A Black Screen by qzqxq
There are tons of realistic games. There are plenty of 8-bit games. There are several 1-bit games. This is a 0-bit game*.
*and definitely not a cover-up for my complete lack of art skill
(Important note: Before playing, find a quiet place and use headphones, or else this game will be very hard to impossible)
Controls
- Arrow keys or WASD to move.
- R to reset a level.
- Space to skip the opening narration if you've already heard it before.
Notes
There are only 6 unpolished levels because I didn't have much time this weekend, and this was also the first time I did LD solo. Regardless, I hope you have fun and I would appreciate any feedback, even if there's not much to leave feedback on.
Also, the narration will tell you how to play, but in case you missed something or want to reread information on previous levels, you can find the game's script at this Google doc (spoiler warning, of course).

It had a constant grin on my face because I was so amazed of the concept of having a 0 bit game :D
** Innovation **
2D top down puzzle game (uh, boring)
Just kidding :p
**AWESOME** Never seen something like it.
** Theme **
You got the theme.. But the game as it is, has nothing to do with the theme. Like only the intro.. Don't know..
** Audio **
Was okay. No special sounds, +1 because it's all you deliver :p
** Humor **
Was fun.. :D
** Mood **
No big mood the game made for me..
** Overall **
I really enjoyed the concept. Was fun to complete the game. If it would have had more levels and objects to interact it would have been even better.
**Great Job!**
Seriously though, it reminds me of the times when I've had my first minor eyesight problems and decided to make a game that you can play without looking for when I go blind completely. Unlike yours it was a racing game though (you've had a navigator who told you when to turn and in what direction).
I enjoyed your game quite a lot. Sadly it doesn't look (no pun intended) like something you can expand on and make a full project of for obvious reasons. But then again, how many games are there for blind people really? I see quite a few gamers with different disabilities from time to time who have special tools and contraptions to play games, literally people with no arms playing mainstream action games. But there's not much you can do when you're completely blind. And then again, that's what I love about Ludum Dare - you can have games here that you won't see anywhere else because they only work in a game jam environment.
Anyway, on the game itself. I usually strongly dislike LD games with recorded voice, but this one is a nice happy exclusion from that rule. You have a nice voice and mic I guess. The levels are nice, I think there could be 1 or 2 more actually. The hardest one for me was the one with the maze, I think I've missed a turn to the left near the rightmost wall at least 2 or 3 times and went back to the beginning. Last level, surprisingly enough, I've completed on my first try and in seconds. It's almost too easy, could have beaten it with my eyes closed (pun intended).
Anyway, great job, looking forward for more original games like this one in this and future LDs!
neat concept and enjoyed playing.
once i sorted displaying flash in the browser it was fine ;)
Without a doubt this is THE most creative entry I've seen so far. The audio cues were easy and fun to follow, and your voice was definitely easy on the ears. The same cannot be said of the stars, though. I swear I still hear them although I can no longer distinguish where the sound comes from. Probably somewhere in between my ears.
Loved the levels (except the maze). They were all fun and short (all but the maze), and presented an enjoyable variation of the idea (sans the maze). Would definitely play it again (not the maze though).
Of all the compo games I've played so far your game easily takes the cake. Congrats!
Is there a jump? haha, maybe we need a diferent jump sound :)
would be fantastic background sound change more, like when u are walking throung grass
I love the graphics, jk :)
The concept of this game is great, and so is the execution.
At first, I had some difficulty passing the first saw, since I assumed that the movement was grid-based. Hence I pressed W instead of holding it down, which did not move me sufficiently fast to get out of the way of the way. Once I found out that I could keep pressing W to run, it clicked for me.
The sounds work very well as a navigation aid, and together with the "hit wall" sound, it made it possible to make a "mental map" of the level as you play.
Nice take on the theme!
>Darkness all around,
>with only sounds to guide me.
>Will I find the stars?
Some notes/replies:
- I was a little scared that the maze level would be overly frustrating, and my apologies to those who really didn't like it (like @mrtwister heh). I left it in because I thought all the other levels were a little too similar, and thought this would be an interesting, different kind of challenge, so I hope you can all forgive me. :P
- Based on the comments, it also looks like I was too conservative with the difficulty of the last level and could have made it a bit harder. Maybe I'll make a level with 4 stars and 3 saws and see how it goes, lol.
- @mortus Thanks for the detailed comment! Yeah, each LD, I always look forward to the games with high Innovation scores, since they generally have some really creative ideas that you wouldn't see anywhere else.
- @sarrixx That's a really good idea, I think I see what you mean and I agree it would have been really helpful on that level.
- @joebeard That's really interesting, sounds like a pretty cool class. And thanks for the comment, I'm glad you enjoyed at least some of the humor.
- @somnium It's interesting how many assumptions game developers make of players, and comments like this are helpful for pointing out the incorrect assumptions I made, so thanks! On a related note, when I got a friend to playtest this, he thought it was a 3D game at first as opposed to a top-down 2D game (which is why I added that note at the beginning of the first level).
Again, thanks everyone for all of the feedback! The peer judging has always been my favorite part of Ludum Dare, and it's always helpful reading what others have to say. And I dunno if anyone will see this, but if anyone reading this wants me to play their game and leave feedback, let me know. I guess judging ends soon, but I'm always happy to give feedback whenever.
