Monkey Beat by Zangold

[raw]
made by Zangold for LD 42 (JAM)

Monkey Beat is a one-button rhythm game heavily inspired by PaRappa the Rapper. In this game you will face charming characters in rap battles. unknown.png For you to sing, you must hit the Space button when the notes of the music come over the vinyl disk. But be careful, miss too much notes and the crowd will get really mad!

Nice one, art a pretty cool and humor take a big part. Simple and nice. Unfortunatly a lil buggy menu while in game (can't click with mouse). But nothing that disturb the good UX ! Keep it up !

Awesome, I really enjoyed this! The music was really well done so bravo. It was a little difficult (or maybe I just have no rhythm) but it was really fun.

Man, that's some great beats and flow you got there ! Aside from the great music part, I love the really polished graphics, as well as the immediately enjoyable gameplay. When I started playing the game, I did so on your old (and difficult) build, but the new one is already better. A little more visual feedback (sound/light) would help a lot I think. All in all, great job !

- Need to follow the theme ( I know but still NO EXCUSES!!!! JUST DO IT, IT WILL MAKE YOU BETTER)
- Increase feedback of when i am successful
- Consider removing the need to be on beat in order to HEAR the words, intead the user needs to hit the valid area passing in order to get points, increase points the more accurate it is to beat.
- If you wanted to fix something to be more to theme, have the valid zone to hit be larger and over time or as levels get harder decrease their size.
-- Maybe the area on the field shrinks as I fail hits, and remove your health bar.

The art is pretty simple but very charming. Music is 5-stars from me.

The gameplay is a bit too simple being one-button game but still surprisingly hard. If I understand how it works correctly, the crowd gets mad if you miss the beat or press space when there is no beat, which is a bit unfair in my opinion, because then the crowd gets closer 2 times when you press the space at the wrong time on one note. It ecncouarages the player to not even try to hit space if they are not sure if they are going to hit the note just to be safe. Other than that the game was really nice! Would like to see where it goes in the future

The notes are going way too fast imo. For this kind of game if you want to help us get into a rhythm you need to keep it simple and build up slowly, rather than using words I don't even know that are 3 syllables long, sung super fast at the very start of the game. If you are going to have the notes go by this fast then you need to add a little room for error (think crypt of the necrodancer) where there is a brief before and after period where even if you miss the beat a little it still counts if you are roughly in time.

The art is really nice though and if the mechanics weren't such a struggle for me it would be a pretty good cute little game.

Pretty vague on the theme but it's not really the best theme as far as creativity goes to be fair

It was pretty tough, and I think feedback when hitting notes could be better. Even when I hit a note it wasn't very satisfying, which is a big thing for rhythm games in my opinion.

I don't think this had anything to do with the theme, which is too bad.

When I lost, I expected the audience to really tear into me, since it said they would get really mad :P

The art style was cute, and the UI was simple and clean

Rythme game is really not my jam ( i'm sooo bad at it) but still it was fun because of the graphics and the funny rap songs.

It's pretty difficult, but it's interesting, the theme is a little vague but it's understandable xD
Good music and art
