Sweg not Fast by Ryvencore

[raw]
made by Ryvencore for LD 40 (JAM)

About the game

Game about lil' swegbot trying to survive the rain of cannons, gathering those precious crystals for the highscore. Having a fetish of carrying a infinity basket over his head does not stop swegbot, well maybe it does, only if it gets heavy. Be one with the lil' rascal, aim for the big score!

!!! If you are getting bored, press letter "B" while playing !!!

Our team

Because we are three programmers with little skill in art, ryvencore sacrificed himself to dedicate his time on learning fast blender via youtube tutorials. Meanwhile kem4 went crazy with item and buff system and did not stop bragging about it. Reenas as always, casual jammer, with a giant iMac, doing some coding in the corner of the room. In the end we got together a decent team and we are proud about what we made! :)

  • Programmer/Game designer @reenas
  • Programmer/Game designer @kem4 aka self proclaimed "god" of the item systems
  • Programmer/Artist/Game designer @ryvencore

This was pretty fun.

Art wise I'm impressed. I saw it mentioned that the artist had only just learned blender, yet Swegbot it so cute I'd love to have a little model of him on my desk.

The items were nice, I think. I honestly didn't notice them too much while playing, I was just making a mad dash towards the next gem. Though from the looks of it you have a nice system that's hopefully easy to expand upon with more variety. I'd like to see some more powerups. Maybe something like levitation, while it's active you can't fall in holes.

I only really had two problems with the game as it is.
Number 1 is the music. Judging by the fact that you opted out of the audio category I'm assuming you used something premade, which is fine. But music effects how the gameplay feels and is percieved. To me the music contrasted the gameplay. The gameplay felt light and frantic, like running from a bee. Whereas the music was dark and heavy, like a wave that's gonna push through everything in it's way.
Number 2 is the resolutiion. I have a 1366x768 monitor, yet when I set the resolution settings it was still too big. Buttons were getting cut off in the menu. This didn't happen during gameplay only in the menus, so it's probably an issue with UI scaling, which I have trouble with myself.

@minimurgle (Press B to enter the BOSS mode) We did miss this to mention to be honest that will speed up level. Also it will reset the platform. We had no sound guy so we just left it out.

We have item system that is very easy to expand upon items that comes in mind.

Thank you for your review.

I loved the music. The game felt a little retro, like a reversal of bomberman, which was nice.

I feel that the weight could have been made more pronounced, to really bring home that SWEG is heavy and not fast.

The theme didn't really come together in the final build IMHO — the prototype had like 10x more cannonballs shooting at you and seemed a lot more fun. Maybe could have made the "secret" boss battle a normal part of the game — that minigame was more engaging than the main game itself. Overall a solid execution, given you had only three team members. Also the SWEGbot was really cute :D
