Running From Power by MaiMai

[raw]
made by MaiMai for LD 39 (JAM)

You play as a hero that has become too strong, but your town is under attack from pirates.

If you don't use your power, your friends will all die - if you do use your power, you will likely kill some of your friends but save some others.

What do you do?

A minimap would be nice :)
It was a fun experience, i like the graphics! Reminds me of the times when i studied blender and was playing around with the unity primitives.
Although the theme is obviously not converted but it is still an optional thing, right :)

@dioinecail - A minimap is a really good idea. I think it would help with finding the last few pirates, like @sean-beyer mentioned is difficult.
Also, I saw power more as fighting power, not electrical power. A variation on the theme.
@blksocks I agree, haha!
Thanks for the feedback and for playing!

I murdered half of the city but the pirates are gone! Unfortunately it was hard to find some of them. The music is cool and I like the art style.

Thanks and good job, @pio, you murderer! But yeah, it's a problem; I didn't have time to do much balancing.

Liked the concept, but it was hard to find the pirates, especially when I was down to the last one. The area is rather big, so maybe a map or the pirates seeking the player out would help.

Liked the graphics and mood

Good job

It could have been fun to have something special happening when accidentally killing the police women. A radar showing where to find pirates could have helped. Nice game.

I like the concept of having too much power and that you need to get rid of some of it by just bursting energy waves - that's a first I think =) The mood of the game was nice but (as you mention in the text) the game-play is a bit slow. I had 2 baddies left but I couldn't find them, maybe they were behind a house out of view? I was wondering why people were sliding around on their backs as well until I realized that the baddies hurt the goodies! I accidentally killed some people by trying to jump, which of course set of the energy burst instead :)

Fun game i liked the voxel art. However, some animations would have made it better. Also all the dead pirates and friends kept sliding around. Very well done on the soundtrack it set a great mood.

Me: "This is the easiest fighting game I have ever played"

Game: "Baddies: 1"

Me: "This is the hardest searching game I have ever played"

Overall, nice art and music and I had a lot of fun with the game.

Good game overall. Music, sound effects and small details such as game slowing down during explosions, make the game feel finished. It's a bit weird with all the dead bodies sliding around though. I probably would have despawned bodies a few seconds after dying, but I admit it's fun to blast dead bodies off the screen! :D Maybe just add a lot of angular drag (friction) to prevent them from sliding everywhere. Towards the end of the game I just ran around trying to find the last pirate, and eventually quit the game before completing it. I'd suggest adding an arrow at the top, pointing towards the closest enemy.

The music, human models and buildings were nice, but I don't really like mixing low-rez and voxel art. You could be at least avoid rounded surfaces for more aesthetic look. Also if you are using one direction camera you should avoid things like front walls (make it slightly translucent or disappear when it is close enough) because I never knew if anyone wasn't hiding in there. But the explosion effect is well made and the gameplay was fun. Nice entry

The presentation is pretty good and pretty too. Unlike @piotrek I didn't mind the mixed style that much. The camera being blocked I did mind though.

The super punch (or whatever it is) is kind of interesting, but you sure are not running out of power by any means. What if you started out with a set of energy. Every punch would deplete the energy a random amount and cause a random sized explosion. That way you'd be running out of power and not being in total control of your power.

Some consequences for accidentally attacking civies would have been nice too, for instance a short epilogue after the pirates have been dealt with. Something along the lines of "These peaceful citizens of Peaceville were mauled in the pirate attack: ...(list of names based on casualties)... Mick Fist (the hero) is being prosecuted for destroying property, causing third degree burns and indecent exposure. (list of crimes based on what you did)"

Ok work.
