Zero Volt X by deepnight
Manage your ship power distribution while avoiding thousands of bullets!

Once again, this game is actually the second one I made during a single gamejam weekend. I cancelled the first one because it wasn't fun at all, so I decided to switch to a shooter with a fast paced gameplay like old-school ones :)
Important note: even though I'm participating on Jam and not compo, this entry was still created alone and within 48h. I only decided to switch to 72h Jam because of the cancelled first concept :|
Experimental HTML5 (chrome only, not recommended)
HOW TO PLAY
Distribute your generator power to your ship sub-systems. Max out the Shield (A) to regen it when you get hit, max out Gun (W) to increase damage in front of you and max out Missiles (D) to throw dozens of homing missiles around you!
CONTROLS
- ARROWS: move
- WASD: distribute power to your ship systems (W--Shield regen, W--Gun, D--Missiles and S--Reset all)
- R: go back to last checkpoint
- SHIFT-R: restart the game
- ESCAPE: quit
- M: toggle music
- S: toggle sfx

What happened to the first prototype idea?
Enjoyed the gameplay, and visual details are amazing!
First time enemy bullets appeared as pills to me (like powerup loot dropped), and I picked them up :( Also I'd appreciate more variated music than just the drums!
__ + __ The zip file named after the game, first one I test I could find easily in my download folder.
__ + __ A different genre from you usual entries, that's a spirit I like !
__ + __ A vertical shooter calibrated for casual players that don't require the player to memorize all the level patterns.
__ + __ Art, Mood.
** What imo could be improved **
__ - __ The game feel predictable and would benefit some unusual or surprising elements.
__ - __ Is the lack of sounds on html5 target a heaps limitation or a lack of time to implement it ?
__ - __ Source code not available :(
** Overall **
You know how to make games, right ? The design details makes the game feel very right and it's pleasant to play. Thanks for the game !
Mechanics are clever, and your game is very polish.
The music is a little bit of a let down, but I grew up with games in this genre like Battle Squadron and Hybris, so I subjectively always expect an amazing soundtrack to go with them. Objectively, the soundtrack is a little plain, but quite passable. The sound effects are quite good.
The balancing power mechanic is clever (reminded me a little of balancing my power in Elite Dangerous) and the game's been designed in such a way that each setting is applicable throughout the game.
Definitely one of my favourites of Ludum Dare 39.
I liked the smart mechanism of balancing your power between modules of our ship, and it works great because weapons are balanced (rockets are really useful when you can't be in front of enemy, but laser deals more damage). The sound is a bit off but no that important in this kind of game.
The game is hard but not enough to be frustrated! Too bad you had no time to make a final boss :p
When I died, I lost all my score, is it normal?
A very polished game, I just want more!
Hope you have time to followup and make a boss for this! I feel like this could be a pretty great full game!
