I really like the graphics and audio. The game is interesting, because it isn't something you have seen again and again. The controls could be a bit smoother (not pressing multiple times z to collect an item). Good job!

I like the idea, its simple and works well with the theme. Also the graphics are good and consistent. It is as much fun as you can put into so short gameplay. I enjoyed your game. Good job :)

Cool short game, I almost got everything out on my second try. Music and graphics are nice and I didn't encounter any bugs, you did a good job!

This game reminds me of 60 seconds (in a good way). Really like the graphics and music. It's makes it look fun and you get a feeling of urgency with the music. It's a bit short to get fully into and I did have plenty of time to gather everything, so i didn't feel like I had to make any difficult sacrifices. But other then that, great job :)

Found all sentiments but missed 2 items. I guess I did what the lady asked for didn't I? :)
It's fun exploration game although I wish the movement was a bit faster.

Excellent theme choice, sacrifice of sentimental value. Controls needs a bit tuning.

@meursault thanks for the great review! I agree the controls are not the smoothest, it was tricky to get a balance between people reading the text or having to wait around. Thanks again!

A small, simple, and very polished game. The music really sets the mood: urgent, without time to lose! It also fits the theme very well. The art is neat.

Overall it's a very solid and robust game, I like it.

Hello there, congrats for the entry, compo is maddening and you've made a pretty good job!

What I liked the most: the track and the way the flames get more intense as time goes by. I really felt like 'I gotta get out of here asap' and I wasn't even looking at the temperature! Also, I enjoyed that there were paths that you simply had to pass through the flames. Graphics looked good and I had no bugs whatsoever.

What I disliked the most: I felt like the inventory popping up everytime was unnecessary and got in the way of the gameplay itself. Also, I think that one easy thing to make the controls better is if you move faster between the grid cells. The transition is just too slow, in my opinion.

Cheers!

Haha, so it turns out I made the right choice not being a fireman! :D Very good sense of urgency with the music and visuals. At first was a bit confused about not being able to move vertically, but soon realised how the movement mechanic operated. Great job here.

As everyone said, the movements was a little bit awkward, but the concept fits the theme so well and it's very original! The 1 minute timer was a great idea in my opinion. Good job on this one!

That was fun and enjoyable. The bindings are not optimal for a french azerty keyboard but I managed :D Nice music and retro vibe.

Cool, even if it took me a bounce of seconds before understanding how the movement was working :)

I died on my first playthrough because I got to the door, then turned around to go pick up a penny. Good job dev, you beat me.

This is a nice little game. I enjoyed the mounting sense of panic as the fire spread and took away my path. I was a bit confused at one point when I had to step on a tile that wasn't fully on screen in order to proceed.

Very fast gameplay, and repeatable for search every item in the house.
The first time i was trying to get all items and I died between the flames for not looking at the temperature. Very cool, and with a lovely retro style.

Fast gameplay. Easy but interesting concept. Art is retro and i like it. Movement is a bit slow but it's not an important issue

Simple and to the point. I liked the short playtime and the music really set the frantic mood.

For feedback, I would recommend adding some sound effects. Burning for when you are touching fire, maybe some crashes when the fire spreads. Even a simple ding when you pick something up would be good.

I would echo what others have said and not require multiple presses for picking up items and then closing the window. A simple timer that closes the the picked up item window would be fine. The inventory button could just open up the inventory window for a second or two since you really don't need it anyway.

Overall well done. I liked how casual all the other firemen are just standing around the burning house not caring at all

Great game!
It's the second one I've this with this premice, but I really like it!
It'd be great if there could be a list of the items you didn't manage to save at the end, so you get a feeling of the sacrifices that have been made!
Well done!

@minibobbo Thanks so much for the thorough review! I agree that some sound effects would've added something extra, and I was totally aware of how clunky and slow the control scheme can feel at times, I agree with all of the feedback, and appreciate you taking the time to write it up!

@justalocalhero the penny was there to straight away teach people what kind of things to not bother picking up, to fall for grabbing it on the way out again is extremely unlucky! Thanks for the review and feedback!

Nice little entry, overall the graphics are nice for a PICO-8 game. They have an old Paperboy feel, I think. The navigation was a bit awkward because in some rooms you can go outside the screen at the far top right and you don’t really know what is happening there.

I got 6/6 and 8/10 but I don’t really know what I missed. Well, at least I got the important items :-) As mentioned above, maybe having a list of the rescued objects could be nice? I suppose the two unimportant objects I rescued were the burnt food and the medicine, but I don’t remember the others… two picture frames I think, the fridge magnets, the antique radio…

The graphics and music are great! I had some trouble with the controls though, as I got stuck in a few places and had trouble picking up items. It seemed like the check for whether you make it outside is a little aggressive:

I really enjoyed this. It was nice and fast to play, and the music was great. The particle effects were great at adding a sense of urgency. I wish there were more levels!

@samh one of the items that I really hid was a pile of cash under the bed :), and possibly you missed the penny by the front door? Either way you got all of the important items which is the primary challenge so well done! Thanks for playing/reviewing!

the grid gameplay is quite good, overall enjoyable game.
i think it would be really good to have a visual feedback when you pick up stuff, the opening inventory is a bit confusing at first.
good one :^)

Very nice little game, I especially love the music and the fact that you don't have to save any people inside, so I don't feel so guilty when I can't save everything :)

Hey Awesome game! I really like the isometriclike movement. It's inspiring.
I think it's a little annoying having to wait for the hud animations, but other than that I think is a really unique take on the theme.
Congrats on the entry!

Perfect take on the theme, I think most of us have played the (hopefully theoretical) game of which possessions they'd save in a fire. The grid movement was a bit awkward at first, but I love the isometric view so much it was a small hurdle to get over. I would have liked more rooms and items (necessitating more choices and risk/reward) but I enjoyed this as a short and sweet experience all the same!
