About NOOR:

NOOR is an adventure pixel-art game made in 72 hours for LudumDare42. [THE GAME IS STILL UNDER DEVELOPMENT!] NOOR is born on a strange island. The island is all dark, but he has a special weapon! HE CAN SHOOT LIGHTS! Stay in light and avoid darkness. Also, find a way out of that island. On your way to escape you may confront enemies. use darkness to your advantage and KILL THEM ALL!

HOPE YOU ENJOY IT!

Btw you can now play it on the browser!

[HEY]

-Move with [W] [A] [S] [D]

-Shoot light bulbs using [LEFT MOUSE BUTTON]

-Shoot shadow bulbs using [RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON] (complete the BIG MAN's mission to get the ShadowGun3000.)

-There is an ending when you destroy all the eggs on the island. The NPCs will help you find all of them.

-There is a range for your light bulbs! inside that range, your light bulb should land on your mouse cursor position (HOPEFULLY)

-You can ignore the NPCs if you die a lot!

-You can have only two light bulbs at the same time. when you have shot two, by clicking once more, you destroy the first one you created. (your light bulb availability is shown under your health bar.)

-If you haven't got the ShadowGun3000 yet, you should trigger the eggs and run from them into the darkness. also avoiding them from running near you in your light bulbs.

Great job ! a game very pleasant despite a soft rythm

Really great game! Hard, though, with only 4 hearts I kept dying trying to kill the first 4 eggs. Still, enjoyed the visuals and sound, and gameplay incorporated the theme in an interesting way I haven't seen anyone else do

Sorry couldn't download due to windows defender thinking it's a virus, but from what the pictures show and the previous comment, looks like a great game! Maybe support WebGL that will make people want to play and rate more. Me and my team just released our game and if your played and rated that would be appreciated: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/crumble-1

@sciman101 Thanks :D
Yeah, I can't beat it in the first try either, even if I've played it thousands of times for playtesting. But for the sake of replayability, I preferred the game to stay difficult and removed the check-points and reduced the chance of hearts popped out of enemy corpses.
Btw you can ignore conversations with NPCs in case you're bored with that :D

The best game on LD 42!

I really enjoyed it! I like how almost everything is animated, really gives life to the game. Excellent sound design too! Moving in the game felt a little slow, and the fact that you are going to end up back at the beginning if you lose all the hearts felt a little harsh. But I still think it is a well done game.

There is a lot to like about this; the graphics and sound match well and create a good mood, the mechanic is innovative and really fits the theme. I just didn't really enjoy playing it because it felt so slow. Also, you seem to take damage whenever you get hit by darkness, even if most of you is still covered in light; this felt unfair, mainly because it just slowed the pace down even further. Like I said, I really like the concept and mechanics of the game, I just think it would be more engaging if the pace was faster.

Wow, this is a very well made game. A bit hard in my opinion, but nevertheless a really cool game you made. The concept of shooting light is really cool. Great job!

@fullmontis Thanks :D
The game itself is too short, at first I found it very easy to beat it up in under one minute. and it was a little boring to play. As I didn't have enough time to make it longer, instead I made it harder :D I know it was a bad choice but I'm sure it's more fun than before.
For the moving, I agree... it's a little too slow :D

@kodiqi THANKS :)
For the shadows I really wanted to create the feel of fearing to touch them, so I added that wobbly effect to them. but I haven't noticed what you've mentioned! It's probably a glitch...
I increased the speed of the player and I ended up hitting darkness accidentally in every fight... so I guess it's better to move slow I GUESS :D

The art, the animation and the sound design are all amazing and together they make the mood really great, but it almost seems like you had an idea for a different theme and just went with it anyway. I can see this fitting much better with light is key or even safe in the dark, with some modification.

Aside from that I found myself dying just from being in the dark unintentionally way more often than anything else, and overall the shooting mechanic felt a little unnatural; I had trouble shooting the lights exactly where I wanted them. Because it's so important, it made the whole game feel a little off.

That said, I really liked the NPC's personalities, it is a mechanic I've never seen before and I absolutely have to give it 5/5 in both graphics and audio.

I liked the music! It's unusual for music so simple not to become annoying, and this was great. I found the navigation difficult because I didn't understand how I could aim the light with the mouse. I've never seen the abbreviation LMB before. I also had trouble because I kept shooting lights that were beyond the perimeter of the light I was in. I learned to back up so that the new light would overlap. Should I have been clicking on the junk that I found? I think the instructions said something about the mouse being really important, but I was so overwhelmed with the navigation that I didn't remember. Maybe I'm dumb, but dumb people like games, too.

This has been my favorite so far! It is a bit tedious to move, and I haven't figure out a strategy to get the egg guys without hurting myself in the process, so haven't beat it but love the vibe and will come back to it!

The presentation is just perfect with this one: of graphics, the audio-feedback, the simplistic but really fitting background soundtrack...
The only thing that took some getting used to was that a single click would not reliably shoot a light-bulb. Once I got into a rhythm of pretty much just double-clicking it worked out but it didn't feel as polished and smooth as the rest. I also like the interpretation of the theme, as it's not running out of space because darkness/goo/whatever is encroaching, but rather ever present in a constant amount, that has to be managed by the player.

