Bullet Hell Typing by BlazeXenon

[raw]
made by BlazeXenon for LD 41 (JAM)

Description:

WARNING: This is probably going to be the most infuriating game you will play because it mixes the genres of a bullet hell, and a typing game. Your ship has fuel, and as the game progresses, your fuel decreases. This means that your ship lags behind your mouse cursor and no longer is at an acceptable accuracy to dodge the millions of bullets that all seemingly aim to swarm you.

So how do you get more fuel? By typing of course!

What's that? You need one hand on the mouse to dodge bullets? Well, I guess your just gonna need to get really good at typing with one hand and not looking at the keyboard! ;)

In all seriousness though, this game was a hilarious concept @PandaCult and I came up.

The goal is to get as many points as possible and beat your high score, you can choose different levels of difficulty, ~~and depending on if we have time, there might be an upgrade shop to make the experience easier.!~~ We ended up just adding a weapon power-up that spawns every so often!

( Note #1: The cover picture says the game is called Space Oddyssey, however the main menu and title of the game is called Bullet Hell Typing. This is because me and my friend couldn't agree on which title to use, so we ended up using both! c: )

Controls:

  • Move - Mouse
  • Shoot - Left Mouse Button
  • Bomb - Spacebar
  • Type Words - Keyboard
  • Pause - ESC

@kubi-entz Thanks man, I really appreciate the feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed our game! I have just published the (what looks to be) final bug fixes and the games plays pretty smoothly with all the weird bugs ironed out.

Also be warned, It's called Impossible Mode for a reason!

Thanks so much for playing our game!

(p.s. The words are complete rng so I guess that is just really, really good rng. :P)
(p.p.s. My friend is going to try out your game cause he thought it looked cool c: )

This is amazing! Definitely the most difficult entry I've played so far lol. Great idea and execution. :)

Heh, we actually had this same idea during the brainstorm process. Glad to see someone did it.
You spent a line in your instructions apologizing for not having time to write up instructions, and then wasted more time telling us that the goal of a shmup is to get far and rack up score. We know. Screens of this nature are to tell us the controls, and would have sufficed with "type words to replenish fuel, LMB to shoot, space to clear screen".
There was audio on the main menu, but then it defaulted to mute in game! I almost thought you had no more audio; I'm glad I checked as it wasn't until my second play that I got to hear that great track.
I only played on easy. Different difficulties is a bit much for a LD game; who's going to keep playing over and over? I would have preferred you focused on a single difficulty and didn't spend time implementing a concept that most people won't take advantage of. The game is a bit hard with no powerups and ludicrously simple with the maxed out powerup. Fuel ought to drain more the bigger gun you've got, making it a tradeoff.

Nice sprites! Didn't know if there was an ending or not, but I had fun enough on easy. I really wish the title screen was the game though! :p

Thanks for replying to my post. Really want to try this game, but I don't have a PC. I also added some bullet hell feature, but yours looks great! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/bomb-in-rhythm

Cool idea and really well implemented. I liked a lot the graphics and enjoyed the bosses in particular. It's a shame it doesn't have sound (apart from the menu music), but still, good job!

@dodoita First off, Thanks for playing my game! I appreciate you taking your time to do so! c:

To address the sound issue, that is because unfortunately our planned sound designer was busy this weekend so we couldn't do too much with sound.

That is also why we opted out of the music genre because the music is not ours. They are from the popular bullet hell game 'Touhou Project' and 'Bullet Hell Monday' like mentioned on the itch.io page.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, and thanks again for playing!

Nice, me and my friends also did a space shooter.

Btw, for some reason the background music was mute for me the first time I played (tried Normal). The volume slider was at 0, noticed when I was exiting. Tried restarting the game and then the music wasn't mute anymore. Went into instructions first from the main menu, dunno if that might have done something.

Hey final space, I have added support for mac and linux now so you should be able to play it! Try it out when you get a chance and let me know if there is anything wrong with the build. I don't have a mac so I wasn't able to test that one out, so let me know if you find any issues, Thanks! C:

Fun game, although the boss pattern was really easy. Didn't try difficulties higher than easy though so maybe more bosses spawn at once or the pattern changes? Overall a decent game though.

Fantastic game. 👍

The music is amazing, but the problem is, that is doesn't loop too well.

But other than that, it's perfect. Avoiding the bullets and typing at the same time seems difficult, but you're fast in it. Really cool game, I had a lot of fun playing it.

Ouch, music is good, appreciate if you add sound and music in game as well. :duck:

Howdy, thanks for playing our game first of all! To address the issue of sound not being in game, there actually is, however after seeing some streamers play our game, I realized this is a bug and should be fixed soon. There actually is, an in-game pause menu that you can use to turn the Background Music back on as a temporary work around until we get that bug ironed out. (There is no sound effects in-game though, so the SFX volume slider won't do anything in-game) The gameplay is much better with the in-game music so if you would like to replay it, maybe it might change your overall score of the game so I encourage you to do so! Thanks once again for taking the time to play our game and leaving feedback, we really appreciate it!

It looks and sounds great! Quite a challenge, but the [beak](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/motherducker)-and-forth between the mouse and keyboard is a really cool concept.

I dont know how you managed to combine my favorite genre, with my least favorite genre, but i like it. As a long time fan of Bullet Hells i was worried the typing mechanic would be too difficult but this plays very smooth. I feel the boss battle could use some tweaks, there are points in his movement pattern where it felt very difficult to avoid taking damage. Either way i was very impressed with this game.

Bonus points for sound and music volume sliders :)
