Learn to count in Japanese! Oh WOW!

ScreenSelector.png

I didn't have time to participate in the Jam this time. My other half is busy play testing the TTRPG that we are making and I've got my schedule full handling everything else. Since time and space are actually the same thing I decided I can take time from my Japanese Studies for the week, and squeeze just a little more time for me to make this game. Anyway that's how I'm justifying the theme, go easy on my I made this in less than 9 hours by myself.

I opted out of audio as I did not make the music or SFX, but I opted into Graphics. Those are my vacation photos I took, so its 'art' I 'made'. Hope you like them, they are all from November 2017.

Simple game, but I found very interesting the idea of making some sort of ¿¿educational game?? Nice work!

@ditzel @sharks No matter how bad you did the game will tell you you did a good job :)

I wanted to be encouraging.

Greetings @lost-dutchman-software !
You could've set it inside a tiny Japanese apartment or capsule hotel? I accept your theme usage anyway  - actually, I like entries that think outside the norm, or that use a hobby or interest.

Edit - had the theme been 'Magic' or 'Decay' I was going to use photos from my Pendle walk on saturday and use those for something + witches. Wrong theme.

Sadly, despite going to Japan, and having all kinds of phrase books, I may have forgotten it all... :frowning2:

Hmm, I need to work on 7 and 8 kanji recognition. This was a useful and pleasant experience :)

Once you get to the later stages it becomes obvious due to the alternative options having less digits in the kanji then the correct answer. You may want to mix up 10, 100, 1000 kanji positions so you have to read them too, but then again having them the way you do may help people learn them easier at first.

Also there is a WebGL memory bug that crashes it out at some point.

@trevor-hayes Thanks for the heads up on that bug! Also I'm thinking of really re-working the game and having it use keyboard input, show you the number in Japanese, and you have to enter it in Arabic numerals. I'll probably just do tha kanji for that at first since it is easier to code.

A very educational game, made me want to learn Japanese. Congratulations on your participation!

@tero-pulkkinen If you play in kanji the first 3 are really easy, its 1 line for 1, 2 lines for 2 3 lines for 3, at four it gets weird because it turns into a box, 5 kind of looks like a 5 and a 3 mashed together, after that its rote memorization until 10 which looks like the roman numeral 10 tilted 90 degrees.

@raccoon-js Nice! I hope you played in Kanji so you didn't see my shame of not handling the exceptions in hiragana/romanji

@diego-manarim If you really want to learn Japanese I have some advice I can send your way as far as how to start.

I'm learning Japanese and this is a good refresher. Nicely done! Out of curiosity, who did the music?

I felt obliged to play this. Your justification for why this fits the theme was amusing, and I quite enjoyed reading random number kanji late in the evening. An improvement I'd suggest is to switch to random numbers in the kanji mode sooner - I was about to close it by the time I got to 25. たのしいです。

Haha, I gonna be honest with you, as much as I like japanese, my choices in this game feel pretty random, like you gotta teach me something, I cant just learn words by trial and error T_T. Its a simple game, but I think there are better ways to take Japanese as the theme, especially I know there are words that are built up from other smaller words, that would really make a fun game I reckon. Anyhow, good job on putting everything together, but the game didnt really teach me any japanese, so you're accused for false advertisement! :joy:

@matt-tuttle Its Royalty free, no attribution music from Bad Snacks found on https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music?feature=blog

@divinenephron I think when I come back to this im going to start at random numbers only and treat it as a practice tool.

Definitely an original idea. Very challenging for those who have a very bad memory (*cough* me *cough*). Overall interesting experience.

Nice little study app. I appreciate the option to do hiragana or kanji. Anything to help me solidify reading hiragana is worth the time. It could have used some more gamey aspects though, it's pretty easy as is. Also adding in the alternative readings よん and なな for 4 and 7 would have added some variety.

@simba I use yon for よん for the 10's and up, like よんじゅうし for 44, but I didn't use なな even though its the more fun way to read 7 :(

@agar3s your half way to being able to count to 100! after 10 they do 10-1 (juuichi/じゅういち/十一) then 10-2, ect. at 20 and higher its 2-10-1, 2-10-2 ect..
