Action Chess by antonsem

[raw]
made by antonsem for LD 41 (COMPO)

Basically, it is a chess game without turns. Although not as cool as First Person Shooter - Dungeon Crawler - Dating Sim at least it is something manageable in a given time frame. Still didn't rule out the possibility of FPS-DC-DS game!

There is an @ in your bit bucket link, my browser does not like that.

This game looks cool, nice idea, I will play it as soon as the rating round starts!

Played it already, nice that you built a web game, this is the most accessible way for a game jam.

My secret win strategy: jump four times with the knight, always kills the king :-)

This strategy does not always win, sometimes the knight is taken down or some other piece threatens my king, I like that the CPU plays randomly, this makes it more unpredictable and creates some new situations. Really cool, great job on this one!

@gonutz sorry about that, changed the link. Glad you liked the idea :)

@gonutz didn't have much time to program and test proper ai, still I think it is a good enough for a jam :)

Thanks, the link works now. Also note that I updated my comment. I will rate your game when ratings are open.

You are definitely right, this is not just "a good enough" game for a jam, don't be shy! This is a really cool idea and very well executed! You can be plenty proud of yourself for making this and making it in under 48 hours!

Great game, pretty fun. Would be cool if Kings couldn't move into check.

Cool idea! I like how the moves are on a cooldown. I wish the pieces were more recognizable. The place pieces are hard to see and they're all hard to distinguish. But it's still a cool game!

I also made a chess mashup! Check it out! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/rapid-bullet-hell-blitz-chess

Nice machup ! Could be interesting to see what this concept could do in a multiplayer environment !

@Valden I think it would be great but I didn't had enough time to do that. And I really don't like to do network stuff :) but it might work on a single tablet.

Simple but great idea! I really enjoyed the game.

It is a great game, if you wish to improve it make the ai think slow or fast for difficulty levels. Thank you for html

A brilliant idea! Take the board game out of the board game - genuis! While brainstorming I came up with the idea for a survival chess, but in the end I had something completely different. Always funny how brains work - when they do, that is.
PS: In case you're wondering what I did end up with, I got a Racing/Dodge meets Choice game. Would be glad if you found the time to give it a spin: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/cruise-co

Fun idea. I don't think that this form of chess has a future though :D

So fun and suspenseful! You have to think really fast, or you'll get killed on both sides. I love it.

I watched this come together through the news feed. I went into it planning to use a strategy that was used in one of the progress reports, butttttt looks like you've upped the AI since then. :) Great art, great work!

You and I had the same idea! (at least at some point during the compo)

Really liked that the AI played randomly, adds some "complexity" to the game instead of a poorly implemented AI that gets in the way. Glad you put cooldowns on the pieces!

Real nice idea, gets a little bit of time to get used to it and IA is actually quite impressive, it feels like it is overwhelmed by information too which must have been pretty hard to do, very good job !

Wild, and tense! I was claiming the center with c4 d4 e4 and whipping out knights and that was going okay. I definitely ran into some trouble with exchanges and a few times it was like WHOOPS I lost a piece and now I have to mentally re-gear for the new situation. I mean, situations change quickly in blitz chess, but they move along a certain sort of a path through the gamespace. This game strangely teleports to new positions in alternate trees in a way that my blitz chess brain patterns were sideswiped by. It was a cool experience!

Aesthetics-wise I loved the crunchy sound effects and found the on-piece timer totally clear and really necessary/helpful. I tried playing on a long train ride, but the color contrast is so low between the dark squares and dark pieces that I couldn't play. I was madly squinting, but it was like the enemy army had cloaking fields. I had to set it aside and come back with more friendly ambient lighting.

A cool idea that I enjoyed toying with. Nice work!
