Rythmer by TheWGBbroz

[raw]
made by TheWGBbroz for LD 41 (JAM)

Introduction

This game combines the 2 "incompatible" genres: Shooter and Rhythm. The goal is to defeat all enemies in each level, by only shooting on the beats of the music. If you try to shoot when the music is not on a beat, you will take damage.

It is highly recommended to enable your sound while playing the game!

Neat idea and with some work it could be quite fun game. I had a bit hard time figuring out when should shoot and when not. I think the screenshake was supposed to give a direction to that but I did not find that too helpful. Also, I think the rhythm aspect could also be attached to other mechanics as well.

But overall, fun idea and as a marathon game pretty good presentation as well!

By the way, since the art is not your own (at least fully), you should opt out in graphics ratings.

Nice concept, I struggled with the beat though. Not sure if I'm just bad.

A good interpretation of the theme. Haven't seen a rhythm shooter before. Slightly lacking in content but a good idea all the same.

The music is nice, the controls are acceptable (f is a little close to A/D though). I had a hard time to figure out what qualifies as a beat and what didn't, and I also for the life of me couldn't kill any enemies (even if I didn't take damage from the beat somehow my bullets never killed an enemy). All in all a nice idea and the basic stuff is done well (basic controls and graphics), but the finer bits could use some more work.

Not sure if I managed to find the beat ^^
But really cool concept. It has potential. Good job!

I like the idea and music. Took awhile to figure out where the beat was, but even after that it was rather difficult.

Good idea, but I found it a little hard !
And why the screen move like this ? :')
Also the graphics are really pleasants !

Wow that was so cool. I wish the jumps had to be on beat as well, but I guess that would make it really hard.

I do wish that there was a different key used for shooting.

Only issue I had was that jumping had feels sluggish, and the gravity wasn't fast enough for jumping. Other than that, that was an amazing game. I hope you continue work on this game in the future.

Nice idea and game, I managed to beat the first level, but it probably took me way longer than it should have, I kinda went for only the easily distinguishable beats, and there were a few too many beat changes in the music, once I got the hang of a pattern, it already changed to another one ^.^ Also a minor point, maybe make the enemies flash or something when they take damage to provide some user feedback

Nice concept, great idea and perhaps one of the most difficult combinations to pull off. I took me a while to find the beat but when i found it, it was enjoyable. The screen effect is cool and it does help with the beat. Going forward, I feel like you should make it super-duper easy for the player to know when too shoot (i.e they turn a certain colour). Have a look at Cytus and Deemo for ideas.

I'm no good at rhythm games so I killed myself pretty quick. I love platformers though and I thought the jumping and movement was very intuitive and felt good.
