The Overseer by jmholland96

[raw]
made by jmholland96 for LD 39 (JAM)

giphy (13).gif

*Match tiles to perform different actions to retain your position as The Overseer.

*Choose the right action to handle both innocent protesters and aggressive rioters.

*See how long you can stay in power.

This is my first ever game jam attempt. I wish I had more time to balance the gameplay but I am happy with the end result.

Not a bad game! Took me a minute to get the swing of things but then it was really fun! Loved the art style and the way that everything felt. Love seeing the things that people have been able to make with Unity on this site! If you want to check out my game you can here! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/dodge-the-box

I downloaded the game and read you instruction. I shuffled as you said, but I don't get it ^^"... Help?

Very nice for your first game jam! Creative take on the theme, looks nice, and gameplay is enjoyable. I think being able to shuffle any time makes it a little bit too easy to do exactly what you want but having the different types of actions combined with the peaceful people works very well!

178.74 high score. This game is pretty great, the sound effects make it really satisfying. My game was cut short when some rioter shot me from offscreen and I couldn't do anything about it, but it was still a really fun experience.

Thanks for the feedback @conrad-etherton. And you are right about the shuffle, I probably should've made a smarter tile spawner.

My bad @rakowu, the shuffle is just to avoid a stale board. The main gameplay involves matching the tiles.

Cool game, I got 410.30 as my final score. I eventually died because an enemy was attacking from off-screen, so I couldn't attack them. Overall, this game was really fun and a nice take on the theme.

This is a pretty goddamn interesting game! At first, I was just blindly matching gems, but then I slowly learnt that you don't want to do that all the time~ The choices you had to make for each color was pretty novel, although the ability to reshuffle the board anytime you want and get a new set of gems sort of made the choice trivial. Still, it's a very neat game with a unique idea, I love it!

This was a lot of fun! I found that the red is the best, and the yellow almost never seemed to work. With a little more balance and polish this could easily be a super cool mobile game.

I tried running your game with Wine on Linux, but sadly no luck. Gonna have to try it out later on Windows.

Innovative combination of mechanics, I really got into the flow of the game after a bit but I was never really sure why I would lose. Blue and Yellow only was my strategy.

Combining a match three game with a management game is a really neat idea. I like how the player has to balance treating innocent protesters fairly with self preservation. Some times I had no choice but to kill all because all I had were red tiles and I was in a tricky spot. Forcing the player make tough choices like that is really smart design. That said, I feel that my success in the game was determined by RNG most of the time. It's frustrating to get several patterns in a row without a row of 3. Despite that, I still had a pretty fun time with the game. The meaningful choices the player is forced to make on top of the game's wonderful visual aesthetic make this a really solid entry. Nice work!

@superpokeunicorn thanks for the great feedback. I agree the game definitely needs more work with the balancing of the actions and a smarter tile spawner.

@gumboot thank you for playing. You lose through hitting too many innocent protesters or getting hit by too many rioters. However it's probably too easy right now.

It took me a while to get it, maybe some tutorials would be nice.
Idea, presentation and graphic and general feel of the game are awesome!

Great entry! The graphics were top notch, and I liked having to match colors while at the same time keeping an eye on what kinds of people were walking around. With the right music and people noises, this game could get really addicting!

Like everyone else has said, I think either you need to have a tutorial stage or a better written guide because I couldn't figure out what each color meant just based on iconography. It seemed like they all caused the robot to shoot and I felt like I didn't have any real control over what would happen when I picked something.

Really interesting and unique game! Took a while to understand the difference between red and blue but if you pay attention it's pretty clear.

It was a bit confusing at first getting into the game but after playing it for a while I got the hang of it, I think. A really fun concept executed well. Though it seemed that later on in the game the enemies got glitched because they attacked from off the screen and it even if you sniped them they would always continue to attack you which made it impossible. Also some music would have been nice.

Other than that though this is a very good game and a very strong entry! Good work!

Hi there! Just notice that in both download pages your zip file is marked as Windows, Linux and Mac compatible but when I've tried to download from both sites there's only a Windows executable inside :(

201.45 whoop! I really liked this game! Took me a while to realize the mechanics, and at first it was a little difficult to both match colors and decide which colors to execute depending on the situation. After I got a hang of this mechanic though, it was really satisfying to see how long I could survive. I really like the simple art style, and the sound design is very effective. Overall, good job!

To my opinion, the idea has good potential. The core loop feels a bit shallow, but I believe there's a space for improvement. Definitely would play the post-jam version. Also, the graphics are smooth and simple. Cheers!

This is a nice idea. You've marked some interesting conflicts in this game, the mechanics is a little too simple though. You could expand this idea with more complex mechanics.

Nice, got 438 points although I am not sure I understood the mechanics fully. It is a nice twist on matching game. The art is great and sounds were nice. I was annoyed by the fact that tiles don't fall down when the ones below it are matched but I got over it.

Really like this game, the gameplay was simple but fun, although I found it odd to use space for accepting menu stuff instead of something like enter. I hope you expand on it further beyond the jam.
I do think that the "humor" and "mood" voting categories don't fit your game though, you should remove them.
