Crustal by Coffee Bland

[raw]
made by Coffee Bland for LD 38 (JAM)

Coffee Bland's latest batch:

The last bastion of hope for this small world.

It must be protected at all costs! Alas, hordes of musterds creep in the shadows...

Follow franctically behind the Crustal as it wobbles along, and try to survive as long as possible. Move with arrow keys and shoot with wasd.

The game's written in Lua, running on Löve. You can install it and run love on the .love file. If you're on Windows, download the corresponding zip file and unzip, there is an executable in it. If you're on OSX, download the corresponding zip file and it contains a .app (you'll have to let your computer run it since it's not registered).

While overall the idea and execution is pretty tame, we're very happy overall with what we've managed (considering we weren't able to work on it the whole weekend, and barely on monday).

This was a good one!

Congrats on your game.

The only thing missing is some great music and SFX... would love to make some one day

Good game, great graphics. I personally would prefer to move with the keyboard and shoot with the mouse. Also not sure about the connection with the theme...

This game looks fantastic and really fun to play.

I really like your take on the theme with the small area of space, and you have to fight through the horde of musterds. Definitely created a lot of challenges. I just wish that there were some music and sound effect to make the game feel more full.

Overall, great entry!

Very challenging, although it seemed like the game might have been running too fast? Not sure if that's intentional. I played the windows executable. After watching the gameplay video, I think it might be a bug. Still, I kind of liked it, it was a bit like Devil Daggers. Also, I figured out that you can just mash all the WASD keys and shoot rapidly in all directions, which was pretty fun.

I really liked the art. Even with such a small number of assets, the animations and colors had a really cool feel. And the effects were amazing, I loved the beams and the tiny green area within the purple wasteland.

I agree with the other comments that some sounds would have made it even better. The art was already so weird and evocative that I found myself wondering what kinds of sounds these strange crystal beings would make as they walked around.

Interesting control scheme and the graphics are done well, but wow does that get difficult fast!

Good graphics, and good gameplay. The difficulty level does ramp up very quickly, though!

Nice graphics, too bad there isn't sounds :(. I think using the mouse to aim and fire would be better than using wasd. My best score is 94.

@blushine: as far as I'm aware the speed is what it was intended to be; I've tested both the windows version on wine and on my windows 10 and it worked fine for both.

Overall indeed it was very much a shame we couldn't get sound in, there is a post-ludum version in the works however...

@yoanndeplo: Agreed, it would've benefited the game to support both controllers, mouse aim and the keyboard and that's among the additions of the post-ludum version.

Lovely concept, good execution

I'd have liked some more explanation; it's *there*, but it's so small people can easily ignore it, and the blue boxes only give a 'press space to release wave' *during gameplay*. You could file that last bit under 'well its fun to have some mysteries', but I'm very tired from work right now, and it took me quite a while until I read that you should use WASD to shoot

The game is fun and the graphics are nothing short of astonishing!

However, as said before, the lack of audio is almost audible :P

Recording sounds or using bfxr could really make the game better without investing too much time.
