Hachi Block by Omiya Games

[raw]
made by Omiya Games for LD 42 (JAM)

Hachi Block is a combo-focused Tetris-based puzzle game! Score high by dragging blocks into a grid and creating a three-in-a-row horizontal or vertical block formation. Stay alert, however; don't let the blocks rise to the top of the screen!

Objective

To score as high as possible before the blocks stack to the top of the screen.

Controls

First, click on the 2x2 blocks on the right side of the screen to pick it. While dragging this piece, right-click or press space to rotate this block. Click anywhere (yes, anywhere; even on top of existing blocks) on the grid of blocks to drop the piece.

When 3 or more same-colored blocks are matched vertically or horizontally, those blocks will be eliminated, and points will be awarded.

Remember that each move will cause more blocks to drop from the top of the screen. If any blocks remain on the top of the grid, it's game over!

Log

  • v00 - Initial release. May or may not work based on compilation issues while building.
  • v01 - New platforms: WebGL, Linux, Mac now supported.
  • v02 - Fixing difficulty settings not progressing correctly. It was literally a single-character typo. Also fixed an oddly-angled block.
  • v03 - Fixing the mute buttons in the audio options to actually mute the music/sound effects, rather than making them really quiet.

I really like the design and color scheme! It's like a rubiks cube cross with tetras. The music is good too :)

I got a score of 4620. Pretty relaxing game, I think it takes a while to ramp up, but definitely gets harder as more blocks come up. I died because I wasn't paying attention as much to all the columns. I was trying to create more cascading combos - I think that's the only way you can work against the number of blocks filling the screen. Nice job!

Very surprising : in fact, when I see the description, I was thinking "Again a candy-crush-tetris like puzzle-game ...", but after a few seconds, I found your game very cool and fun

Great job !

@aeveis Yeah, a planned feature that didn't come through was some sort of block animation indicating a column is in danger of touching the top of the screen. Unfortunately, I ran out of time.

Edit: and did I mention the difficulty levels were a last minute addition? I didn't have time to balance it

I like the game mecanics here ! It is so satisfying to see the blocks eliminating themselves. I was terrible though and hardly reached 1000. Maybe the grid is too big, when I was stuck, I couldn't see the end of it. Great job !

I liked how relaxing the placement rules compared to puyo puyo/tetris-style mechanics adds a different vibe to the game while still preserving the urgency to clear the board. Nice touch!

Aesthetics were quite smooth and polished, even if the music could become a bit repetitive at times.

These games can get you into the zone easily, and yours was no exception. Great work!
