Get Drunk! by alobker

[raw]
made by alobker for LD 40 (COMPO)

You are stuck in a maze. You have 2 minutes to reach the exit in the top right. Don't touch the walls of the maze.

Along the way you will find alcohol. It increases your health, but makes you more drunk. See how long you can keep going.

Note: The maze generation is a little inconsistent. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's hard.

I had a lot of fun with this game. I love the drunken effect! But the music volume at the beginning of the game killed my ears. Good job overall though!

The music changing was a nice touch.

I know the music is annoying. It's the best I could do... :disappointed:

Loved the random level generation! We got to drink number 5 before we started walking into walls and dying, really fun!

Congrats on your game! I got till level 3 with 5 drinks. I liked that the tempo of the music was changing and the camera started wobbling. :)

The audio cues are pretty great. Switching around the arrow keys is a cheap move. ;)

I would say that perhaps the controls could be improved, somehow. I took most of my damage while entirely sober, simply because controlling a character by turning with the arrow keys is generally a real pain. I would guess that there would be a way to have better controls (such as mouse-based controls) without sacrificing the drunk mechanic. Perhaps have the character move towards the mouse pointer when the left button is held down, and simply apply small errors to that? And then, of course, reversing the direction would make the game quite a bit more interesting, because the player would have to position the mouse cursor opposite the direction they wished to go.

I don't know. Just something to think about.

Oh, also: It would possibly be a good idea to use some sort of vector graphics, or at the very least really high resolution bitmap images (something like at least 256x256). The curved / diagonal corners look a little weird, because they're being scaled with anti-aliasing and blurred slightly. They don't actually look too bad in this game, but they could be improved.

Haha, you nailed it on how it feels to be drunk! The music and the moving problems, well done! Also, it fits the theme perfectly!

I would have loved it if the character would have actually looked like a human, and the maze like a bar, but for a Compo it's already looking great!

Keep up the good work! :D

Nice implementation of the drinking idea! The music worked great for the game and it didn't start to feel too repetitive because of the effects. And the effects were great! I loved how it progressed after every drink. Maybe some motion blur would have been a nice add to them :)
It was a really tough game though. Usually I get annoyed by games that require this much patience, but I just had to get another beer. Great job!

This was definitely a neat concept! I felt that the controls were a bit off; I would have preferred to have movement in all four directions with the arrow keys rather than turning, but once you got the hang of it, it wasn't too bad. The different effects as you progressively got more drunk were a really neat touch. Overall, awesome game!

Great game. Thought the audio was really annoying but I love how the controls change as you drink more. Good job.
