Small World Resort Manager by udo
Dive into the exciting world of holiday resort management, courtesy of Small World Resorts!
ively complete, barring any bugs (this is my first Compo entry so the time pressure hit much harder). Let me know if you encounter any issues, I'll fix them as soon as I can. Due to time constraints, I wasn't able to get two features in that I really wanted: "garbage on the island + janitors" and "buying new land". It sucks, because it probably would have taken only two more hours...
The controls should be relatively self-explanatory. It's a pixelated tycoon-type game.
Didn't have time for music, so you might want to queue up some Reggae or something ;)

Post-LD Changelog
- fixed a bug that would sometimes cause a harbor building not to show up when playing the browser version
- fixed a problem with the max tourist spawn (it's now limited by the number of harbors)
- hopefully fixed a bug that sometimes causes overlays not to show up
- removed MP3 version of the sound effects, as that might cause some browsers to hickup
- based on user feedback: revised the cost of buildings so you can't screw your game up at the beginning
How it was made
This game was made from scratch with the Pixi.js (http://www.pixijs.com/) library, also: Howler.js (https://howlerjs.com/), jQuery (https://jquery.com/), Minibars (https://github.com/udo/minibars), Pathfinding.js (https://github.com/qiao/PathFinding.js/), and a custom font: http://www.dafont.com/press-start-2p.font

Forgot to research stuff at first.
There's some kind of bug with research timer not showing up and thus never completing until you reload the page(got 41% in to a season before I realized that the research I started at the start probably isn't going to get done)
Also there seems to be a cap of 100 people so I'd assume that doing more harbors at that point would be a waste.
it seems research does not work
Like I said, if you're not on Chrome, I'd advise using the downloadable version.
Nice job!
A few notes:
- I was able to screw myself by immediately buying a hotel for 10m and not making any money (i tohught the first 2 options were blanked out). Maybe change the starting money to 9m to prevent this?
- It wasn't obvious how to get started and/or what was giving me money. However once I got the hang of it all is well.
- Great look, and the population's ai seems to work well.
- Sometimes the words in the speech bubbles were hard to read (seems like an issue with fonts/scaling). I also thought that 'rest' meant they want a hotel to rest...but then decided it means 'restaurant'? Which is it?
- It seemed to me like it was a bit unbalanced: once you get a nightclub your money just goes crazy and i spammed nightclubs and became a billionaire real quick. But that might be the point. There were no consequences (as far as I could tell) to unhappy travellers, some of them would leave I suppose, but my nightclub spam did a good job.
- On my first game research went fine, but i replayed and it wasn't working.
Overall a great entry. Really simple intuitive interface and the systems all seem to work as intended :D GOOD JOB
I'm not sure what's up with the research bug, I can't even reproduce it right now. I switched some things around, but until I can actually reproduce I'm afraid it'll keep happening. Did you play the web version or the downloadable one?
About the negative consequences: I had pollution and night club unpleasantness planned, but I ran out of time to implement it. This game came together very late, and it's kind of a shame that I didn't do the Jam, because adding cool features wouldn't take long now...
Thanks to everybody who tried the game <3 I gotta work right now, but I'm going to play the games of everybody who commented here tomorrow at the latest!
Bugginess is preventing my progress.
I played in the browser and it seems to store a lot in the cache or something, because if I close the window and open a new one its the same gamestate!
Making a new game from the options also introduces some other bugs (like the research stuff other folks mentioned)
I LIKE IT
Congrats on your Compo!!
EDIT
Okay,
I thought the money coming in was slow... then I built a second harbor and it took off from there, there were so many brown stick figures demanding party, beach and hunger like cro-magnon frat boys.
Didn't have any issues with research btw, and played in chrome.
A lot of fun playing this! I love the sound of people when move to beach hahaha. The Small World concept here is interesting although is not important at all. This is one of the best polished and solid games I have seen on this jam (You did it too good in Compo :astonished:). Congratulations.
I agree, Small World Resort Manager is quite polished (although by far not the most polished Compo entry I've seen this time around), however the downside is that I didn't get all the features in I wanted...
