Rat Lab by tenshi42

[raw]
made by tenshi42 for LD 44 (JAM)

Rat Lab is a wave-based scoring game, in which you are a test dummy, a poor clone forced to suffer through randomly generated rooms and endless combat simulations, until death.

Your life is the only thing you have that is worth anything, so the lab A.I. has designed an upgrade system based around it. You pay in permanent loss of health the precious upgrades to your stats and your shiny new weapons.

The cycle of the game is simple: it begins a new wave, throws you in it, and it doesn't end until you've cleaned up the generated room of all the slimes. Then, you'll be able to activate the Upgrade Console (by pressing F near it), and to trigger the next room generation (and the next wave...).

Controls: - WASD: Move your player - Mouse direction: The direction you're shooting/hitting toward - Left mouse click, Space: Use equipped weapon (shoot) - Escape: Pause and quit menu - Cheat! "k" (think KillAll) is bound to a function that wipes all enemies in the current wave.

TODOs and ameliorations: - Balancing! Lots of it. - More than one type of enemy - More content in general (Gauntlet types, room prefabs, upgrades...) - A simpler stat handling system - A way to indicate "used" upgrades - A crowd pathfinding algorithm (it gets really really crowded in later waves)

Regrets: - Lost way too much time on stats and balancing - Not enough content

Points we are proud of: - Own implementation of the A* pathfinding algorithm (by tenshi42), fast and optimized enough for most needs

I had fun trying to get the most overpowered upgrades, but I think I came across a bug (or a really overpowered upgrade). Every time you choose lightning fist, your lightning gets bigger. I picked it about 4 times, and my lightning was so big that I one-shot every room by cicking once. This then applied to other upgrades too, so my wind punching got really strong as well.

There were also a few issues with shooting not always going towards the mouse and the player getting stuck on walls. Overall I enjoyed messing around with the ugrades though.

@boxedmeatrevolution Thanks you for your comments.
Time was missing for balancing so yes, you are over powered really quick. ^^'

Really dig the music. Even though it's short, it's really fitting to have heavy metal guitars playing, while you fighting goo monsters as some rando in a science lab  Unfortunately, I stopped receiving damage after 7 or 8 waves (I played twice and noticed it at different times).

Nice game
I think that the lighting are overpowered.
I don't know how I do it but at a certain point (after wave 10) I don't get any damage from enemies, so I quit the game.
