Shape Destroyer: Ascension by Lumos

[raw]
made by Lumos for LD 41 (COMPO)

A city-builder/FPS.

Defend your colony from the malevolent Geometrics using guns and collect their materials, because God knows you don't have a lot of ammunition left on you. And don't leave the dome, because the planet isn't really habitable; and also don't let the Geometrics destroy your Skydome generator, otherwise it's the same thing as leaving the dome, really. The rather cubic dome.

CONTROLS

WASD, SHIFT, Space: Movement.

1, 2, 3, 4: Change weapons:

  • The Colony Manager is not a gun, but allows you to build and upgrade buildings;
  • The PDW fabricates its own ammunition, but it's low-powered and inaccurate;
  • The Coilgun is accurate and powerful, but consumes ammunition;
  • The Shotgun is devastating in CQC, but also consumes ammunition.

E: Interact with highlighted tiles (with the Colony Manager in hand)

R: Reload (consumes entire magazine).

K: Start next night.

What you need to know

You have a fixed amount of ammo mags at the start. You must build Military buildings to generate more on a daily basis. Otherwise you'll be at a disadvantage. Materials, on the other hand, are acquired by killing enemies and by building Industrial buildings.

Keep your power high enough. If you run out of power (and Cubics will drain your generator's power), you lose the game. You can upgrade the generator to increase your power output or its resilience (chance to ignore damage on hit).

You may only build on tiles adjacent to roads (non-diagonally; the grey tiles bordering your generator are roads by default), and may not build on tiles you're standing on. You're also forbidden from building during the night. Unfortunately, you may highlight tiles that you can't build on, so keep an eye out for roads.

Reloading consumes an entire magazine, so spend all of your shots before reloading the gun. Alternatively, stick to the PDW.

More powerful versions of enemies come in later days.

I like your game a ton! Its super fun to play. Good job on the enemies as they seem about right in difficulty. I enjoy the building elements as well. Great job on you entry.

Couldn't get building to work, even though tile was showing blue. Was only able to open menu on the power plant. Good work though in only 17 hours!

This was pretty cool! It took me a bit to figure out how to play but then I really liked the idea. I wish there was a way to get more ammunition, and sound effects. Nonetheless, well done!

@svdvorak: That's odd. Note that you must build on tiles adjacent to roads, and that you're not allowed to build on a tile you're standing on. The game does a terrible job of explaining that (I should really add that to the "what you need to know" section above). If building simply didn't work though... well, it should have. :(

@Lumos Maybe it's because I have a swedish keyboard layout or something. I've had issues with that before. Good thing it seems to work for everyone else though :)

Cool concept, well executed. It lacks music and sounds. And I hoped to see at least a door to my buildings ^^' Anyway, the game is quite cool, challenging but I think too slow though.

Cool overall game, keep coding :)

Cool game! But I really wish there was some visual feedback when you hit an enemy.

I had the same problem as @svdvorak. In my first run, tiles highlighted, but when I pressed E on them, nothing happened (made sure not to stand on them). I then started a new run, and now tiles wouldn't even highlight. Also when I started the night, there were no sounds anymore. Although I was able to kill the enemies. Would have loved to give this a chance, but unfortunately it's not playable for me. :/

The gameplay and concept are where your game shines, push it further and you have something insanely fun between your hands! Here are my balancing and gameplay nitpicks:
Movement speed is too slow, power is too expensive, base gun's ammo should regenerate when not active, industry is too weak for an upgrade (easily overshadowed by commercial, I want to be a tyrannical landlord and shoot guns! :japanese_goblin:

I simply could get the menu for building buildings to show up; all I could ever do is improve my core. The shooting isn't bad but also isn't great...with its regenerating ammo and fast fire rate, the starting gun is actually the best. I wish I could have seen the "other half" of this game.

Very nice concept, and very smooth gameplay! The AI of the enemies is very dumb, but it's understandable given the time of the jam. Congrats! :D
