Don't Pet The Alien! by JohnnyR

main_menu.png

After discovering a bunch of cute little creatures on your farm, you find yourself in a terrible situation.

A glowing meteor has fallen into the farm's fields, bringing along an unknown terror, who seeks the blood of said creatures. However, this unseen terror has killed one of the creatures and taken its form, so you don't know which one of them is the evil one. Now it is up to you to take care of them and keep their hunter far away!

INFORMATION:

This project was an attempt to make a "Virtual Pet + Horror" game. The Horror part was not like we wanted it to be, but due to the time running out, we had to make some changes to the game's mechanics.

Some stuff was also not correctly implemented, such as the cleaning and sanity mechanics. Also, right now there's no way to identify the correct disguised alien... However, those will be addressed soon!

However, the game will be updated over its Itch.io page. So check the links below to stay tuned, as we'll have updates soon!

INSTRUCTIONS:

Tap the creatures to see their Hunger / Cleanliness / Sanity status. Clicking one of these will open a menu bar with some items that you can use to feed them.

You can also kill them, by using the knife. Do that in order to kill the correct disguised alien!

I really liked how the audio combined some elements of the fun of a pet simulator, and the creepiness of a horror game. All the little sprites were really cute! I look forward to seeing updates where it's possible to better tell which one is the bad one, because now it's just stabbing willy nilly and it makes me feel guilty

@tg1397 Thanks for the feedback! It's much appreciated!
As for the stabbing thing, well... Yeah, we are aware of the bugs, and we'll update it as soon as possible to make everyone feel as less guilty as possible! Hahahaha

I love this idea. The juxtaposition between the creepy music and cute pets is great, and I bet it'll be even better once you update it. What was your plan for identifying the alien?

Fun idea, I really see how it could become a very cool game but right now there is not very much gameplay. Great music and sound effects too.

@lewis-quaife Thank you!

@dovakla Thanks for the feedback! And yes, so far there's not much to do other than killing the pets and preventing them to starve.

Our initial plan was to give tips every night on who is the Alien. There would also be random events, in which the pets' sanity would be lowered, or some of them would even die. So you'd be worried every day/turn about having them all clean/fed and sane before the night came. And that's about it. We're planning on updating it soon, as there's many things that weren't implemented on time. Check our [Itch.io Page](https://johnnyr-san.itch.io/dont-pet-the-alien) to see the Devlog. Any updates will be posted there!

@linus Thank you! And yes, like I said before, we didn't have enough time to implement everything we wanted to, so basically we tried our best! Hahaha

@pietro-ferrantelli Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!

Interesting idea, a shame you didn't get to adding in the main mechanic for it. Obviously time is a big constraint, so maybe next time it'd be good to prioritise getting a basic game loop up over some of the graphics and sound effects? You probably could have left out having different rooms too until later.

I also had some UI bugs on my device, the settings didn't seem to properly go away, they just hovered in front of the arrow keys haha

Good luck for future Ludum Dares!
