Baldaquin 9 - I chose life by marcellus

[raw]
made by marcellus for LD 43 (COMPO)

Hello there, this it my 9th LD entry, this time with a little tribute to my friend @annagavaldakedavra. As it was his birthday this week end, we decided to cover one of his previous LD game, and that's what I did... With at least 3 games he made previous years.

Play with headphones !

Controls are pretty straightforwards :

Act 1 : Arrows to move, left click to drain power from things.

tip : there are only 2 objects you can drain in this "world" and the mouse icon doesn't show up randomly.

screenshot1.png

Act 2 : Right to accelerate, Down to crouch, Up to jump.

tip : the timer is tight but it's doable

screenshot2.png

Act 3 : Arrows to move.

tip : have fun before completing the objective

screenshot3.png

It was made with Construct 2 under 48 hours. Graphics with paint.net. Audio with my mouth, kitchenware and Audacity. Music generated with Jukedeck.

Have fun.!

I found your game pretty confusing once I got to the "afterlife"(?) stage. I really loved the intro, as the player was just about as confused as the player character, and the poetry/rhyming added a comedic, interesting, and novel element to what would've been an otherwise fairly bland setup. I would love to see some explanation of what to do once you got to the afterlife(?) so I could continue the game, since I was pretty hooked by the intro and mysterious factor. If you can add some cohesion, I think it would add alot to the overrall appeal of the game.

Hmmmm... unfortunately, I had no idea what I was doing after the intro scene. The dude I was walking around as looked pretty dang cool and eventually I got an icon to use the left mouse button. But, I walked and walked and never found anything to use the mouse button on :(

I got 5 more seconds because I'm too bad. :v:

It took me a bit to figure it out, but I did get through the whole thing. I could sense the emotion (I guess) that was present throughout, and made me push through the whole game. I wouldn't say the "fun" factor was very high though... I think the one I had the most fun with was the 3rd part. The second part was just frustrating, and the first part was super confusing but I eventually got there. But yeah, nice work, lots of different stuff here and all implemented pretty well, and the homage was moving for sure. Nice job!

As the god tells you : "One of two star you must bleed, West or East, is as you feel".

@jisam

Lucky you, you could listen to the amazing music for a little longer.

@doomshmuck

Thanks for this amazing comment, hope you did enjoy backflipping like hell as a little gold fish before achieving your fate.

I have to admit it was 3 pretty nice games, and definitely challenging too, well, except for the first one :p
Well done!

Hehe, try playing it and make you own opinion maybe.

@marcellus, that is opinion after playing it. Your game got the highest amount of "WTF per second" so far.

Thanks a lot, this is the most amazing comment I've ever received in 9 LD !

The first part was frustrating (I figured out by reading comments and guessing). The second part was a little difficult. Other parts were really great. I was always expecting what will appear on the screen! It just went black after 10 seconds. It really ended?

@lastleaf

If you mean the last last black screen with a light switch sound at the very end, yes that is the end. Congratulations for reaching it by the way.

That was pretty interesting.

I liked the art of the character in the first act. Beyond that I was just unsure what to expect at any given time.

Great job! All 3 games were creative, the second one was really hard I got 5 more seconds a lot. The writing was especially good.

That was one trippy experience! :laughing: I was not able to get by the second area because I just don't have the reflexes anymore.

I finally made it past the first act, but couldn't get past the second. I was never good at those types of games.

@mattdacat @bugninja @kunonooni @great-bobleny ho, great, I hope you did not rate my game according to the 20% you've played then.

Spoiler alert for this kind of comment not to happen again :

DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU PLAN TO PLAY THE GAME IT WILL RUIN IT FOR YOU

1st act : turn left or right 90° then walk until moon / sun is in the middle of the screen, then hold left click for about 8 to 10 seconds.

2nd act : dash jump / dash jump / dash jump / normal jump / normal jump / normal jump / dash jump / dash jump / crouch + dash / normal jump / dash jump. With this method, you should beat the level with approximately 0.5 seconds left on the timer. If you can't, just die 20 times and get 5 extra seconds. FOREVER.

3rd act : wait / jump in the water / pick the 10 rings / accelerate towards up and jump out of the water with full speed / enjoy the life of a fish by doing some crazy backflips and try to hit the god while you're at it.

4th act : walk forwards and don't touch any other button, even when you ear that no one is following you. (orphea / eurydice style)

5th act : press right once.

BTW : my 66 years old father finished the game by himself in about 15 minutes without help. He failed more than 20 times on the rollerskating level but with the 5 extra seconds he managed to do it. The last video game he played was duck hunt on the NES.

I tried many times to get past the skate level. I made it to last jump a few times (I assume it was the last jump). The one where you have to jump through the opening in the vertical flames. For some reason I can't get the timing down, and I keep bumping into that last blue shelf.

This game is quite confusing, and the graphics look a bit weird in my opinion. However, I love the story and the different acts and gameplays. Really interesting! I enjoyed it. Congrats (:

One of the best games in this ludum dare. It is deep and very good. The roller skates were quite hard. Good that I got 5 seconds more :)

For my birthday i received : linen sheets, an Advent calendar with only homemade weed-chocolates inside, and this game. I very much like all of those.
You managed to remake my stuff with your unique style. Deep, fun and true. My favorite of the "baldaquin serie" !
