Icarus Isolation by King Kujito

CHECK THE CONTROLS, VERY IMPORTANT
Discover the small worlds in the skies. Fly between islands and unravel the mystery of Icarus Isolation.
I wanted to submit this for the compo, but my RAM was mysteriously filled so I had to restart, update and force quit till I got it to work on the last day of the jam. So it's a game jam game now.
This is my first entry to LD, nice to be in :)
CONTROLS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lL0_NyYSrrg -WASD: movement -SPACEBAR: ascend -E: descend -P: pause (navigate the pause menu with the mouse)

EDIT:
- The source is now also available on https://yriclium.itch.io/icarusisolation
- I have made some bug fixes and fixed some control issues (uploaded as version 1.2)

You use the mouse to close menu panels, but not for anything else? This desperately needs proper 3rd person camera and movement controls to be enjoyable at all. Trying to land on a small pillar is an exercise in frustration rather than awe and delight.
Keep working at it. This here is a very rough :gem: indeed.
I really like the graphics but the controls are a little confusing at the start. I did not encouter bugs...
I'll rate your game as soon as it's possible to judge. 😀
The graphics looks amazon, the sound design good.
The controls are a bit odd but the beauty makes it enjoyable.
This is really poetic :)
Good job !
Btw great job :D
This is my compo game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/space-honey-the-adventure-of-little-bee
The graphic design is amazing and the controls are a major hindrance of getting anything out of the game.
I'd be perfectly content with just flying around and looking at the scenery, however without the ability to turn in any reasonable fashion that's going to be a pipe dream. :(
Also nice job on the wing-animations. Sad to hear that this didn't end up in the comp because of external issues - I can see how that'd be depressing.
cheers~
*The application “IcarusIsolation” can’t be opened.*
I have some screenshots but my computer is in Dutch, so keep them merely as a visual reference to the steps I gave earlier

@king-kujito As for the game itself, I have to agree that the controls are problematic, but I otherwise liked it. The ability to steer with the mouse would have been an amazing boon; partly because the mouse, as an analog input device, provides more precise control, but mostly because mouse-look has been a staple input method for 3D games for almost 20 years.
I'm going to echo the comments about the controls, but I think if you were to expand the game, then I wouldn't mind the time that it takes to learn them.
Really nice work!
Also, after I "died", I think I broke the camera angle? It only happened once, but it changed to somewhat of a top-down camera, so I couldn't see where I was going.
Though other than those technical issues, the art design is mighty impressive, and if you do a polished post-LD version, I'd love to play it :)
Besides you got a bonus with me, cause those islands in the sky like in Zelda: Skyward Sword are just one of my favorite things a game can have! Also the ambient sound really adds to the overall mood of the game.
But your camera and controls make a perfekt game to be "just" a really great game.
Sometimes I could neither turn left nor right, sometimes i could. Sometimes I could change the y-axis with the arrow keys, sometimes could not.
And the camera really should reset after you died, I often found myself stuck in a top-down camera angle.
But still, I love the Idea and the visuals as well as the atmosphere of the game are brilliant!
EDIT: I fixed the cursor

PS: The cursor doesnt show on the screenshot
edit: ok, I just read your thing about the updated version having fixed the crystal but so never mind about that.
Controls remind me of the flight school in GTA: San Andreas. It wasn't that hard to get used to .
One little thing: sometimes I "suddenly" start to fall, but I don't know why (SPACE does not recover me). It happened twice. Maybe there is a reason for it, which I have overlooked...
Best of luck if you keep working on it!
The game is visually pleasing, and the animations for the character are stellar for a Jam game.
As seems to be the sentiment in many other comments, I found the controls very hard to master. I also found it confusing to navigate the skies. Maybe that's just me, but I soon wouldn't know what is up and what is down. Also, after I died... it seems the camera changed from a behind the character view to a top-down view, which made steering even stranger.
Overall, though - a tremendous Jam effort, and a game that could definitely be expanded upon and tweaked a little to make for a fun experience.
Still gorgeous but the controls are still a bit hard to manage. Great work by the way :)

I have a little problem of the control though. I think you sure put pitch & rolling together instead of advance (throttle) & rolling. i.e., control the rolling with left/right arrows or pitch with W/S. I think this is a more comfortable way for flight simulation players.
Anyway, you've built up a beautiful small world. I'd really love to see this game being complete, and I expect how you make a beautiful, fantastic story
I love to discover all the other islands but I find it really hard to control the player.
I just uploaded my game to a web version so you can play it on your mac ;)

It's a shame, since the graphics, audio and mood are suberb.
Also, the UI is absolutely terrible compared to the resto of the game. It's heartbreaking to see such beautiful animations and particle effects when the menu pops up and it's the default unity button.
But jamwise, you reached awesome heights. Great work Kujito!
I didn't know, while working on the game, that so many people would struggle with the controls. I tried to improve them as much as possible in the updated version and due to the deadline being a bit too close for comfort, I rushed the UI.
