Heartless Jump by Nanda

[raw]
made by Nanda for LD 40 (JAM)

Heartless Jump is a Jump & Run. The Twist: Every time you jump you lose a heart (The more jumping = the worse it is). Also for every heart you have, your jump height reduces (The more hearts = the worse it is). This was my first LD (With help from the amazing Marc Putz who made the music). Sadly I only got a few levels done and they don't really use the concept well. Hope you like it anyway :)

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna finish this after the jam, so if you're interested follow me on Instagram: @nanda_gamedev [EDIT]: I most likely wont finish it in anytime soon, just to get that out there :)

Controls: A/D: Run | Space: Jump/Double Jump

Clever concept, especially the reduced jump height, made it much trickier. Music is great.

Well Done!

Wow this was such a great game in terms of level design. It felt really polished. I had a ton of fun.

This is a cool little game! Music is great, graphics are okay and they do everything they need to, and the concept is pretty good too. The level design was obviously very well thought-out, too. I don't have a whole lot of negative things to say about this game. Good job!

You nailed it. I love the way the game teaches you the mechanics in-game and the names of the levels give you clues about how to approach the challenge. You took a lot of lessons from Portal (the good ones). Very polished. The last level was a challenge, but I beat it!

I feel the mechanics don't make much sense. I beat the game, but I spent most of the time in 1st level I believe. Jump power is also life, but lava kills you instantly on contact regardless of the amount of life you have? It also took me a while to figure out I have a double jump. Once I figured it all out, it was great fun.

@kobrar Thank you for the feedback! I really should have made it more apparent that the hearts don't matter if you fall in lava.

Hey Nanda, thanks for you comment on my play of your game, this one: https://youtu.be/BgkQxnrr8sU
Greetings from Austria to Austria. In other words, I could have just shouted "Guad gmocht!" out of the window ;)

Excellent job! Though graphic is simple but it fits it so well. I'm addicted in it! The level design is amazing.

**Overall, I thought that the concept was good!**

Some notes I had:
* Double jumping is a little odd; I was expecting that at the top of my first jump, I would still get the whole second jump, but I get a lot smaller than if I started on the ground. Not sure if this is intentional or not.
* Music loop isn't gapless; it sounds awkward for a couple of seconds.

Overall though, very nice start! Thanks for participating!

Fun game! How the health reduces jump height is a great take on the theme. Wish the levels were more designed around this

Great music!

The idea is really good, and the game is fun too play. The graphics is good, and the music is amazing. But for me the visuals for the player character is a bit weird for the game, but it is okay. Overall a well made LD game. Well done.

Our team does a weekly indie gamedev podcast called Nice Games Club, and we just did a Let's Play episode where we played thirty-six (!!) Ludum Dare 40 games, including yours (which we thought had an excellent core mechanic)!

Decent game, the art was obviously programmer art but it actually worked quite well, reminds me Thomas Was Alone. Sounds were a bit generic. The gameplay was an interesting take on the puzzle/platformer genre.

Sorry, can't let a quality review, don't have enough time, just want to help to get out of danger zone. Overall i think game is good, keep going. Happy Holidays.
