The Adventures of Bileous by LyghtningWither

[raw]
made by LyghtningWither for LD 44 (COMPO)

The Robo-Lizards have taken over Crankville! Smashing shops, building huts, everything being in chaos. Meanwhile, young adult Bileous isn't worrying about the Robo-Lizards. He's just living a life in exalted solitude, trying to be outside as little as possible, as if he's outside, then he's more likely to get a scar or two than get a small sunburn in summer. You see, Bileous is a social outcast. He messed up a VERY important meeting on accident, and that lowered his social currency into the negative thousands. So, there goes any chance AT ALL to be said "Hi" to or to be given anything more than dirt on his birthday.

But then, the Robo-Lizards put everyone in jail, except Bileous! (he's very protected from everything - even dust particles are eliminated from his house!!!) And then, Bileous knew how to win everybody's hearts. How to bring his social currency to the positives. He would have to... defeat the Robo-Lizards!!!

Unfortunately for Bileous, he couldn't by any protection because 1. everybody was imprisoned and 2. even if the armorer wasn't imprisoned, he couldn't buy anything from anybody in Crankville. So, he had to risk his life to do this - therefore, his life (whether he lived or not) was his social currency.

To blow up the control/production center for the robots, Bileous has to get five things: a key, a switch, a hijacker, a computer, and a wrench. They are scattered all around a map covered with Robo-Lizards - which are kind of hard to evade. But it will be worth it... if you can actually survive. Good luck, Bileous! :) Also, Robo-Huts spawn infinite numbers of Robo-Lizards. Fortunately for Bileous, if there are too many Robo-Lizards at once, then the system crashes and therefore some of the Robo-Lizards have to self-destruct to stabilize the system.

Nice, simple game. The particle effects are a nice touch.

Fantastic story and nice ending sequence. There was also a really epic last battle with a door a bit late to open ( this extra time after 100% actually made me scream ). I had to use a joytokey program because wasd is unplayable on french keyboards.

Nice storytelling! My only regret is that the art is bad, I don't want to be mean but it has to be said. However, it doesn't prevent your game for being cool to play and fun, and that's a great point!

First of all, I have nothing bad to say about MsPaint graphics even though I personally enjoy hand drawn MsPain art more than the too symmetrical geometric shapes. But the color selection of just using bright pure colors hurts my eyes and soul. I'm no artist myself but I can wholeheartedly recommend using a tool like https://coolors.co/ to generate a palette of just a few colors that look nice together. I use it on almost every game jam!

Then to the gameplay. The enemy spawning was cheap and didn't give any warning resulting of many unavoidable damages taken. The AI was quite relentless if you happened to corner yourself but on the other hand it was dumb enough to be exploited by getting them stuck on the buildings.

The hitboxes were not very obvious and were too large. It would have made more sense if the character colliders was like this:

...since it's kinda mimicking isometric view anyway. And the hitboxes for damaging the player should always be way way smaller than the sprite itself to make it seem not unfair.

Made it through on my second try! First time I would have probably made it too but I seemed to miss the weight item.

Didn't really see or understand the use for all the items either. Were they all even necessary?

Anyways, good job!

@antti-haavikko The graphics were drawn with Inkscape, by the way. Not Paint. Sorry for the weird colliders. I was kind of stuck between isometric and top-down, and I was frantic to get the gameplay down and I had little time. The items are necessary because you need them to start the :30 second end-game challenge, by the way.

@saering Sorry for the bad graphics. It's just my style of art. Thanks for the feedback, though!

Good work completing the game! It was fun and not a bad game at all for your first entry! I think having a second instrument in the music might have helped it from getting repetitive. With some more animations I think it would have felt a bit nicer to play! Great work, keep it up!

Thank you for this game :D It really took me back to my childhood when I played Adventure on the Atari for the first time. Yes, I am that old :( Great game design. I couldn't stop until beating the game. And when the timer was done and I still had to wait for the door to open, I kinda panicked (~_~)\ Good music too. Nice job!

Fun game, a little bit challenging to be honest, but once you understand how it works it is not so difficult
