Baggage Claim by mgoadric

[raw]
made by mgoadric for LD 42 (JAM)

Clear out the baggage from the carousel before you run out of space!

You have 5 seconds from when a bag arrives to move it onto the carousels. If the bag is still left at the spawn point in the center after 5 seconds, the game is over.

Click on the highlighted shapes to move the bag. The spaces on the first carousel can hold anything, but the second and third need to match the shape.

Score points by unloading the bags to the waiting passengers at the bottom of the screen.

See my Post-Mortem post for more development details.

I'm happy with this initial prototype of the mechanics, but I think the timing and speed needs some good balancing, would be very interested to hear in the comments what kind of scores you can achieve.

Very interesting idea, looks good and sounds are good. Might need some balance tweaking (I have no idea for what I get time and for what I don't get time)

A fun game. I think you did a good job with both the mechanics and the aesthetics (nice choice of icons and sounds). I found it interestingly difficult to plan ahead by getting luggage off the outer rings, while being careful not to neglect the center. The only bug I noticed is that the score remains at zero.

Wow! This is a really fun and challenging game.
I think It is kinda difficult since the beginning, I would suggest starting easy and ramping up the difficulty over time.
The graphics seemed a bit pixelated (maybe you forgot to check the import settings in Unity?).
The sounds are okay I guess... they kinda get really repetitive, and the clock sound is really annoying!
Overall I think it is a very good game, and with a little of improvements it could do really well.

Thoughts, ideas, hints and stuff:
- Game Idea is pretty unique.
- I think the limitation to move the new bag within 5 seconds is a bit harsh maybe there is a better way as a lose condition?
- The graphics are alright
- I see some potential here with a bit of polish. This could be a fun puzzle game.

Good entry.

Great execution of an original idea! The game is very tight and focused. I wasn't sure how much room there was for strategy, though: I ended up just waiting as long as possible to get each next bag, because that way I minimize the total number on the screen, and then just have fast reflexes for all the other possible transition opportunities. This game is simple enough that it seems like one should be able to come up with a provably optimal strategy, hmm... Or maybe it's less about that and more just about the reflexes. In any case, I quite liked it!

This was a great entry and I like how it ties into the theme really well. Everything is very well made. I think some of the sounds were a little loud and got old after a while of playing. As stated above the 5 seconds was a little tight, but it kept the pace up and the pressure on!

@gamebuilder Thank you very much for the feedback! Sorry the score didn't change for you when you got luggage off the whole carousel, what OS and browser were you using?

@ijzm Yes, the carousel background was a last-minute add of Unity 3D capsules, look quite pixelated. Thanks for the feedback!

@don-fouts @wasd I agree the 5 second time limit is tough for starting, but I've managed to get up to a score of 10, and have seen even higher, up to 32, when I let the computer make the moves instantaneously for the outer rings. I agree, @sam-estep , it is more about the reflexes right now, but if I made the timer longer, this might make space to add some strategic elements in the outer rings. Thanks for all the feedback!

Fun game, very stressful! I found myself on the edge of my seat while playing. I agree that it's pretty hard and it seems strange that you can only move stuff out from the center to the bottom of the first carousel, rather than to any side. Overall, it's an innovative and fun game for sure. Could make for an addictive mobile game, and since it's fast paced it'd be great to play when standing in line or waiting for something.

This was great! concept was great and worked really well with theme. The game got progessively more difficult as time went on but not too slow/fast. Only thing i would say is the sounds were a bit piercing and irritating.

Wow this game is pretty hard. I like it. Focuses both on space management and multi-tasking. Good job!

I played the game again and noticed the score _does_ work, it increments just when you said it would. Probably I didn't get far enough in most of my earlier games and I misunderstood the score of zero as being a bug. My apologies.

@rob-parker I agree about the sounds, the generated files from bfxr can be very raw, I will look into ways to smooth them out. Thanks for the feedback!

@gamebuilder no worries! I was excited when I finally scored above zero when I was testing it!

I liked it! A universally relatable experience and it's pretty well executed. A nightmare on touchpad, but it's my own fault for trying to find mac- and touchpad-friendly games here, haha. I think the clicks also didn't register sometimes, but I'm not sure. Overall good job!

It's strangely addictive! If only picking up my bags at the airport was as intesting and bags being as easily distinguishable!

Great take on the theme! The 5 seconds limit can be a bit stressful and some of the sound effects may eventually become grating, but overall everything works together nicely. The first time you manage to take a suitcase to a matching passenger feels wonderfully!

Good job! :D

this was a great game that worked with the theme very well - this could really be a nice mobile game - thanks for making it

Theme fit pretty well but it felt kinda unfair, maybe 5 seconds is too short or I want more visual feedback, I cant tell. As far as my experience with the game, It is kinda boring, at least for me. I found myself not paying attention to the shapes and getting ready to match them, just clicking where I saw something light up. When i lost it felt pretty cheesy since there was nothing I could do but wait for my eventually defeat since I didnt move a bag earlier. Maybe an ability to speed up a certain carousel would make that better.

@jack-maxwell Thanks very much for the constructive criticism! I was hoping to do more to make the shape matching meaningful, but it turned into a speed game in development. It is definitely lacking larger strategic decisions right now, I hope to fold them into the next iteration.

I like it a lot. It is challenging and as visitor of many airports I can relate to it. :D

Very original idea! Perhaps you should have a stack of incoming objects with a maximum height instead of a 5-second limit for each individual object. As is, it pays off to leave each object waiting for as long as possible. Also, there seems only limited opportunity for strategy, and I found the most successful strategy is simply to click on any link that lights up.

Can't think of much to criticize this for. It's simple and it works, but maybe some good music would be beneficial.

Gook take on the theme! After a few rounds got a whole score of... 6. Got all stars on my first round and was a bit confused lol.

Nice game! I enjoyed playing. It took me a try to see where I actually scored the 2 points that I got. I mainly just clicked whatever arrow was available, only a few times I planned ahead. I played a few times and steadily increased my score, till I got 13. I often waited as long as possible with the new bag, to move the other bags around. (Then sometimes I thought I was just in time, but the click wasn't registered?). Sometimes I wished that the bag would just automatically drop at the empty slot. ;)
