Moving Out! by 2bam

[raw]
made by 2bam for LD 42 (COMPO)

The game

You're about to move out of your home, but the economy is in shambles making you move to smaller and smaller places. Everything you leave in your former home will be sold, and everything you take with you, you'll keep. But fashion changes and so does pricing!

Try to hoard everything you think will be more valuable later, and sell the rest.

Beware of leaving things outside for too long, or the ratmen will take them.

Controllers

Works with joysticks (stick + button) or keyboard (arrows + space). Can be played cooperatively with two joysticks (just press a button to join).

Dev note

There is no audio and the idea was to have more procedurally generated levels and price progress patterns, but I couldn't make. Also got no time for a lose state, so imagine you lose if you don't get enough $$$ when moving :P . This game was made in around 20 hours.

Software used

  • GraphicsGale for textures
  • Unity
  • Also Unity for model creation: quads, spheres, capsules and cubes FTW
  • GIMP to rush fix an alpha channel somewhere. Can't remember if finally used it or not.

Changelog

Had to fix a bug that was preventing the end scene from running, and player 2 couldn't progress the tutorial. Nothing outside the rules!

The control of the player is weird, it slips so much, maybe decelerate it more when the player release the move input would be great. Also, I think it should have a way to pick objects without moving towards it.

I like the fact that there are multiple mechanics. With the ratmen and value changes for the items. Also the fact that the game tracked current values was pretty cool. Good job!

Nice game, as Fritz said the movement is a bit slippery and the lack of a lose condition makes the game feel a bit shallow but what's here is good and works well!
Good entry overall, nice work!

@fritz @mieeh Yes, I agree the physics part is way off tune, I left it for last (as SFX) but never had the time. Fritz, please *explain me* your thought on picking objects without moving towards them, beacause I don't understand it (Thanks!)

@gettingrekt Thank you! I wanted to try a "predictable value changing" idea, it turns out it's pretty hard to communicate that to the player  , even more so in such a little amount of levels to actually start seeing a pattern.

@2bam Maybe add a rotation input to the player, for example in games that one joystick is used to move, and the other joystick is used to look around. But now, thinking a little bit more about it, maybe you could just move the hands to the direction of the input immediately, without tweening it, because when you are looking to one direction and press the input to the other direction very quickly, it turns around (like a clock-hand) but it doesn't stop to where the player wants.

Nice game, Love how everything is balanced!
Good luck, Don't forget to take a look at ours if you don't mind and see what it's like when we just focused on graphics in this game jam!
