were wondering :D. as for the suggestions - work in progress, my friend :)
thanks yall!!!
And as of this comment. I am second place on the leader board.
I did miss some powerups and sounds, though.
I think this has a lot of potential with more enemies/bosses, balanced waves and a hero/turret approach to defense.

Great aesthetic. Clearly more of a rough draft than anything, but I like what's there!
I feel like the title of the game should be...."The Cheese Stands Alone" =P
The only complaint I have is that my finger now hurts :D
That's one step too far!
Good execution on the gameplay and graphic departement. I'm a bit sad you don't have a soundtrack that mixes elements of Tarantella and horror music. Good work, and watch out for thoses broccolis!
@jonathan-lorenz @lu7cie aaah yes, the sound, most requested thing :) I know.. I'm sad about that too.. It would sell the game like a motherfucker! thats what you get when you are limited to 48 hours, but you waste time on perfecting the animations ;)