Wow this is great, very unique approach to the theme, quite polished, well done. Only have to agree with how its quite harsh & difficult.

Very impressive still!

Loved the b&w graphics and art style, very noir -- suited the mood perfectly. Gameplay was nice, though sometimes it was a bit slow to recognise a mouse click.

BTW, McAfee reported there was a virus in the zip file.

@wrenpirate Thank you :)
No dude it was my fault. I should have put more instruction and kind of made them easier to notice... but ran out of time actually.
For the lights, I should say that it's kind of a feature, that you should be careful about where you shoot the lights.

The art is stunning, the dialogs are funny, the take on the theme is great and the mechanic is super original.
But I'm sorry, the game feel is terrible :( The character is sluggish, shooting lights is too slow and don't feel good, the game lacks checkpoints...
There is so much to like in this concept but you really need to refine the overall gameplay experience.
I'd love to see a postjam version with these problems adressed, this universe has so much character!

16. Aug 2018 · 15:39 UTC
@lou-bagel Yeah I agree... I did not think that the navigation would become boring over time.
For the egg guys, you should be taking them with you and running from them in the dark areas, so they get stuck in the darkness you made by removing you last light.

16. Aug 2018 · 15:44 UTC
@radow Thanks :D
For the light bulbs, you can have only two lights at the same time. so when you have two, clicking makes the first one disappear so you have another bulb. so by clicking again, you can have another shot.

No there is no virus in the zip file. It's because the publisher of the application is not trustable or it's unknown for your anti-virus software. Why don't you try it on the browser?

16. Aug 2018 · 15:50 UTC
@pnghasemi ah I see. I understood the "you can only have 2" part, as it was nicely conveyed by the UI, but somehow missed that one disappeared on click when "out of ammo". That explains the need to double-click =)

Noor is definetly one of the best entries I played so far. I loved the dialogues and the sound design especially. The mood feels great in its minimalism! I like the gameplay as well, even if think the absence of checkpoints penalizes it a bit. It probably isn't refined enough to be so repetitive. If the bulbs lighted a bit more or recharged faster, moving through already visited places would be less annoying. Still, it's amazing you did all this on your own! Really good job :D

17. Aug 2018 · 13:19 UTC
Is it called Noor because it's a game about light?
Anyway, the graphics and audio are great, you've got a good atmosphere going on here.
My only issue is that everything is unforgiving, you kinda touch one pixel outside of a light and it is instant damage and, because in addition there's no checkpoint, it's really harsh.
I'd love to play this more if you're going to work on it after the jam.

A beautiful and really well-polished game. Definitely still needs some more tweaking in terms of gameplay as I gave up after about 5 attempts, but that could just be me. It's really impressive that you made all of it, to such a high level, in 3 days.

Great graphics and atmosphere here. Great that you tried out a new mechanic but unfortunately gameplay is a little hard to grasp. Couldn't see how to kill the eggs, and starting all over again and slowly lighting the path again is rather tedious and unfun.

I really like the art style of this game and the soundtrack but it is currently a bit too hard. Maybe you can make a post jam version soon because it's nice but I don't want to get too frustrated to start with zero after dying. :D

And what also was a bit odd was the inconsistency with the interaction. Because you interact with the npcs with E but after that you have to click with the mouse. You should avoid switching between inputs while you do the same thing like interacting with npcs.
Anyway, great game idea and I looking forward to more. :)

I had a frustrating experience with the game. Collision detection is much accurate and not having how to recover hearts makes this game too hard. The core mechanic is interesting, and I'll try to finish it in a later version (too many LD42 games to play to stay just in one). What you've done visually and with the music and sound effects is impressive, all of them set a great atmosphere to the game. As a suggestion, apart from allowing the player to recover health easier, I don't see the necessity of having a double-click action required to shot the lights, and I agree with @norrimo about the [E] key. I'll play it for sure if you continue working on and improving your game.

You already played our game: The legend of the looter and the incredible backpack that never runs out of space, so we can't do anything but thank you. 」( ̄▽ ̄」)

A bit punitive when you get to loose all your lifes but that's alright, it's short and it is fun in its genre. Well done.

A polished entry indeed. Loved the art on this, the text is well-written, and you nailed a dark cartoony mood that I'm a big fan of. The way you aim and shoot the light was tough to get a grasp on and I kept shooting off my first two shots after madly clicking to hatch (after dying 5+ times). It's also a little hard to tell when you're being damaged and where the hitbox is exactly.

Man, as much as I'm interested in the game, this is too difficult for me. I couldn't really understand how I could damage the eggs without damaging myself, or where I could find the gas I was supposed to collect.

A very interesting entry nonetheless. :smile:

This game is a very good interpretation of the theme! I loved the atmosphere of this little exploration game with its minimalist graphic style and the sound design just excellent! However, I find that the game is a little difficult for new players who start. I think a more progressive difficulty curve would make the game even better! Great job! :)
