DBK - A Band Story by Sebastian-M

[raw]
made by Sebastian-M for LD 43 (JAM)

The legendary band DBK

Everyone have heard their songs but few know the band's beginnings. Follow DBK in every step of the way to fame, including all the sacrifices they had to make.

Gameplay

DBK is a puzzle game with some twist. You need to help each member get to the rehearsal, picking up their instrument and the money they need first. Each member can interact with the objects of its color. 1.PNG 2.PNG

Controls

  • Move characters with WASD.
  • Change characters with Space or using the numpad (1-3).
  • Rotate the camera dragging with your mouse.
  • Interact with objects walking to them.

Music

I love making dynamic soundtracks, I have done it for every Ludum Dare I've made. this game is not exception, try to notice how the music changes as you play.

Notes

Sadly, the game only have 7 out of my planned 15 levels. But is fully playable and fun to do so. I might add more levels to it, if you check the source code you could see levels are represented by a json file, so it's quite easy to add more.

Puzzles are a little too simple for my taste, and I wish I could move a bit faster. Even so, this game really shines because of its style. The music is excellent - well done with the interactive soundtrack. In addition, the low-poly art style is executed quite well. I especially love the tile fall-down at the beginning.

A nice little puzzle game with an excellent presentation! The work on the UI, animations and overall atmosphere are really the strong point of the game (my only suggestion being to replace the solid blue background with something different, maybe a plain white or a light gradient).

The premise of telling the story of a band is a pretty cool choice with good potential! In the end I did feel the story lacked a little bit of character, but I've been guilty of the same thing under the pressure of jams. The level count however turned out pretty decent: the game takes 5-10mn to beat which is good for a jam, and enough to let us discover the gameplay possibilities.

Gameplay-wise the puzzles were not too hard but still enjoyable, and the couple issues I had seem easy enough to iron out. For instance I've been in a situation where Yellow was alone without enough money, waiting patiently for a dollar to spawn on his side. Just before it was too late, money finally popped, but as soon as I walked on it the tile dropped without warning :sob:

Anyway nice job, this is a top tier entry for me!

EDIT: Almost forgot to give some love to the dynamic tune

Definitely, best music award. It's the most superb part of the game. Also, advanced levels are really interesting too! The idea of changing characters is superb. The only drawback - I didn't see any sacrifices. :-)

One of kind! I really liked the changing music when an instrument was picked up. I would have liked to be able to skip text even before it has fully appeard on screen. It needs a little more polish, but well done !

Really cool that game has a dynamic soundtrack!
Downloading your source code to learn from it.
Congratulations on having a solid product and have my respect for being solo developer!

I like the interpretation of the theme - mainly the concept that the more people you have involved in something, the more difficult it is to actually meet to work on that thing. The puzzles were nice too, yeah a little simple. But also that's what I expect out of the first few puzzles of a game. Well done!

Very artistic entry β€” stylish graphics, amazing music and there's a story! The only thing I didn't get, is the relation to a theme. Probably, boxes [to be moved out] could also have some meaning, like stuff, that you should move away to actually succeed in your career… Anyways, there's definitely some potential in this game, great job!

Really nice music and cool that you use easing to improve the visuals! Interesting design. Purposefully placing the cash would feel better than how it is randomly spawning all over. Nice puzzle design.

Fun game with some nice puzzles. I would have liked if they were a tad more difficult, but still a fun game! Nice job!

Just a not on a bug I had: On level 2-2 the start-up screen did not go away, so I could not play it. I was on the WebGL build.
