Harvest: The Farming - Red Owl Games by Rocktavious

[raw]
made by Rocktavious for LD 41 (JAM)

Hello All, Rocktavious of Red Owl Games - its finally over!

I'm really excited for how much i was able to get done this LD. I got much further then my LD40 entry and that makes me really proud. Like most everyone i was really upset at the theme, but after watching people come up with ideas i came around to the idea of combining a card game + farming sim (think sim farm of the 90s)

Harvest: The Farming

2018-04-23_21-55-39.gif

Is a deck building game where you manage a farm.

Given an initial deck of cards you manage a farm (sim farm style) Throughout play you can gain new cards, plants grow, and you try to protect against insects, weeds and weather(drought and flooding). Good luck!

TIPS: - Drag and Drop are the controls - Cards will recycle when used or discarded (certain cards will not) - You will gain new cards at different score levels (both positive and negative)

Things i didn't finish: - Art - there are still a few placeholder images i didn't have time to draw replacements for - Cards - There are only 13 unique cards in the game (can you find them all) - Start/Help Menus

Hope you all enjoy and I look forward to your feedback!!!!

That's quite an interesting approach. I liked it a lot, but it felt quite luck based (I ended up discarding tons of herbicide/pesticide...) And the boost cards(other then working hard) felt a bit redundant as you pay x to get y bonus. But I think with a bit more work this could be quite interesting, like maybe with a whole farm rather then just 3 fields or something. Great work :)

Pretty fun little game! I enjoyed the combine of the two genres a lot and I was surprised how addicting the simple concept could be. Obviously, the complaints I had would be that I would have wanted more cards but that's understandable with the time limit. Good job overall, a solid game!

Also, if you have time, check out my game and give it a rate and comment! It'd go a long way! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/seaman-sleuth

@Tay Thanks for playing - ya i too agree i needed more cards, but i just ran out of time. As for the randomness - the only thing that is random is the weather events on your fields (and only 1 is selected every 2 cards drawn with a ~30% of nothing happening) So really not much random. The cards are actually recycling - as you use them or discard them they cycle to the bottom of your deck - this is probably something i could have pointed out better in the initial tutorial.
@KappaJin Thanks for playing - ya i think more cards could really turn this into a more polished experience.
@Velocity7 Thanks!!

I was a bit confused on the first try, but then I got the game idea. The idea is good, playing I imagined the game with the graphics similar to harvest moon and I think it would look very good. but I missed the mechanics of rewards and defeat. Also, The "work harder" card is a lot of fun, I laughed a lot.
Good job!!

@isaaclopinho Ya i wish i had time to make an intro/help menu - but i tried to keep the initial setup simple with just a 2 cards and slowly add more and more to your deck as you play/achieve score. I'm not an artist so i would love to have had better graphics (maybe something i'll work on for the next LD) Thanks for playing!!

It took a little bit to get the hang of this, but I can certainly tell that a pretty good amount of thought went into this title. I enjoyed it altogether! Your card concepts are diverse enough to be clearly impactful.

It bring me back to the time when I used to play Simfarm, I really liked how you added this to a card game. The time to receive new cards is very nice too
The graphics are very simples but It do what it have to do :D

Took me a minute to get it, but I got it! I started loosing track of time. Watching something go from "this is costing me money to do this" to "I'm making a profit!" is honestly a really good feeling. I just wish I could tell if there was an ending.

@megamasterx Thanks! I didn't get to spend as much time making the cards and interactions as much as i wanted and if people seem interested i'll probably keep developing the game after LD in which i'll add a ton more cards and progression things.
@haharo Ya simfarm was my insperiation (i love that game) I do wish i had more art skill / time to work on art, maybe something i'll revamp if i continue working post LD.
@joltjab HAHA, ya a few of my co-workers have said they lost track of time too - makes me feel like there is a solid game concept here that i might continue to work on post LD to really polish something up. There is not actual ending - but the new cards stop coming after a score of +250

Had a lot of fun with this. Would love to see an expanded version of it. Game bugged out on me when I tried to use a tractor card, but I'd already played for quite a while, so no huge disappointment there.

@Yirggzmb Wow you did play for a while!!! the tractor card is the 2nd to last card i made, so i didn't get to test it because i had to make some game logic changes near the publish hour. I'll see if i can go in and test/fix it this weekend. Thanks!!!

A pretty good game! Took a bit of getting used to, but eventually settled into a nice rhythm. Plant a seed, count how much it cost to upkeep, and just make sure you harvest at a net profit. Having irrigation counter drought was pretty cool, but I couldn't figure out how to counter drowning, or that... other affliction. I don't know what that is, looks like a little green sperm or something. None of my cards at that time could remove that debuff.

Either way, not a bad entry at all! Well done!

@justinooncx - Flooding is incurable - the strategy i planned for that is just harvest as soon as possible ;)
The little green guy is pests (i took my field afflictions straight from sim farm) - in the beginning you should have gotten it after you did your first spray fertilizer - if not something got bugged and i'll try to look into why. Thanks for playing!!!

It took me a moment to understand everything, but after that I enjoyed it. It's simple, but addicting. I did experience a couple bugs though. If I unlocked multiple things at once the words at the top of the screen were all piled on top of each other, and the tractor card glitched when I tried to look at it and I couldn't pick it up to see what it does. Other than that, I had fun playing it and I'm curious to see where it could go if developed further.

I quite enjoyed playing this game. Staying in the positive was difficult sometimes, although I did manage to find most of the cards. Awesome stuff!

An interesting take on farm simulation—we considered mixing in a card game as well.

Two downside though: The music was annoying really fast and the pictures didn't quite blend in.

Also I'd like to thank you for playing our game and leaving such positive feedback!

Liked the idea here! I can see this becoming a really interesting game to play.
For the downsides I pretty much agree with the previous comments so I shall not repeat them.
Well done! Keep up the great work!
