PowerDown by PRANEET56

made by PRANEET56 for LD 39 (JAM)

This is a game created in 10 hrs (approx.), couldn't utilize the whole time due to few reasons.

//PowerDown//

A platformer adventure game, really fun but hard-to-beat kinda game. Has tutorial level included. Aim: Fix all generators to prevent power failure. There is no time limit as the game itself is hard without time limit. Hope you have fun :)

For such a small and simple game it is pretty well done and surprisingly interesting.

But again, as alwasy - controls badly require more polish. First of all - Up arrow is really uncomfortable as jump button. The walls completely stopping your horisontal movement is well, "realistic", but completely uncalled for in platformer game since every user expects horisontal movement to be unaffected by obstacles.

Also trap doors - you usually expect it to kill you only when it lands on you from above and not from mere touching it.

But overall a god job. It seems you used your own engine for this. What libs did you use?

Really nice music and pretty good graphics. It's a nice concept and reasonably well executed.

Gameplay has a few very annoying bugs (it's possible to get stuck, holding right/left going into a wall, then jumping -> I would expect to proceed to the side after clearing the ledge, but I have to press the left/right button again) and some of what I think is bad design (that generator over the floor of crates, It looks like halfway through the map there is an unclimbable area blocking access to the rest of the level?)

I played this on stream at https://www.twitch.tv/videos/163569305 - timestamp 00:09:38

Thanks for all the reviews! @sgstair I'm really glad that you streamed it on twitch! And yes I'm aware that there are bugs but I couldn't help it as the game was finished in the last moment and I didn't have much time to polish the game. I can make updates if you want it though. The unclimbable area can actually be climbed if you jump once on to the wall and then jump once more while colliding with the wall to perform some sort of wall jump.

Really nice game, with fun graphics and music. It needs a little bit more polishing(player can stuck into wall), but it is very fun to play. Great Job!

Nice and simple game, it has a good concept, and although needing a few fixes (wall stuck, jumping too sensitive and hard on up arrow, maybe space bar woulb be better) has a good potential. The music is groovy and goes well with the theme. Although the graphics are quite funny I'd probably improve the litle guy, I could just see some pants and shoes with a hard hat walking around xD

Great job for the time frame you had!

Nice retro-style platformer! Jumping left/right took a little getting used to for me, but once I got it, it was no problem going through the maze. I also like the addition of in-game reminders throughout.

Nice job for such a short timespan! It's Game Maker, isn't it? I like this game, but it's way too difficult for me. And the difficulty comes from the fact I cannot move and then jump, I have to jump first and then I can move... Which caused me -25 lives. Sigh. But that killer trap part in the upper left is on purpose, I'm absolutely sure. Nice game, I liked it, but please fix the controls :)

Simple but fun. Little spikes were a nice touch  Load spawnpoint saved me when I got stuck into the wall. In the first place where wall jump was needed I managed to pass but didn't know how. In the second place (where it was much more necessary) I figured it out, but it only works with walls at your right side.

I didn't think jumping with up arrow was a bad choice, maybe because I play piano. Note taken.

*(BTW, you should opt-out of audio if you didn't make it)*

For ten hours, this is pretty neat! I'm curious as to how you made such a functional engine so quickly, haha. As has been said, the controls are a tad wonky and sticky. Especially, I found, with crates after they have disappeared and clipping up cliffs. But very solid for such a short dev time, and nice going for the zany and garish retro chic.

Very nice platformer! I included it in my Ludum Dare 39 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zr1O4LytQqQ
