One More Arm by MaximBegunov

[raw]
made by MaximBegunov for LD 41 (JAM)

So I've decided to combine a slot machine and an arcade platformer and the result is here. The whole game takes place on one screen and changes between classic one-armed-bandit and an arcade plaformer which are connected with each other.

Pull the lever and fight off the enemies!

The controls are shown in the game, use Escape to exit.

A, D - move

Space - fly

Mouse and LMB - aim and shoot

Right now there is no set goal, so you just play for highest score or until you are bored.

I hope you have some fun with it.

Clever idea!

Solid game! I enjoyed this one. One suggestion would be some kind of indication that shooting the enemies is doing anything to them, I wasn't sure at first what I was supposed to be doing. Once I figured it out I had a good time. My first boss wave jackpot thingy was a big surprise but was great fun. Love the idea of generating enemy waves with a slot machine, and the consistent style made it really cool.

This is a really fun game! The physics of flying all over the place is well implemented and the shooting feels great. The presentation is also top notch; you really nailed the look of a slot machine. I particularly like the thick, black outlines everything has. It does get repetitive after a while, but I had a blast while it lasted. Great work!

That's a great idea! And it's working perfectly. I can think of anything bad to say. It's simple, but a lot of fun. Thank you!

Loved it! One of the most creative game combinations I've seen so far. Sound effects, music and graphics are all really solid, and the gameplay was fun.
I'd appreciate it if you could rate and review my game too. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/dunk-four

@aevek Thanks for your feedback! At first every enemy was supposed to be one-hit but then the "mini-bosses" would become quite pointless if you could one-shot them and overall the game was too easy. So then I was thinking about adding health bars to the enemies but they filled too much space. I guess I could've used alpha channel of the whole sprite to show health but yea, it is one problem of my game.

I like it! The flying mechanic feels a bit awkward, but other than that the game plays well. Maybe incorporate the arm a bit more, as currently it serves more as a play button. Also, the sounds were a bit jarring at first. I like that there can be a wide variety of enemy types.

Really interesting mash-up you came with. The slot machine effects are so nice.
A little bit hard and repetitive when you die so many times but fun :)
Well done.

Nice game idea you got there ! It's working really fine and it's fun to play. And it's easy to play, hard to master as they say.

Love how the different symbols have different mechanics. The art style fit very well and was very consistent and flying felt really fun!

That was fun! I at first thought for sure the bottom row was unbeatable, but once I learned I could stay airborne, it was game on! lol The sound effects/music fit perfectly, and the graphics were really nice pixel art.

On one run, I lost two of my three lives in the first 15 seconds or so, but survived three more rounds with my last dude. 7s are jerks, hunting me down like that.

On specific detail I want to comment on, in particular, was the telegraphing of attacks. Being able to see and anticipate the attacks made the game really playable without feeling hand-holdy.

This game is great and the idea is really creative. One of my favourite games of this Jam for sure.

The theme of this game is a lot of fun! The music, sound, and graphics are all really satisfying, and I was surprised to score a row of 7s on my third play - though it seems more traditionally "valuable" symbols don't pay more points?

I had the same experience as Budaniel where I would die really quickly to the bottom row until I learned the 'jump' was really a 'jetpack'!

@sayumeki @budaniel Thanks for the feedback and remarks about the controls. I guess it's my fault for not describing them properly. I was trying to make it intuitive so when the character flies there is some kind of fire coming from his legs, thought it would give a hint that the player can fly besides just jumping. I suppose I just overthought it too much, heh

This is a good idea. It is fun to play.
Sounds and music, as the whole presentation make it complete.
Good job.

I think I will keep it on my desktop and show it to some friends. That may motivate them to participate to some next jams.

I like the graphical style a lot! And a lot of potential for a cool little mini-game.

For possible future improvements, if you're so inclined, I would add "valuable symbol combinations" spawn special encounters (bosses, if you will) with higher score payout to deeper integrate the slotmachine into the game, and more symbols overall. As fun as it is to play, variety is it's greatest weakness as of now.

I mean, it's already quite a solid piece overall. Very well done!

This overall a very well made game. The idea, music and graphics is really good, and it fits well tougher. I would have liked some kind of "Game Over"-screen that clearly shows when one game ends and a new one starts. But overall a very well made game. Well done.

Nice idea, although I was not able to pass through 3rd "wave". First and second "waves" attack player from above, but the third wave targets spawn literally on the player and there is no much chance to avoid them and shoot down from a distance.

There are many ways to improve the gameplay by say putting more links between the gamemodes: shooting / not shooting certain targets in arcade mode gives more chances for spawning / not spawning that targets in the slot mode...

And/or spending points earned in slot mode for upgrades in arcade mode...

Anyway, well done!

Thank you! Some people told me that it was unclear that they could fly. Yeah, I needed to put more info about how the mechanics work inside the game.

I almost stopped playing, when thee images in one row did not do anything, but I proceeded with the round and boy I was happy when a saw my first big lemon. The game is incredibly enjoyable and fun, I do not regret a second spent playing it.

A nice idea and well executed. I like the graphics and the style of the game. I think there is a lot of potential for more cool features if you continue with this after the Jam.

This game is actually quite addictive once you get the hang of the controls. I would have liked a "game over" screen but other than that it's really cool. Keep up the good work!

This is a pretty fun game. The session loop works well, the graphics are solid, and the audio provides excellent feedback for what's going on. The enemies provide enough variation to keep the game interesting. The only thing I think can be improved is the end-game experience. There should probably be some game over/end-session display to the user instead of just the point score set to zero. Something like showing the total score in large characters, or a gameover screen or something.

Really addictive, fits the theme well, and looks great. Most notably the spin animation - it's not just cycling through the different sprites, it's very artistic. Likewise the sounds for the spin fit perfectly.

The gameplay is nice overall and I was very surprised when the giant "7" spawned.

One issue I noticed was the visibility of the lemons shots. A bit more variety among the enemies would also improve things a lot.

@gentel Thank you! Very surprised to hear good words about spin animation, I thought it was awful, heh.

About more variety among enemies, I actually had 1 more enemy with a finished mechanic in the game but even with just one more enemy chance of getting 3 in a row would decrease drastically (from ~20% to like ~4-5%). So I decided to leave it as it is or else people wouldn't even know there was something in the game if you got 3 in a row or spend their nerves and time praying to rng god to give them the combo.

Thank you again for the feedback!

This is pretty cool! It took me a bit to figure out that you could hold space to hover - that made dodging some things much easier. Good music, too! I haven't gotten lucky enough to get a triple yet, it'd be nice if the chances of the triple enemies was higher. Overall, pretty creative take on the theme!
