A World of Death! by tompudding

[raw]
made by tompudding for LD 38 (COMPO)

It's a world of slaughter, a world of tears It's a world of death and a world of fears!

Have you ever wanted to use an umbrella to smite demon dolls? Now's your chance buddy! It uses pygame and pyopengl in the unlikely event you can run the source, but fear not, because I'll package it up for various platforms tomorrow.

This game was inspired by the ride "It's a Small World" that first debuted at the World's Fair in 1964, and can now be found at various Disney theme parks. Since I didn't have time to actually make any art for this game (and I can't draw anyway) the resemblance pretty much stops at the boat and the music. Apologies

Good game!
It's a good and well executed idea. The sound feels well, the music sells the hell theme well, despite the funny approach.
It feels satisfying to let the demons bounce off your umbrella, however once they are on the ship they become a little bit hard to handle. They can fully disappear behind the ship texture and hitting them is too hard at times.
One of the most enjoyable games I played so far.

loved the lighting especially with the shadow from the umbrella, sometimes it was hard to see the kids. i died after the screen was flashing about, don't know how i was killed though, none was on my boat prior to the lights flickering.

being able to quickly switch between the umbrella deflecting mode and the hitting mode would have been nice, the delay was a little annoying as i couldn't stop things flying in while some were on my boat.

Overall just a few issues, but well done! I liked it

Haha I really like the vocals. Very funny game with a creepy theme. I couldn't figure out how to deal with the demons once they're on the boat, but I definitely enjoyed bouncing them off the umbrella. The lighting effects were neat, and I like your take on the music.

Overall a really good entry!

Great fun! Light-hearted and a bit creepy at the same time. Great use of voice for the sound effects.

Using the umbrella was fun and it was satisfying to "boing" the dolls into the water. I found them really hard to hit once on the boat for some reason - either my aim is bad or the collision detection didn't quite match the umbrella swing animation.

I didn't feel like it matched the theme much, but that doesn't really matter. :) Overall really great.

Awesome audio effects! Fighting the demons once they board the ship is very hard, so I basically had to block them all to avoid losing very fast. Had fun with this, a mixture of a well-made core mechanic with brilliant sound effects.

Funny story: This is exactly what my nephew wanted me to do when he heard the theme!

This game is probably better than it has any right to be  I had a blast! Lighting and water are both outstanding! My only real gripe is how hard it is to see the baddies sometimes once they're in the boat. Kudos on having two uses for the umbrella! Very clever.

Fun game. As the other people have said, protecting the boat with an open umbrella was easy, but I couldn't figure out how to hit them once they were on the boat.

I made a video review of your game:

All in all some really cool graphic effects, nice sound effects but the audio latency takes away from that. Gameplay has potential - the delay before you can hit or block creates a nice element of in-the-moment strategy, but since there's no warning for when the arrows are going to come, you can't really plan it.

Well done, and thanks for letting me experience the famous ride! :)

Very fun game, the umbrella mechanic is very enjoyable and easy to use, but once the enemies go on the boat I usually die. It should be easier to kill them on the boat. Anyways good game and I loved the music!

Brilliant game, lovely graphics, lots of fun! So satisfying to bounce enemies off of the umbrella, but once they're in the boat, attacking them doesn't always work, and I end up dying. Great game overall, though!

Even though you didn't manage to fully make it resemble the ride, it's a clever take on the theme. The atmosphere is cool with all the lighting effects and the creepy music. The sound effects are pretty goofy, but I really enjoyed them. The umbrella mechanics are also pretty neat. It's fun bouncing enemies away with it. The enemies can be a bit hard to see/hit once they get in the boat, though. Also, your heath should reset when you die. Currently you basically have to restart the whole game if you reach a checkpoint with too little health.

Very cool submission! Restarting the level with the same number of hearts and no way to replenish was kind of a bummer. I liked the lighting and water effects and the music, too.

I love the feeling that comes out of that creation. The gameplay is simple but effective and i really enjoyed the ride even though i'm not sure about the theme.

I liked it! The sound effects when the lil guys dive at you is funny, and the game is pretty well balanced. I would suggest maybe a heal partial heal on respawning? It was pretty easy to get into a hole I couldn't recover from. Nice work!

I played it several times and swung my umbrella to try and knock the dolls off my boat, but it never seem to work for me. I could hardly get into the first level. That was till I turned invincible which was cool.

Really enjoyed the feel of bouncing enemies off of the umbrella, and like the use of spring like water, and shadows from the umbrella. Overall a fun game :)

Hilarious sound design and a very innovative umbrella mechanic really had me hooked :)
Maybe killing the gnomes after they're on the boat would have been easier if the umbrella attack triggered on mouse press instead of release. Also, I found the lack of fullscreen mode annoying as any clicks outside the game window took away focus from the game. The text at the beginning of each level vanished so fast I was almost never able to read it and the music sometimes wildly played two instances at once, resulting in chaos :D
