God All Smitey by SundanceKid

[raw]
made by SundanceKid for LD 44 (COMPO)

God All Smitey is a game in which you play as God and use your peoples' lives as currency. You can visit Earth to take lives in order to buy new Scepters. God's biggest desire, however, is the legendary cookie sold at the cafe in the clouds. Buy that cookie and you win.

Destroying buildings takes more lives!

Don't die! You'll lose everything! Just click the "leave" button to bail out if your health gets too low, then buy a health potion.

TOOLS:

ENGINE - Unity 2018.3.12

PROGRAMMING - C# in Visual Studio Code

ART - GIMP

MUSIC - Recorded myself playing guitar with Audacity. Shoutout to my suitemate for letting me borrow his guitar, and shoutout to my other suitemate for letting me borrow his mic!

a nice bend on the theme, what a clever and original idea!

Maybe a little hard but it's ok, it only needs some balancing.

Awesome graphics for a compo entry

Overall: fun and well crafted.

Please, work in a post compo version and put it online!

And God got his cookie in the end...

Great game, smiting those mortals was a lot of fun, them killing me - not so much. The whole arsenal of scepters was great - every single one feeling unique and fun in its own special way.

Overall, I give it a 25/17

"Yes Cookie"... Very nice game, very hard until you get the trick of staying high...
Loved that you can upgrade. Nice work. :D
What did you use to make the music?

Interesting take on the theme. The mouse-only movement was a nice touch.

@incd021 The music is a sped up version of me playing guitar, recorded and cut with Audacity. Thanks very much for the feedback :)

Why are people shooting at god ?

@anstabo Because god is taking their lives to spend on cookies, of course.

Very cute - this definitely needed some more playtesting, but regardless I got past the first hump.

Pro strats: float as high and to the right as you can, only coming down when your charge is ready. Be sure to get ~600-700 every round. You'll have a dozen restarts at the beginning, but once you get the first scepter, it's a lot easier.

I enjoyed the art and music. Nice game!

@josefnpat Thanks for the feedback! My strategy is usually to kill as many of the tanks and soldiers first, then start destroying the buildings :)

I died a few times at first but once i got the concept I had a really good time playing the game. The cute graphics are nice and the music contributes so much to the mood of the game. Good job!

Game is really fun, and so satisfying to blow up armies for cookies! But a bit hard for me, I died everytime and could not afford a single cookie! Nice work!

What a clever take on the theme... Or not, I don't care, I love to smite the mortals!

Well done! I found myself "just one more time"ing despite (or perhaps because of) the initial difficulty. Looking at a few tips you and other commenters gave helped me out a great deal. Sometimes I'd spawn with a lot of tanks underneath me and feel like a good chunk of my health was taken before I could get out of frame or load up my first attack. I think it would help to have an audio or visual effect cue the user when their next strike is ready. That way, they can keep their eye on the action and be ready to strike immediately without just mashing the mouse button.

Really frustrating learning curve. You start each excursion to Earth with 0 charge, so you're defenseless for a few seconds while the soldiers pummel you mercilessly. Targeting also seems to be overly finicky. I didn't get enough souls for a single upgrade; buying a health boost wiped out almost everything I earned.

@ryusui Yeah you have to try to dodge for the first few seconds before you get your charge. As for targeting you just have to click on the soldiers and that will blow up an area of them. Remember that destroying the buildings earns you many more lives, so I would recommend first clearing an area of soldiers and then farming the buildings. I think that should be more than enough to consistently heal yourself and get upgrades, but thanks for the feedback.

The music here is really great, and helps to set a nice lighthearted tone that meshes well with the rest of the aesthetics, providing a perfect complement to the actual subject matter of the game.

Like others, I thought the game was a little too hard (even with your helpful tips), which is a shame, because I was having fun learning the game and _did_ feel myself improving. Sometimes, though, I had trouble getting enemies even within the frame of the camera without taking damage, so even mopping up the last few enemies could feel a little random. Nonetheless, really well done! The painting of the cookie at the beginning, I have to say, was my favorite touch.

all I really wanted was a cookie

yes cookie

that made me laugh pretty hard once I got it. I think the more expensive sceptres could have been better. The power was there, but the lower attack speed almost made them not worth it.

Hehe, novel idea! Nice graphics, sound and humorous content although personally I found the game pretty tricky. Great work.

Damn, cookies are expensive in heaven :D

Awesome concept. I found that it's easier to farm money by blowing up buildings (love how they fall over, you feel a little bit like a Godzilla (bad pun intended))

LOL
