Fortress Knights by elrobo

[raw]
made by elrobo for LD 44 (COMPO)

Welcome to Fortress Knights. Where your knight is a fortress.

Breaking bricks with your head will regain your HP Taking Damage or building bricks will reduce it Watch out for the wall of flame encroaching from the left. Destroy all the fortress knights to emerge victorious.

Controls:

Arrow Keys or WASD - Move [Z] or [.] - Attack [X] or [/] - Jump Attack + Jump - Build a Brick under your character

I made this as I was really wanting to make something in the gameboy style for its anniversary. What would a 2019 style game feel like with the sort of concessions to adapt for the form factor. It's my first time working with screen effects to shift the color and pixel density, and also 2d animated sprites. I have so much to learn and improve on.

This game was made with Unity 2018.3, SFXR, and Aseprite. There was so much I wanted to add (more complex brick building shapes, many more weapons, and enemy patterns). Hope you enjoy it!Yca7OFIk2P.gif

Nice work! I didn't know it was the Gameboy's birthday... cool. I liked the sort of procedural graphics feel within the confines of the limited display.

Did a great job capturing the look of the GameBoy! The only thing about it is that the collisions feel a bit sticky whenever I'm trying to jump over a brick while moving. Other than that, wonderful aesthetic!

the intro part to the game made me think I was about to jump into a gameboy battle royale that was actually really cool. I did like the concept of building and breaking bricks. It seemed like the level was pretty pretty good tutorial level to teach the concepts, of course game jams you always run out of time to do more so it was nice to see something pretty fleshed out. It was a little difficult to do the brick laying but I got the hang of it

The main thing I would of loved to see would of been some sweet music to match with the aesthetic and sfx but It's understandable that music is not easy to make.

Either way I enjoyed the game and how you went full into the gameboy look and feel

Cool ideas here! Took me a second to get the title :P I like the building/destruction mechanics and the combat was fun. I liked being able to destroy a tower to get to enemies that were out of range. Nice work, Chance!

Good ideas in here, I like the Gameboy aesthetic but not a fan of how blurry the pixel art is. Took me a while to realise you can build blocks by pressing both action buttons at once.

The design is pretty awesome, the character glitch, the drop in the beginning
Nice win animation :dancer_tone5:

Enemys are a bit to easy to dodge
Great entry over all!

really enjoyed the game.. even managed to get through the unbreakable wall at the end..
If you push against it and start jumping while shooting your character places blocks underneath you which push you through the wall... just a little sad that I didn't find an easter egg at the very end there :(

well done on a cracking entry

Cool retro aesthetics. The Battle Royale style drop at the beginning was hilarious - mixing that retro style with such a modern twist.

Groovy dance moves! I like the Pilotwings-ish landing at the beginning and the fun dance moves at the end.

The skydiving was cool - reminded me of MDK or battle royale games. The art style - damn, this is so cool! Does the dropping location actually change anything in the level? Seems like it's the same level anyway :)

Sometimes when you jump near a wall you can break a tile at your headlevel that is not directly above you, but to the side.

I got stuck here not being able to get out of those bricks:

@bluwind360 wish I had gotten more in there, I did want to get a few secrets and some items from breaking bricks, but had to work on the weekend. Thanks for playing!

@datagreed The drop location doesn't change the level (another unfinished feature) but hitting the target spawns an axe weapon beside your character which makes it much easier (again wanted to get some more random loot on the level, but time). Yes my collision code was very sloppy for breaking bricks or stomping on enemies. Hmmm your stuck position should have let you still hit the bricks with your weapon to break them, maybe it wasn't triggering correctly. Sorry about that. Thanks for all the feedback!

In-game instructions would have been nice, I only read the brick-building thing after I finished the game. Did not need it however. The real problem with the controls is that my X and Z key are no where near each other, you seem to assume a US keyboard layout which is obviously not true for many LD participants.

The gameplay is simple but fine. I think the game is way too easy overall. I did not like that you could jump twice in the time it takes to reload. Most games make it possible to jump twice and be able to shoot in the middle, which is a good thing to do. At least some indicator as to when I can shoot again would have been nice.

I relly like the graphics. Anti-aliased gameboy graphics? I'm in! Really cool what you did with just four colors :-)

@gonutz I agree, and have the same sentiment when playing games, instructions should be in the game, my use of the theme in that regard is poorly explained. Also agreed on the weapon cooldown being visible and a bit more tuned. And big oof on the keyboard, yes that was a poor assumption.

Thanks for playing and commenting!

Thanks for taking my critique so well! That is actually impressive. I always try to formulate negative things in a way that is helpful but I have never received such a good reaction to it!
Looking forward to your next LD games :-)

The idea that you can destroy the bricks underneath the enemies, make them fall and then kill them, is really cool. What is also pretty cool is that i got the enemies killing each other when i stood underneath one of them. I don't think i like the anti-aliased graphics, i would just round positions to whole pixels and turn anti-aliasing off. But you know maybe that is just my taste.
