Fast Frontier by Ohmi

[raw]
made by Ohmi for LD 40 (COMPO)

Theme: The more you have, the worse it is

As this is my first LD entry, I didn't expect to get much done. But I was pleasantly surprised.

Descripion

Fast Frontier is a slow paced tank game in which you progress in a sidescrolling manner. Your goal as a tank commander is to advance a certain amount of meters and clear out everything in your way. The catch is: the more bullets you have in stock, whe weaker they are. If you do yor job right, everybody can get home for christmas. Just don't lose to many men on the way.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do :D Play here: https://ohmi.itch.io/fast-frontier

For a first time, NOT BAD AT ALL ! However the theme isn't really well implemented into the game ! Still, good job !

fun little game. It's hard to tell how powerful your ammo is, the shots seemed to do random damage, sometimes killing tanks in 1 hit others times multiple, not really tied to how many I had in store. I did shoot an incoming shot out of the air though, which made me laugh!

Thanks guys! Yeah I don't know why the shells are so slow, I just started with it like that and never felt the need to change it while testing.

Damage is a pretty random, probably too much. But thats the same on a real tank, depending on where exactly you hit it. (played too much War Thunder)

Aslo the sound levels are way different in the game and in the editor, so sorry for that.

I did like it, kept my attention for a good 15 minutes (yes that's hard for me ;p) and was pleasantly surprised when I got an airdrop with ammo, also really like the simple art style you went for. On my first try the ammo button didn't work though, and I couldn't buy more ammo. Also, like you already stated the audio is meh. Had to turn my volume way down to make it through the radio sound. overall a fun little game though. good job!

Idea is quite good. I enjoyed playing it for few minutes. Although the shells should be improved. They seem to deal random damage.

I really liked this. The hectic nature of controlling the gun angle, gun power, and driving forward/reverse made me feel like I was really in battle.

The art and (especially) sfx are all charming and really fit the game.

The ticket system is interesting, though I'm not sure why you don't allow air-drops if there are enemies around. I once had enough tickets to buy ammo, but ran out of ammo while engaging an enemy (I'm a horrible gunner and it wasted 8 rounds firing over him). I couldn't get more ammo, so I just waited for him to (slowly) kill me.

Minor typo: the first radio tip says "Press A or -> to go left". It should say "D or -> to go right" :)

Although maybe intended, the lack of visual cue concerning the cannon's power was a bit of a problem for me. I would suggest maybe showing at least the early trajectory as a dotted line, so that the player can get a feel for the shell's destination without wasting too much ammo (or I could just get better, I guess).

Overall, the concept works pretty well. The execution is indeed a bit rough, but as a first time entrant too, I know all too well how short these two days felt.

Great entry! It was a bit frustrating though running out of ammo near an enemy and having to slowly reverse to drop in some more. But nonetheless, I enjoyed it :D

Thanks for all the great feedback!

@budgiem2 I know :) I wanted to make it so when you're colse enough your crew would pop out and hurl grenades, to avoid this situation. Too little time for that. But i changed it right now, so that it's at least more clear when you can get air drops. Should help to avoid this a little.

I can't get this to load in firefox or safari. It's stuck on Downloading... Hopefully it's a problem on my end. Best of luck!

Not bad for a first entry. Concept is there but the game lacks polish.

@tvance I'm sorry to hear that, I also use firefox and it works for me. But it might take some time to load.

I restarted the browser and it worked. Congrats on your first submission! Going procedural must have been a fun challenge.

Pretty nice as for the first entry.

However, I got really annoyed by the gun mechanics. I would change it, so that the gun is independent from the tank chassis, since when you ride forward the terrain changes in height and thus the gun jumps up and down.

After all, I enjoyed playing the game, but there is a lot of possibilities of future improvement

A interesting little tank game, an for a first LD game it is really good.

@jonasz999 Thanks for the Feedback! What I try and go for inmy games is to have them be as realistic as possible while still being simple enough that I can actually make them. I was going for the old tank feel (think WW2) Modern tanks all have automated aiming, but then it was pretty hard to keep the gun straight while moving. I know it's not necessarily good practice in gamedev, but thats just how I roll. Everybody needs to be differnt in some way.

Quite a good job for a first LD game. The graphics were simple, but clear and nice. I liked the gun mechanics. One problem though, if you select the gun power slider by clicking on it, then W and D adjust the slider which makes it kind of a pain if you want to control the tank. Other than that, I don't have a whole lot of feedback, the game seemed to play well. Great job.

Interesting first game! Really solid for your first entry, congratulations. Simple but enjoyable art, good sound effects, maybe missing a background army tune. I also liked the radio interaction.

Unfortunately I come with many bugs... First, while I was still reading the intro panels, my mouse clicking (outside the button but in game) made the tank start to walk forward. It kept walking and going through mines while I was reading the panels, intrigued if this was intended. As I finished the panels, I soon died. Second time, while on the panels, my mouse clicking made the tank walk backwards. By the time I stopped it, it was already flying below the ground with negative meters lol (see image below).

Third time's the charm. All went well, but I felt that adjusting the slider was bothersome while trying to control the tank. The tank also started going backwards once on a more steep part of the ground. I discovered that passing through the tanks did nothing to both of us, which was kinda disappointing. Also, when I let myself die, went to get water and came back, my crew of 5 killed was already on 16 killed, as the enemies were not stopped upon game lost and kept shooting at me, depleting crew lives even though there were none. I can also keep moving the tank after dying.

I know this is a lot but it was a good entry for a first time and alone too, so don't be discouraged and keep working, this was a good work. Congratulations :)

@saramartins Thanks! Thats some great feedback. Most of those bugs I noticed or knew about, but I just didn't have the time to fix them. I thought they would not lessen the enjoyment if you played "properly" or just the way most people would play.
But mouseclicks moving the tank, thats new to me. I kept the settings from the Godot editor, so it would even work with a gamepad. Maybe you have a mouse with a few extra buttons and pressed them too? I have no idea how this could happen otherwise.

I will most likely put the game on the google play store after the voting is done. Most of what you mentioned here is on my to-do list before that happens :)
